  1. What makes people think Zack Wheeler will be so cheap? Think that the Mets held on to this guy through injury-plagued and missed seasons just to guarantee being able to trade him for a pile of dirt?
  2. James Shields?
  3. Whether you find it acceptable or not, it happens. The Giants did it last year. And the Mets might only be saved from doing it this year because the Marlins traded away all their major leaguers...
  4. #8 at what? I think I missed that part of the discussion. Bob Gibson’s 1968 seems to be universally accepted as one of the greatest seasons ever for a pitcher. But Luis Tiant’s 1968 season is never mentioned, despite being only marginally less dominant than Gibson’s...
  5. The thing is, it does look like a lot of the “poorly” run big market approach looks like an inevitable fallout from that method. And if the goal was to avoid that fallout, there light be an upfront price of a bad season or two. The issue for fans is, many don’t like new ideas. “When you run a big market team, you spend money! When those players stop performing - which is totally the fault of the GM for signing the wrong guy - you spend money and trade bad player!! Losing is not acceptable!!” And for a guy to come in and say “I think wa can be like the 1990’s Atlanta Braves, who didn’t spend a lot but we’re insanely successful,” fans then cry “No!! Not what a large market team does !! Spend money and take your blame when it fails!!”
  6. Well, acquiring pitching in general. Drafting is one way to get it. In fact, drafting is the slowest and least productive method, since many pitchers can get injured or simply not get much better through the minor leagues. The attrition rates are very high. That's why Baseball Prospectus gives preference to position players when ranking prospects. But Ben also acquired Eduardo Rodriguez. So he got some pitching for the Sox...
  7. A good summary. And while Pablo and Hanley were bad cotnracts, even the best GMs make bad signings. Epstein certainly had his share of free agent clunkers in Boston, and even a few in Chicago. But that is more the nature of paying heavily for post-prime talent, which is the essence of free agency. Sometimes I think people focus on the dud post-prime, overpriced, unproductive free agent that a GM acquires as a problem because he is a hindrance to acquiring another dud post-prime, overpriced, unproductive free agent. This is like getting upset with someone for taking arsenic because you really wanted them to take your cyanide...
  8. Yeah maybe I got too colorful. Basically the strategy he was proposing for running a large market team still has the same flaws, as we have seen with a few other teams. Detroit acquired talent the same way with the same guy in charge, and what happened is obvious. But even other teams have fallen into that same trap of winding up with a roster of overpriced talent, making keeping their younger players difficult beyond arbitration.
  9. Well, one Cy Young winner.
  10. Well, he did give us Benintendi...
  11. I said I am not arguing economics with an accountant...
  12. So it's settled. The Sox need to trade for Sandy Koufax. Hey, can his arm be in worse shape than any of the other relievers DD has acquired?
  13. You only commented on the set up? There was a punchline in that post!!!
  14. And that is why you never see a picture of Franklin in a pink hat..
  15. And Lee J Cobb was an underappreciated movie villain...
  16. I'm sure Sox management is disgusted with him allowing 1 ER this month and that awful 35-6 record in games he has appeared. Also, why would the Sox call up a pitcher just to DFA him? Wouldn't they have to DFA someone else just to get him on the 40-man roster? Chandler Shepherd might get the call, but the most likely scenario is they simply activate Wright on Sunday...
  17. Well, to be fair, i happens every day on this board. I think Ben Franklin said it best. "There are only 3 certainties in life - death, taxes, and Red Sox fans wanting Jackie Bradley traded because his offense is simply not consistent enough for them."
  18. It was only 2 innings. I don’t blame a manager if he leaves in a pitcher with a track record in to try and pitch himself out of a funk...
  19. And yet, according to Tomase, Lackey was one of the most popular guys on the team and a wonderful human being...
  20. And I assume you will continue to sing those same large market praises if, in a few seasons, the Red Sox turn into what the Tigers are now...
  21. Yet somehow he’s sharp as a tack. A couple years ago he posted on BDC that Mookie/Moolie was the best leadoff hitter he’d seen since Rickey Henderson. Naturally I questioned this, citing some of the Cooperstown leadoff guys like Molitor, Raines, Boggs, Larkin, etc. Nope. Best since Henderson. And now, a couple years later, I’m not so sure he was wrong...
  22. Bosoxmal is a nonagenarian WW II vet. As such his eyes don’t help in preventing the occasional typo. Me? I have no good excuse for mine...
  23. Benintendi has been credited with 3.6 fWAR this year, tied for tenth in MLB with Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, and Manny Machado. And ahead of JD Martinez (3.5)...
  24. Theo was also an outstanding drafter capable of providing sufficient minimum wage talent to offset his overpriced players. Not every GM is. Dombrowski certainly wasn’t in Detroit...
  25. You changed this proposal to one I would, if I was GM of the Rockies, reject without a counteroffer. Chatham might not be the highest ceiling prospect, but at least he has potential. Lin is the type of player every team already has in their system. Essentially this trade boils down to LeMahieu for Sharwyn. Were I calling the shots for Colorado, I look elsewhere and likely succeed in getting a better offer..,
