Hard to say how greedy he was when all he turned down was a Qualifying Offer at a time when everyone turned down Qualifying Offers. Were there other offers he was also rejecting?

Eovaldi might not have been a #3, but bear in mind at 29, he’s young by free agent standards. Like with Porcello, whose numbers prior to 2016 were very much like Eovaldi’s (but with much greater IP), the goal here might be to get a pitcher on his way up to #3 production rather than one who gets there on his way back down...

Well, none of Cueto, Darvish and Zimmermann were signed to be mid-rotation starters, and each were typically good for 4-5 fWAR at the time they signed their contracts. That these pitchers may pitch more like mid-rotation starters now is more of a cautionary tale about free agency than a real price point for mid-rotation talent. These guys we’re all signed to be aces or #1 pitchers; they just aren’t working out that way anymore and may not ever again...

The Mariners’ backup catcher is entering his 10th professional season as a catcher and is on an MLB roster heading into April for the first time. As he has actually hit fairly well in the minors, one can assume his defense has been a big factor in spending 9 seasons there. Do you think Freitas will improve at all?

I thought it was odd he referred to Leon’s physique by saying he let himself go. Maybe if Leon wasn’t an athlete, he’d be 5’10 400lbs. Maybe this is the “fine tuned” version. There’s no physical standard for one’s personal “best shape of his life”...

Be fair to Drew. That was in the early years of the QO system and no one really knew how protective teams would be if their picks while signing free agents. Teams weren’t all that protective of them in the previous system...

The Sox also had a lot of mediocre and bad pitchers while Varitek was catching. He was a catcher, not a magician...

Except that Drew didn’t go unsigned because he was asking for record-setting money for a player at his position. Drew just didn’t stand out over other available options who didn’t have draft pick compensation attached. Kimbrel (or more accurately, Kimbrel’s agent) completely misread the market for closers this year, and apparently didn’t budge enough from initial demands. Same as Keuchel. Beyond their own obstinance, there is no reason for either pitcher to still be available...

It’s probably the most likely outcome. Lately we’ve seen teams releasing backup catchers, not acquiring them...

Yes. The part where any team picking him up off waivers is responsible for his entire $2.48 mill salary. While certainly not the most prohibitive salary in MLB, other catchers like Rene Rivera and Tom Murphy can be had for less. He’s going to clear waivers. Boston will have ample opportunity to bring him back...

It’s possible a big part of the reason Eovaldi was signed was to get a veteran pitcher to replace Porcello’s production. Next year, not only does the Bogarts/Porcello money leave the roster, but so does the $12.75 mill tied up in 1b, with the anticipation of Chavis or Dalbec in the wings in some capacity. It is possible that Bogaerts and Porcello get replaced by Chatham and Hernandez, but not likely. If Porcello is amenable to a reasonable (re: drastic) paycut, it is possible he returns and Chavis/Dalbec or Hernandez or both are dealt for a SS...

They DFAd HRam to prevent his option from kicking in, but that doesn’t change the fact that they DFAd him to keep Swihart. After all, they could have DFAd Hanley before the season started, too...

If the concern is a drop off in him leading off games with home runs, he only did so 5 times last year. So the drop off should not be too drastic...

Rene Rivera was released today. Rivera is a no bat/all glove catcher who was once valued at over 5.0 fWAR despite playing part time and providing 0 offense. In the last 3 years, he has totaled 3.2 fWAR despite combining for about 530 unproductive plate appearances. Very similar to Leon. Rivera is older, but his presence on the market for free does make it tougher to trade Leon...
