What is it in Mayer’s past performance that lead to this conclusion? The scouting reports on Soxprospects says “Instinctual defender with fluid actions. Looks like he is gliding on the field. Soft hands and solid footwork. Moves well and has plenty of range for shortstop. Confident defender; will take a flashy infield.” Hardly the same level of criticism…

Calling up the kids isn’t going to fix the bullpen. (Well, maybe Guerrero.) But have we really reached the point where every stumble is an excuse to call up Anthony and/or Mayer? It is possible moving Tanner Houck to the bullpen could help. Houck is having a bizarre season in the rotation. In 43.2 IP, he has been charged with 38 ER. In 43 of those IP, he’s given up 21 ER. And in the other 0.2 IP, he’s been charged with 18 ER. He’s not shown he can be trusted as a starter. Hopefully a move to the bullpen can produce a turnaround similar to what St. Louis is getting out of Steve Matz. That does leave a gaping hole in the rotation. With Crochet, Giolito, Dobbins and Bello in place, there’s no real option for a fifth. Criswell? Newcomb? Most likely someone like that until one of Buehler, Crawford or Fitts returns. (Although I think Fitts should go to the bullpen, too.) -
Is Hendriks hurt or something? Why bring Weissert back out?

Huh? In 1985, the lottery wasn’t weighted (which I just learned). That means ALL SEVEN TEAMS IN IT HAD A 14.29% CHANCE. Yet somehow you’re now trying to argue that the Knicks 14% chance was worse than that of Seattle or Golden State or the other four teams. This is not beating the odds; this is fourth grade math. This draft was the first lottery and therefore has its share of conspiracy theories. But they all just ignore that the Knicks chance was as good as anyone else’s. Also with four future Hall of Famers in the first round, the Knicks (and other teams, notably Utah) had a good chance and revitalizing their franchises…

Cora seems to ignore who he can trust. Bernardino, Weissert, Hendriks and Wilson have given him a combined 20 innings without an earned run in the last two weeks. So who is in facing the white hot Javy Baez with men on base?

I think it’s more like we’re seeing why the Yankees left him unprotected. His arm is fragile, and multiple surgeries have extended his career, but apparently didn’t improve it…

Houck went from 1.3 bWAR in his first full year as a starter to 3.5 bWAR in his second. Casas keeps getting hurt and really has only one full season under his belt. Can’t blame Cora for that. Hamilton absolutely showed massive steps forward last year. This year he’s rarely playing. Wing is never going to be an All Star, bet he is absolutely better than he was when they acquired him…

I don’t think anyone said Devers would be a GOOD first baseman, just that he could move there. First all, he’d be replacing Casas, so the bar is pretty low. Second, getting Yoshida into the lineup and Toro -who’s also not a good 1b - out has to be a good thing…;

I don’t think counting on 3 rookies to all live up to the hype simultaneously is a good plan. Anthony can step in and replace Rafaela, who, according to a few articles on MSN, is a source of frustration with Cora due to his lack of plate discipline. I think these articles do intentionally overstate the level of frustration. Either way, it’s not a bad move. Mayer can and should wait for Story’s inevitable injury. Outting Campbell at first over the inexperienced Toro strikes me as re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. In this case, Campbell might be better but also brings even less experience to the situation. Let him play second, and get comfortable there…

I’m not a fan of this guy but I’ve mentioned him multiple times - Andrew Vaughn. Hes managed to play 1b all through college, the minors and MLB despite being 5’3”. His StatCast page is actually decent. His defense is lackluster but at least experienced. And Chicago is clearly going nowhere and already called up their AAA masher 1b in Tim Elko. They’d deal Vaughn today because the market in July will be dead for him. BTV gives him a surplus value of -$4.7mill. He’s no Freddie Freeman, but at least he’s no Abraham Toro. And the cost won’t be Anthony or Mayer…
