  1. Well, he did give us Benintendi...
  2. I said I am not arguing economics with an accountant...
  3. So it's settled. The Sox need to trade for Sandy Koufax. Hey, can his arm be in worse shape than any of the other relievers DD has acquired?
  4. You only commented on the set up? There was a punchline in that post!!!
  5. And that is why you never see a picture of Franklin in a pink hat..
  6. And Lee J Cobb was an underappreciated movie villain...
  7. I'm sure Sox management is disgusted with him allowing 1 ER this month and that awful 35-6 record in games he has appeared. Also, why would the Sox call up a pitcher just to DFA him? Wouldn't they have to DFA someone else just to get him on the 40-man roster? Chandler Shepherd might get the call, but the most likely scenario is they simply activate Wright on Sunday...
  8. Well, to be fair, i happens every day on this board. I think Ben Franklin said it best. "There are only 3 certainties in life - death, taxes, and Red Sox fans wanting Jackie Bradley traded because his offense is simply not consistent enough for them."
  9. It was only 2 innings. I don’t blame a manager if he leaves in a pitcher with a track record in to try and pitch himself out of a funk...
  10. And yet, according to Tomase, Lackey was one of the most popular guys on the team and a wonderful human being...
  11. And I assume you will continue to sing those same large market praises if, in a few seasons, the Red Sox turn into what the Tigers are now...
  12. Yet somehow he’s sharp as a tack. A couple years ago he posted on BDC that Mookie/Moolie was the best leadoff hitter he’d seen since Rickey Henderson. Naturally I questioned this, citing some of the Cooperstown leadoff guys like Molitor, Raines, Boggs, Larkin, etc. Nope. Best since Henderson. And now, a couple years later, I’m not so sure he was wrong...
  13. Bosoxmal is a nonagenarian WW II vet. As such his eyes don’t help in preventing the occasional typo. Me? I have no good excuse for mine...
  14. Benintendi has been credited with 3.6 fWAR this year, tied for tenth in MLB with Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, and Manny Machado. And ahead of JD Martinez (3.5)...
  15. Theo was also an outstanding drafter capable of providing sufficient minimum wage talent to offset his overpriced players. Not every GM is. Dombrowski certainly wasn’t in Detroit...
  16. You changed this proposal to one I would, if I was GM of the Rockies, reject without a counteroffer. Chatham might not be the highest ceiling prospect, but at least he has potential. Lin is the type of player every team already has in their system. Essentially this trade boils down to LeMahieu for Sharwyn. Were I calling the shots for Colorado, I look elsewhere and likely succeed in getting a better offer..,
  17. When it comes to 6 or 7 year deals, it absolute is optional. Or at least mitigable. The plan of “doing everything” to win now can and often does have long term negative effects. As fans we have the luxury of saying “who cares? Deal with the future when it gets here.” But a GM had better not have that same attitude. Let’s play the hypothetical but also realistic game where Cherington’s long term plan starts working. He deals prospects to fill gaps, and the Sox remain competitive for several more years. But the upfront price was 2014 and 2015 as they happened. The alternate reality is Dombrowski runs the team exactly as he has and has the same successes. But come, say, 2020 and 2021, the farm has run dry and the heavy contracts are too burdensome. He cannot afford to and fails to keep his young core and has no one to replace them. In these two seasons, the Sox are not competitive and out of the race before the ASB. Which scenario do you prefer?
  18. It's an optional part of doing business. There are plenty of teams that minimize their involvement and still have stretches of success...
  19. The Sox would need to go at best 20-47 the rest of the way to achieve MADSTORK's prediction of maxing out at 86 wins....
  20. The most shocking aspect is that on July 12, the Sox have yet to lose 30 games. The last 2 teams won the division, losing their 30th game on June 17th (2017) and June 20th (2016)...
  21. Hershiser in 1988 was about as dominant an anyone, especially given his opponent was the Bash Brothers..
  22. Walks get factored into just about every offensive stat except batting average and slugging percentage. This includes OBP, OBA, wOBA, OPS, Runs Created and WAR...
  23. And not using the present value thing, Scherzer's deal was for $210mill, which was the number that caused a lot of market noise. While Washington probably saved some value by deferring money (Fangraphs estimated it was closer to $131mill than $195mill), the future of that market was not as known, either. But I'm not going to argue economics with an accountant. Washington probably did well with their financing. The real issue was the $30mill AAV they placed on starting pitching, which was a previously unbroken barrier...
  24. If I was GM of the Rockies, I might accept that deal, despite it's inclusion of Travis, who would not interest me. But Sharwyn and Chatham would. I might insist on a less MLB-ready, but higher upside A-baler in place of Travis. But it wouldn't be a deal-breaker. Of course, it is also fairly easily topped by another team looking for a 2B. Now would this same package get Dozier? Would it be worth asking? Or do you think LeMahieu, who has Coors-inflated numbers, but is a physical beast among 2Bmen, is the smarter option?
  25. Scherzer still has 3 years left, for which he will be paid $126mill, including the deferred money. Lester has two years left, for which he will be $57mill. And arguably his 2017 season wasn't worth the $27mill salary. His 2017 was very similar to what the Sox are getting from Price now...
