  1. I can see why. When it comes to off-season medical reports, the only reliable news is bad news...
  2. And in other rumors, we now se Plan B if Eovaldi doesn’t sign https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/will-red-sox-bid-years-japanese-free-agent-prize
  3. If it doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t sweat it. The Sox play what? Nine games in NL parks each year? If JD or one of the outfielders sit for nine games, it won’t be the Kiss of Death for this team. It would be nice to have him play 1b in the World Series. But then from what we saw of Cora this year, he seems to have no problem with a player making his MLB debut at 1b in the World Series...
  4. And if he is, that all but kills Swihart’s roster spot. This, of course, operates on the massive assumption that everyone is healthy, which is less likely than not...
  5. In that respect, it does make sense. But Bradley is probably 4th in terms of important Killer Bs.
  6. It very well could be, but the Sox have a few deadweight candidates who might be less valuable than the 40 man roster spot they occupy. I’m thinking Marcus Walden, Marco Hernandez and Chandler Shepherd, to name three. If the Sox were able to get Junior Fernandez from the Cardinals, it might be worth it to let one of them go. Fernandez throws about 99mph, which does make him a Dombrowski type pitcher. Of course he might not be available when the Sox have their pick...
  7. Are people suggesting trading Bradley for Cain? Why would either team make that deal?
  8. The Sox have a few needs and an open 40 man roster spot. With the Rule 5 draft pending, will/should they participate? It’s another possibly sneaky way to grab that extra bullpen arm. The biggest issue is keeping the player on the 25 man roster for a full year. But deals can be worked out to circumvent this. It happens all the time...
  9. Way to counter my point DH by directly supporting it...
  10. Hey Bellhorm, I’m the one oversimplifying a tad? Like I said, any criticism of any aspect of DD - whom I was critical of at time of hire but I’ve reversed on - and suddenly there are too many who look to discredit or disparage you...
  11. Well that makes for a s***** lyric...
  12. The Cliff Paranoia isn’t about being negative, and it seems to me anyone who acknowledges it is suddenly harassed for not openly fellating Dombrowski. The talk of the Cliff is just about acknowledging it’s existence and hoping DD reacts accordingly. But it’s not going to be easy and he’s probably not going to be able to keep everyone and getting replacements via trade is also tough with no farm...
  13. They do have two books detailing their whining ...
  14. If you look a the Yankees in the late 1990s, that’s exactly what they did. Everyone remembers the Core Four, but the rest of that team could have been called The Revolving Door. Out with David Wells. In with Clemens. Out with Boggs. In with Brosius. Wetter and out. Rivera steps up. DD might be as old with this Sox team, but I’d be surprised. I think I’d be angrier if he did start breaking it up.
  15. So he’s what Graham Nash called “King Midas in Reverse”...
  16. You sure about that? Talk to a Cubs’ fan. They have this weird list of all the cursed activities, one of which actually includes a black cat. And I’ve really heard them blame everything on the Curse. “Well how else do you explain Leon Durham missing that ground all in 1984?” Umm ...because Durham was a s***** fielder?
  17. I I imagine DD has a pretty good idea about Pedroia already...
  18. Did they have more of those than the Cubs or Guardians or Twins or Phillies or any of the other MLB teams with insanely long title droughts? And I can tell you first hand, prior to 2016 a lot of Cubs’ fans did believe there was a curse on the team. I bet there were plenty of equally susceptible Sox fans...
  19. It’s possible. The Sox might have a fourth bench spot open, which means they might have room for a third baseman late inning defensive player. Or a second baseman. Or an actual fourth outfielder. Or Swihart. This assumes Pedroia is on the DL, which he might not be....
  20. No one ever talked about the Curse of the Bambino until 1990 when Dan Shaughnessy used the expression for a book title. There was no basis for any curse beyond a title drought, the type of which were extremely commonplace in MLB throughout the 20th century. People who cite the Curse for anything are just throwing mystical causes for simple frustration and attributing to divine forces to mask their ignorance. Cubs fans did this for years, too. On the other hand, the cliff is based on having a really weak farm, which is the consensus of every scouting organization in existence today and will make it difficult to replace the Sox younger stars as free agency approaches. The funny thing is more people seem to believe in the Curse than the Cliff, despite only the Cliff having evidence that it exists...
  21. Walker will absolutely prioritize a starting role over a reserve one, as will every free agent on this market. But will he get one and what will he do if he doesn’t? And given the possible absence of Pedroia and the limited budget of the Sox, Boston might be his best chance at a starting role. (Don’t forget his “starting role” in New York was temporary and everyone knew it, including Walker.)
  22. So the defensive replacement for 3b should be the potential starting 2b? Cora apparently made the comment about wanting a defensive 3b after Nunez option was picked up. I think he would like someone else. It may not happen, but it’s on the wish list...
  23. However they might do something about third base as Cora has expressed interest in a defensive player to compliment Devers. Now said defensive player might be capable of playing 2b. Neil Walker, for example, is an excellent defensive 3b who happens to have a lot of experience at 2b as well. And if last year is any indication (1yr $4mill), he’s not a bank breaker...
  24. Typically big contracts involve paying for production in the early years only. Pedroia is no different. The AAV on his contract is still pretty low ($13mill-ish) so it shouldn’t be a big deal. If Dombrowski can’t build a good team for $196 mill, then maybe it’s time to step aside...
  25. Everyone gets excited about prospects over veterans. Prospects are all wrapped up in glimmering layers of potential and the ceiling is unknown!! Why this 22yo could be the next Bryce Harper!! Yet everyone knows and no one wants to admit it’s far more likely he is the next Bryce Brentz. Fans overreact to stupid levels sometimes. Jacoby Ellsbury is coming so we need to run Coco Crisp out of town!! Jon Papelbon needs to go because he is in the way of Daniel Bard assuming his rightful role as closer!! But the veterans are usually veterans for a reason. A lot of them have beaten out younger kids for their jobs before and can do it again. And never fall for “rebuilding.” With a few exceptions,“rebuilding” is the baseball euphemism for “going cheap.”
