If durability is so important to the point where a minor league deal is a bad idea, please explain to me again why fans are obsessed with guaranteeing $60mill for a pitcher who has had TJ surgery twice and threw only 111 IP last year and only 235 IP in the last 3 years? I’m not saying the Sox shouldn’t sign Eovaldi. I’m saying if you think durability is the real reason not to give Buchholz a minor league deal, then you’re a hypocrite if you also advocate signing Eovaldi...

I hope it’s Swihart. But some teams might prefer Vazquez. Btw, any deal for an MLB pitcher puts Johnson’s roster spot at risk. Might as well include him too...

So by your calculations, it looks like bringing back Pearce might have prevented the return of Kelly/replacement set up guy. This does assume the team is limited by luxury tax thresholds. By even simpler math, it means goodbye to Blake Swihart (or another catcher)...

1) His numbers probably won’t be as good in the AL, they were in Chris Sale territory. But that is not the same as saying they will be bad. 2) Speculation. Plus the goal is for depth. 3) The pitchers you name aren’t 20-somethings on the rise . Might as well give Buchhioz the opportunity to develop. Wright was born the same month as Buchholz. (Buchholz is 16 days older than Wright.) But being real about it, there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone. Last year, the Sox has 7 pitchers who made double digit starts and 9 pitchers who started 4 or more games. And that was an uncharacteristically healthy year. 4) Suggesting a minor league deal. Keep up. No one is suggesting signing him for $13mill. 5)Point? Actually it is entirely possible that Kelly might be off the table with the signing of Steve Pearce. Unless Henry unleashes the payroll beyond all luxury tax tiers...

For the record, Buchholz did not make $13.5mill last year. He did make that much in 2017 in Philadelphia as part of the final option year of his contract originally signed in Boston. But last year he joined Arizona on a minor league deal. And as he was injured, might be willing (or have no choice but) to settle for another...

Buchholz would be an excellent minor league depth signing, like he was last year for Arizona. He just shouldn’t be counted on for a full season. But for short stretches, he’s a good solution, better than Johnson or Velasquez...

Technically, MLBTR mentioned him as a non-tender candidate. That he wasn't let go when Carson Smith was shows DD has some faith in him, although we will see when arb offers go out. By no means is he a lock for closer, but until a better name enters the picture, he is definitely in the running. I mean, I bet I can find people who want to hand the role to Ryan Brasier...

If he gets healthy like he was in Milwaukee, why not? Of course I have no way of knowing if he ever will be, but DD certainly does. And he did acquire Thornburg for a reason.
