    It makes some sense and it might go up or down. But $11.4 mill over 5 years isn’t exactly a stellar surplus value. Abreu, for example, has a surplus value of $29.8mill over 5 years. Castillo’s is lower but, no matter how he performs, he’s owed $72mill over the next 3 years. His surplus value indicates he should be worth roughly 8 fWAR in that time, which is more than Hamilton. But also for much, much more money. And he also might not reach it…

    Bullshiit Steamer projections aside, Hamilton was actually worth 1.7 fWAR in 98 games, which extrapolates out to 2.3 fWAR in 136 games. He’s not a step down from Moore. At worst, he’s an equal, and as he’s 5 years younger, is more likely to improve. Moore’s Gold Glove was undeserved. Ceddanne Rafaela played multiple roles and fared better on the defensive metrics. That said, and despite Hamilton’s significantly greater surplus value than Castillo’s, I’d be surprised if even Dipoto entertained that offer, as my guess is the primary reason Castillo is potentially available is because he’s marketed as a “low cost” starting solution…

    I suppose if he has a 4 fWAR season, he might try for a deal longer than his remaining two years, even if the AAV isn’t as good. Those years might not be as available if he waits out his deal. I guess it depends what he values more - years or money. And whether or not he can actually put up a 4 fWAR season…

    Hamilton was a pleasant surprise last year, but I’d deal him for a lesser SP than Castillo…

    Murphy is owed $60mill over the next 4 years with an option for a fifth. As Atlanta watched Travis d’Arnaud depart via free agency, I’m not sure who else they have. There is a 24yo in AAA named Drake Baldwin who appears to have some outstanding plate discipline and some pop. Not sure how he is on the other side of the ball, however.

    Vazquez does more for his staff than Ryan Jeffers does. Or Yasmani Grandal. Vazquez is good (not great) defensive catcher who is a huge defensive upgrade over Wong. I’d rather see the Sox trade nothing for his last year than try to bring in pretty much any of the remaining free agents.

    If the Sox had signed the non-tendered Romano (and his ERA over 7), Breslow would be accused of dumpster diving. Especially if Dombrowski had gone out and spent millions on Aroldis Chapman to help his bullpen. Thats called irony…

    Christian Vazquez. StatCast still gives him good grades for pitch framing. One year left at $10mill. If the Twins want to shave some salary, Vazquez plus $3mill for RHP Zack Kelly (or some other nondescript 40 man arm) makes some sense for both teams. Kelly isn’t awful or anything and he could handle some useful innings for the Twins. But he also won’t be hard to replace in Boston…

    Walker is a good player who does help the defense, although I prefer upgrading third over first. But I’d be happy with either one. But whether the Sox go for Walker or Bregman or Alonso or Arenado, it does create the logjam that necessitates another move, most likely involving either Casas or Yoshida. And coming off surgery with his contract, Yoshida is a much tougher move…

    Kittredge is fine if you limit him to a one year deal. The guy has had so many arm arm issues in recent years, he’s going to have to learn how to throw left-handed soon if he wants to keep pitching…

    I think you undervalue Robert based on his one bad season. But there is a good chance that the White Sox expect to receive compensation for the 5 bWAR player from 2023 and not something more representative of his services. Sure Scott was lesser a few years back, but signing a reliever for 4 years is a lot less risky than signing a starter for 6 or 7 or 10 or whatever they’re expecting these days. Especially the starters the Sox sign. Who was their last free agent SP that required a significant commitment and didn’t crap out almost immediately?

    Bregman doesn’t turn 32 until March, 2026. But, yes, he is a short term solution that will require a long term contract. I do think upgrading 3b and moving Devers is a good plan, and Bregman is one of the better fits of the readily available players, but right now he feels more like a “see, we will spend!!” type of signing. I’d much prefer Isaac Paredes, whose defense can be up and down on the metrics, but whose dead pull right-handed swing was made for Fenway. But the Sox just do not match up with the Cubs for a trade, despite Paredes being somewhat unpopular with their fans…
