For a while, the Dodgers played under the name Brooklyn Robins. And the Yankees were originally the Baltimore Orioles. Which begs the question - why is it when they’re named after birds do MLB teams always choose the most docile ones? In other sports, you get Hawks, Falcons, Eagles, Seahawks - birds of prey. But in MLB, you get Cardinals, Blue Jays, Orioles, and at one point, Robins. Plenty of other MLB teams have monikers based on predators and other creatures that can strike fear - Tigers, Diamondbacks, Marlins, and Cubs (once they grow up, which apparently takes 108 years). But with birds, just some routine garden avians one sets out bird feeders for. I’m surprised the Guardians didn’t choose “Wrens” or “Parakeets” instead of their new statue-themed moniker. (Apparently the NHL does this, too, as the only bird named teams are the Ducks and Penguins. The Blackhawks are named for an indigenous tribe and therefore don’t count.)

Agreed. This isn’t like Mookie, who had one year left, made $27mill, and couldn’t come to an agreement on his extension…

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part I

Why are we assuming what he knows? Or whether or not he thinks he is above the law here? Or knows the law at all? He should be familiar with MLB rules regarding gambling; every clubhouse in MLB has signs warning players of the consequences. But others have ignored those signs before him. Just last year, Pirates shortstop Tupucita Marcano was banned from MLB for gambling… -
And hyperbole is exaggerating information to make a point, like calling Arozarena an “eighth outfielder”. Certainly no team dedicates 30% of their roster to outfielders, very few (if any) teams have seven outfielders better than Arozarena. But the point was obvious - outfield isn’t a big need in Boston, and certainly not one they would clear Casas to fill. I consider the Casas/Arozarena trade to be ill-timed. Last week, before Casas value was adjusted, it would have worked. But saying Seattle would only trade for Yoshida “if they got something of value” could be classified as speculation and/or disinformation. None of us has access to their internal evaluations or knows how they feel about Yoshida and Garver…

Banks notify customers, too. I get texts from my bank on transactions they question. Why they think someone stole my information to pay my gas bill does confuse me, but I still like the security… -

Or .. what also makes sense is Ohtani verified the transactions himself because he made them and his translator had no access to anything besides the gobs of cash he was handed to go place the bets. I mean, how many people give their translators free rein over their bank accounts? -
Without disinformation, all we’d have is speculation, confirmation bias, and hyperbole. Disinformation is the closest thing we have to information!!

It’s nutty because he is reportedly so important to that franchise, yet his take home pay is so little that he’s resorted to betting on baseball just to make ends meet… -
Casas is disappointing? Sure he hasn’t won an MVP yet, but it might be premature to lump him in with Dustin Ackley already. Actually BTV recently dropped Casas down from 27.9 to 18.7, which means they’re updating players. Raleigh’s value could go down as well if he hasn’t already been updated…

If the Sox had interest in Arozarena, I’d expect the trade to include someone more like Winckowski than Casas…

Per BTV, Casas’ equivalent is Cal Raleigh. I would make that swap…

His proposal was Arozarena for Casas and Yoshida with no money involved (which he comically thinks Seattle would be the team to walk away from). It’s one of those “but it works for my team” trades that makes no sense for Boston as it creates voids at 1b and DH while overfilling their OF. And creates excessive bench spending in Seattle. I don’t think either side would like that trade. Now if Seattle actually likes Yoshida (unknown) they might deal Garver for him if the money makes sense..

The difference seems to be only one of them requires unreasonable trade requests involving trading a league average left fielder for a minimum wage 1b with all star potential in order to climb back into relevance…

After all the money changes hands, the Mariners would get Yoshida for $9mill per year. That’s only slightly more than Isiah Kiner-Falefa money. That alone makes Yoshida an important piece. Or they could roll out Garver and the same lineup that missed the postseason in 2024…

Do they need to be there in April? Over the course of a season, players will get hurt, released, demoted, benched, traded, etc. When was the last time a team went 162 games without calling someone up? The opportunities will be there. No need to force them, and certainly no need to rely on them from day one…

I hope the Sox prioritize defense at the catching position, and don’t focus on their opportunity to get a RHH in the lineup. If they get a catcher that can hit from the right side, he better also be a really good catcher. And if the new catcher can’t hit, someone has to bat ninth anyway… -

It’s a perfect solution for the Mariners!! Trade away your $12mill starting left fielder so you can better afford a $13mill backup catcher!!

This is why I try Garver. If he fails, he doesn’t have to stay all year. And then the guys with options like Valdez can be a plan. Or one of the untried prospects. If Yoshida flounders, he’s back in 2026, and likely 2027 and 2028 as well. If the goal is to unload Yoshida, I think this is the most risk-averse plan…

If an armed brigade of aliens came to Earth and challenged the Yankees to best of seven series with the human race at stake, meaning if Yankees won, the aliens go home dejected. But if the aliens won, they would destroy our cities, pillage our resources, torture and enslave all survivors, and have their way with our women, I would still struggle to root for the Yankees…

Maybe because they committed $700mill to an elite DH largely due to his two-way abilities despite his having had TJ twice already? His debut in LA was historic, but a $700mill DH is the reason luxury taxes exist. How many seasons before his third and final TJ ends his pitching career once and for all? I’ll set the over under at 3.5. And then I’ll take the under…
