  1. Who I are you talking about? Colten Brewer? He’s not 22; he’s 26. And he did pitch 337 IP in the minors but he walked 109 batters, not 33...

    CJ Cron

The Rays DFAd CJ Cron yesterday rather than pay his expected arbitration salary of $5.2mill. Cron played 140 games last year with 560 plate appearances and hit 30 home runs with an OPS+ of 123. He was valued at 2.0 bWAR and 2.1 fWAR. Ok I heard the Rays might have money to spend this off-season. But they can’t spend $5mill on a 30 HR hitter? Do they think they can get one cheaper?
  3. Reportedly multiple teams that are interested in Eovaldi want him as a closer. He has said he’s open to the idea but prefers to start, which is probably exactly what his agent told him to say. Frankly any team that wants him as a closer is being stupid. His predicted contracts all have him making starter money which is more than any of the closers already on the market, and there are lots of them. If a team is willing to pay Eovaldi $15mill to close, for just a bit more you can probably get Kimbrel. And for a lot less, you can get Robertson. Or Familia or Miller or Allen or Ramos or any of the other closers already available...
  4. For the second time, HE’S NOT NINETEEN. He turns 27 in February and has not been 19 since 2011. So we do all know how he’s going to develop...
  5. I meant, maybe Dombrowski wants the option to make a pick in the Rule 5 draft. I’d be surprised if he actually made a pick, but he needs an open roster spot to even be eligible. I also think someone like Eovaldi fills that spot soon enough...
  6. Maybe Dombrowski wanted to leave one spot open so he has the option to make a pick...
  7. Soxprospects.com also has 39. The removals of Austin Maddox and William Cuevas brought them down to 33 and with 6 additions today back to 39. So one spot open and no Ockimey?
  8. Zero chance they save a spot for Felton to start the season. The guy has only pitched in A-ball and they are in no rush to see if he is Craig Hansen2.0...
  9. No one knows. The Sox are run by a guy who once DFAd a relief pitcher who had been drafted 2 years earlier so he could keep a 29yo career minor leaguer outfielder. He might DFA Pedroia for all we know..
  10. There are certainly teams with roster room or else there will be no Rule 5 draft. As for who they are, MLBTR will have an update st some point. They are probably just going to dangle him. I don’t think his stock is all that high right now and there are probably better players available. If someone takes him, DD has the option of working out a trade then. Sometimes teams are eager to do this because it removes the requirement of keeping him on the roster for a full season and the drafting team can let him develop a bit more in the minors...
  11. Maddox wasn’t released. He was outrighted to AAA, meaning he cleared waivers and was removed from the 40 man roster. Given his health status, this is not a surprise...
  12. I think Gabbard was the winning pitcher in a game where the Rangers scored like 33 runs for one of the highest (if not the highest) scores in MLB history. Hey, baseball trivia is it’s own legacy. Just ask Francisco Cabrera...
  13. Maybe they figured no one would take him? Or don’t care if they do?? Or will try to work out a trade if he is selected? DD does have his own player evaluations which don’t always agree with Bsseball America or soxprospects.com...
  14. If the Sox can find a taker. Reportedly Cora wants a defensive 3b, which might mean some interest in someone like the Angels’ Kaleb Cowart (my speculation- no published rumors). I could see a Swihart-Cowart swap, which looks funny with those two ethnically indeterminable names together. And makes sense for both teams and is actually fair. But DD probably aims higher... .
  15. The Sox added Chavis, Hernandez, Travis Lakins, Brewer, Josh Taylor and Denyi Reyes. They DFAd Cuevas to make room and apparently are willing to take their chances with Ockimey...
  16. He has options, so he very likely starts the year in Rhode Island and waits for a chance
  17. Quiroz turns 27 in February, which makes his trade more questionable. The guy was originally signed as Pedroia insurance. Maybe this is a sign the Sox think Pedroia is doing a lot better? Probably not. Cora reportedly wants a defensive 3b on the roster. That player might also be a 2b option. I do think Brewer will see some innings out of the pen in 2019. He does have to be placed on the 40 man roster, which makes him eligible...
  18. We now know Esteban Quiroz will not be an option at 2b next year as he was just desalt to the Padres for 26yo minor leagueRHP Colten Brewer...
  19. Apparently the Sox are about to acquire RHP Colten Brewer from San Diego to take one of these spots. Brewer is depth at best...
  20. But Butler did play in the majors. I look at guys like him and Bobby Scales and think they did make it. For every Butler who pops in and out, there are hundreds who never get that far..,
  21. The Sox did sign a minor league catcher named Juan Centeneo...
  22. Do they really see their dreams as shattered? I bet the Northern League is filled with guys who look at Daniel Nava as an inspiration...
  23. The deadline is today. The Sox have 5 open spots on their 40 man roster. Chavis, Hernandez and Ockimey are no-brainers. Do they add anyone else?
  24. The average length of an MLB careeer is less than one season. But then that’s why teams like the Long Island Ducks and Sugarland Skeeters exist - to fill their rosters with players who think they can capitalize on just one more chance...
  25. I would think most if not all MLB players have more confidence than any of us can conceive of a person having and it isn’t shattered as easily as many believe...
