  1. Or Story at 3b. Assuming Bregman walks away from $80mill over 2 years (which I think is very unlikely)…
  2. These bats have been around for a few years but no one ever really made much of it until the Yankees brutalized Milwaukee pitching for 3 games. I was watching some random game this weekend and the commentators were talking about them, and one guy said “every hitter has a different sweet spot.” This is pure nonsense. The sweet spot on a bat is the center of mass of the bat, and it doesn’t move around based on the hitter. If a batter hits the ball at the center of mass, then the kinetic energy transferred to the ball is at a maximum. The entire point of the torpedo bat is to move the center of mass further away from the hitter, if only slightly while staying within the rules. In this respect, it attempts to inch closer to being a fungo bat while still being usable in games. The fungo is the epitome of what happens when you move the center of mass furthest from the hitter - lots of flyballs by design. Moving the center of mass is why torpedo bats are smarter and corking bats (which does the opposite) is stupider…
  3. Houck has made one start. No one cares about spring training numbers.
  4. He was so shocked they were able to take that photograph days in advance!!
  5. Never understood that tradition. Why not just play Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and leave Thursday open? (Unless it’s for ticket holders who want to see the guest game of the season.)
  6. Even a mediocre deal would have been fine. In 2022, the Sox were one season removed from an ALCS appearance. And to repeat that flop in 2023 was unforgivable. St. Louis is a young, rebuilding team. He’ll do well for them Theres for a while. But once they start winning, we will have to see if it’s a different story…
  7. I liked the idea Bloom was supposed to implement, but I think his firing was merited after two consecutive failed deadlines when his attempts to bolster teams that were within striking distance of a wild card slot. He lacked the killer instinct to pull off a big deal, simply put. He did it with well in 2021 with Schwarber and two mediocre relievers who at least gave his bullpen some innings. But he gave up nothing in those deals and was unable to pull anything off if he had to actuypay a reasonable price. Bloom strikes me as a useful CBO for a team in need of a farm system and a rebuild, but not one who can put a competitive one over the top…
  8. Then the Sox need to bench/rest/cure him. If he’s hurt, it’s clearly affecting his play to the point where any healthy ball player would be a step up. If he’s not hurt, which he insists, then I am wondering about the story behind the new, wide open stance. It seems like it would be more taxing on his shoulder. So is he just trying to be pull-happy? If some non-ball player like me tried to bat like that, it’d take me some time to learn to wait a little longer and not be way out in front of everything. I assume a hitter with Devers’ pedigree could adjust much faster. But maybe not?
  9. Whats crazy is Anthony Rendon makes more per year than Betts - and Rendon signed FIVE MONTHS EARLIER!!
  10. Old friend Martin Perez now of the White Sox, is no hitting the Twins through six. White Sox SP in general should be the early story of 2025. 0.00 ERA through their first 23 IP…
  11. The Dodgers have no homegrown starting pitchers. 3 Japanese imports and two former Rays.
  12. Papelbon wants pigs to hit home runs?
  13. Pouting all spring training? Methinks the media hype might be a tad overblown…
  14. It’s one thing to worry about whether or not a player is still injured. But you’re rapidly approaching equating the body’s internal healing process to a conspiracy theory…
  15. Also possible it’s to compensate for how he’s being pitched. That sounds like compensation for inside pitches more so than for shoulder discomfort. That doesn’t mean his new stance is not a possible cause of his issues. Of course whether or not you buy the DH thing doesn’t eliminate that possibility either. But I think getting lost here in Devers’ struggles is that Casas and Story are a combined 2 for 24 with 9 strikeouts, Wong and Rafaela are hitless so far, and only Wilyer Abreu has more than 3 hits through three games. While Devers is the biggest concern, he’s far from alone. And facing Jake deGrom today is possibly not a good remedy…
  16. But we don’t even know if he is having shoulder issues this year, let alone career-threatening ones. This is what happens when you try to medically diagnose a player from his baseball stats. Yes his K’s are concerning and high for even players who make contact about as often as NASA, but it’s also 3 days for a guy adjusting to a new role. Some players don’t like DHing because, as Jim Rice (I think) once said “it’s like pinch hitting 4 times in a game.” If Devers’ shoulders are still sore, Cora shouldn’t play him and maybe he needs IL time. And the irony there is if Devers does hit the shelf, all the people screaming to unload Yoshida at any cost might finally stop their chanting and realize why not doing so was a good thing. But if Devers can’t get into pinch hitting 4 times in a game, maybe it just takes him a bit to adjust…
  17. Can Devers get at least 15 plate appearances before we declare his career over? Or even diagnose him with shoulder problems? If he is having shoulder issues from last year, wouldn’t Cora - someone who not only watches every game but can also talk to Devers - have more of a clue about it than any of us? While it’s possible Devers is having physical issues, it’s also possible he’s just not adjusting as well to being a full time DH. Or it could be any other number of reasons. But since it’s not even diagnosed as a shoulder issue, calling it a “career-threatening shoulder issue” right now is a whole new level of premature…
  18. Yeah Devers and Casas are clearly AAAA players. Just like Jose Ramirez, Mike Trout, Luis Arraez, and Francisco Lindor. How do these clearly unqualified players even make MLB?
  19. But Anthony is 0 for 3 already. He needs to go back to AA, obviously…
  20. Will his dominance continue? Hmmmmm ….. No. Maybe he can pitch well enough to replace Justin Wilson in the bullpen…
  21. I’m not sure Mayer and Anthony are ahead of Yoshida. The Sox don’t have to DFA anyone to call up Yoshida. And like it or not, that really is a big deal for most teams, especially since the season has started…
  22. .800 vs LHP? That’s quite the bold prediction given he’s at .524 right now, and want much better in the minors. I agree that .900 vs RHP is doable for Abreu. It’s not even a bold prediction, since his career number is .870…
  23. Calling up Mayer to play 3b would be short-sighted. Then who takes over shortstop WHEN (not if) Story goes down?
  24. Cora says lots of stuff. It was proposed earlier that if Bregman went down, Devers would return to 3b. Did Cora address that?
