  1. I have Wilson on my list of “Players Most Likely To Be Released Before August is Over”. Does that count for anything?
  2. Teiscar might want to hear what the Mets say about this if they don’t land Soto. And possibly even if they do…
  3. The second half of that bullpen’s season can’t be unrelated to their decision to never replace their injured starters. Before April was out, two SPs went down and the closest thing to a fifth starter was Criswell, and he didn’t take regular turns in the rotation. Not to mention, Cora clearly didn’t trust him to go deep into games. The Sox need five actual starters, and need to replace anyone who goes down in ST, especially if MLB arms not named Chase Anderson are available…
  4. That’s not really free agent closer money anymore. I think Hendriks gets first crack at the ninth and that decision was made a year ago. Chapman was signed for $11mill probably means Tanner Scott is looking for $14-15mill for multiple years…
  5. Better case to be made that the Cubs change his position before that contract expires. Swanson can field, but his arm is among the weakest of all MLB shortstops. Best range, weak arm. If the Cubs didn’t have a defensive magician lined up to play CF for the next 5 years, Swanson might be a candidate to move even sooner…
  6. I don’t hate it now, as his defense is better than I realized. But at the time Story was my least favorite option of all the FA shortstops, and without Coors I referred to him as an “overpaid Paul DeJong.” But really he’s better than I anticipated. That said, Bogaerts was always kind of a question mark defensively at SS, something San Diego realized one year into an 11 year contract. Signing Story served two purposes for Boston. 1. A pre-emotive strike at replacing Bogaerts before he left, and 2. A display to the fans that the Sox were not going to be Tamoa North…
  7. Was the JD Martínez signing really any different than Story? JD signed very late (Feb 26) and was never really connected to any other teams. Boston had a clear need and Martínez was a Dombrowski favorite, and that meant JD was immediately linked to Boston right away, but other than incumbent Arizona (where JD achieved Legend Status in a mere half-season) there were no other rumors. The negotiations were probably dragged out because Boras was reportedly asking for $300mill and had written some sort of treatise about the “King Kong of Slug,” but that was all just posturing in the end. There was no bidding war, and Martínez ultimately settled for well under half the reported asking price. Really we haven’t seen Boston aggressively outbid anyone for a big contract since David Price…
  8. In football, there’s a strong argument for QB rating…
  9. I was more into Tanner Scott as part of the solution myself. And I get not liking Chapman as a human being. He’s one of my frequently used Second Chance examples that I never understood. But right now, as far as we know, this guy is replacing Cam Booser or Brennan Bernardino. And if he does get used in high leverage situations - which both Booser and Bernardino were - he’s not the worst option pitching wise. And if we look at him solely from a baseball perspective, he’s a better upgrade than Justin Wilson…
  10. Fulmer. He was not added to the 40 man roster and therefore as of today is not even eligible to be in the Sox bullpen…
  11. Or if they can get a corner infielder…
  12. MLBTR has at least always cited their sources and the overwhelming majority of their audience knows how to use Google…
  13. All things equal (except taxes), don’t count out the legacy implications of being a Met. In Boston, he gets lumped in with a bunch of Hall of Fame caliber left fielders, including Williams, Yaz, Rice and Manny. But who’s the best Mets hitter ever? (Hint: it might be Soto if he signs there.)
  14. We could do worse from a PR standpoint. Imagine the outcry if we have a Cora-Bregman reunion…
  15. On that last statement 1. I assume the author of the quote either forgot Trevor Bauer is a free agent or else he just gives Chapman a higher POS Rating. 2. Next off-season, we could have Chapman, Bauer and Marcell Ozuna all on the market all at once. I eagerly await the rankings.
  16. BTV gives him a surplus value of $14.4mill, which places him between Braden Montgomery and David Hamilton. Given the Sox have already filled 2b in Pitt, I’d think the Pirates would be more interested in Montgomery. I’m hesitant, despite Ortiz posting 3.0 bWAR in only 135 innings last year…
  17. It’s not official until MLBTR reports it. That said https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/12/red-sox-progressing-in-talks-with-aroldis-chapman.html
  18. Except that he’s only 25 years old and doesn’t even turn 26 until late June. Can’t say that about Fried or Burnes…
  19. He’s three grades below “Alabama UFO Spotter” on the Reliability Scale…
  20. Then he’ll just buy the entirety of planet Earth and all his credits and debits should cancel each other out…
  21. I plugged it into BTV and it said “Are you f’n serious?” In order for that trade to work on, Fangraphs would have to change the value of 1 fWAR from $8mill to about $20mill, but only for Castillo and not Mayer. Castillo at the current fWAR value has a surplus of -$6.1mill, and it appears to be a decent value. Mayer has a surplus of $53.5mill. If Mayer is going to Seattle, it would make more sense to deal him for Woo or Bryce Miller than for Castillo. A deal of David Hamilton for Castillo plus $15mill makes more sense on their model. But I am not so sure Seattle is interested. Why even bother with Castillo? If the Sox actually get involved with one free agent SP, they have a rotation for now. Is the goal to use Castillo (1.8 bWAR) to bump Crawford (2.0 bWAR) out of the rotation? Is Castillo an upgrade for any of the 4 current starters?
