  1. Shouldn’t that be more applicable for a right fielder than a long reliever/spot starter?
  2. That was in 2016. They’ve passed on one since. The Sox also made a selection in 2014, a pitcher named Jandel Gustave or something. He was traded to the Royals along with his Rule 5 status...
  3. Deals can be worked out. It’s very common for the selecting team and the team losing the player to work out a trade or cash settlement that can negate the requirement for the player to be on the roster. This allows the selected player to go to the minors...
  4. Well then maybe you’re right. Henry LOVES spends money. I think he approves signing Harper and Machado and Corbin and Kimbrel and then gives DD a bonus for recognizing these are the best talents. Or are only you allowed to be sarcastic?
  5. Johnson probably needs at least one more injury to make the team. Hey, if Thornburg isn’t recovered enough to get an arbitration offer, that might work...
  6. If the Sox sign Eovaldi, Johnson might be in a fight for a roster spot with Wright and Workman. Johnson has the advantage of being left-handed but the disadvantage of being the worst pitcher of the three. If injuries do not create a spot for Johnson, he might be traded or released. Velasquez has options and probably starts the season in Pawtucket, barring significant injuries. But he will get his innings in...
  7. Goldschmidt was never an option for the Sox with their farm system. But to say the Sox shouldn’t be interested in one of the best sluggers in the game because of a kid who was in high school last year? Casas is miles away if he pans out at all. At least Dalbec is in AA ball and might be good. But players have done better inAA than him and still flopped (Middlebrooks?), so I hope DD isn’t passing over options just because of these guys. Ditto Chavis, whose future position is a question mark and is probably 50/50 on whether or not he’s still in the organization in April...
  8. Why not just “platoon” Pedroia with Holt? Dietrich plays multiple positions, but not because he is a versatile defender. The Marlins have been trying to find one he can actually play. As a hitter, he has power and not much else. I’m all for getting a 2b if there are fears about Pedroia’s knee, but Dietrich is not the guy I’d go for...
  9. I think there might be. These drafts rarely produce immediate stars, but there are some helpful players. And if nothing else, it's a quick way to add help to the Sox upper minors, which will be important this season...
  10. So no on moving JD to first - a position about half of the starters in MLB learn at the Major League level - but yes on moving Mookie to second, a position he hasn’t played in years because he’s been establishing himself as the best defensive RF in the game today?
  11. I can see why. When it comes to off-season medical reports, the only reliable news is bad news...
  12. And in other rumors, we now se Plan B if Eovaldi doesn’t sign https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/will-red-sox-bid-years-japanese-free-agent-prize
  13. If it doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t sweat it. The Sox play what? Nine games in NL parks each year? If JD or one of the outfielders sit for nine games, it won’t be the Kiss of Death for this team. It would be nice to have him play 1b in the World Series. But then from what we saw of Cora this year, he seems to have no problem with a player making his MLB debut at 1b in the World Series...
  14. And if he is, that all but kills Swihart’s roster spot. This, of course, operates on the massive assumption that everyone is healthy, which is less likely than not...
  15. In that respect, it does make sense. But Bradley is probably 4th in terms of important Killer Bs.
  16. It very well could be, but the Sox have a few deadweight candidates who might be less valuable than the 40 man roster spot they occupy. I’m thinking Marcus Walden, Marco Hernandez and Chandler Shepherd, to name three. If the Sox were able to get Junior Fernandez from the Cardinals, it might be worth it to let one of them go. Fernandez throws about 99mph, which does make him a Dombrowski type pitcher. Of course he might not be available when the Sox have their pick...
  17. Are people suggesting trading Bradley for Cain? Why would either team make that deal?
  18. The Sox have a few needs and an open 40 man roster spot. With the Rule 5 draft pending, will/should they participate? It’s another possibly sneaky way to grab that extra bullpen arm. The biggest issue is keeping the player on the 25 man roster for a full year. But deals can be worked out to circumvent this. It happens all the time...
  19. Way to counter my point DH by directly supporting it...
  20. Hey Bellhorm, I’m the one oversimplifying a tad? Like I said, any criticism of any aspect of DD - whom I was critical of at time of hire but I’ve reversed on - and suddenly there are too many who look to discredit or disparage you...
  21. Well that makes for a s***** lyric...
  22. The Cliff Paranoia isn’t about being negative, and it seems to me anyone who acknowledges it is suddenly harassed for not openly fellating Dombrowski. The talk of the Cliff is just about acknowledging it’s existence and hoping DD reacts accordingly. But it’s not going to be easy and he’s probably not going to be able to keep everyone and getting replacements via trade is also tough with no farm...
  23. They do have two books detailing their whining ...
  24. If you look a the Yankees in the late 1990s, that’s exactly what they did. Everyone remembers the Core Four, but the rest of that team could have been called The Revolving Door. Out with David Wells. In with Clemens. Out with Boggs. In with Brosius. Wetter and out. Rivera steps up. DD might be as old with this Sox team, but I’d be surprised. I think I’d be angrier if he did start breaking it up.
  25. So he’s what Graham Nash called “King Midas in Reverse”...
