  1. Machado has spent his entire career in Baltimore. Chicago and Philly are both mega-markets compared to that. Not to mention, he probably owns a house and Baltimore is probably within commuting distance from his house. Know what else might be within commuting distance from that house? Philadelphia. And Chicago didn’t take on Yonder Alonso’s entire contract because of his baseball skills. Not when Justin Bour was practically free. There is a definite plan to exploit that connection. Sure the money will need to be there first. But Yonder is a good bet for a tie breaker...
  2. Because he likes the most popular ice cream flavor in the world? That doesn’t make him a serial killer. Now the mounting number of drifters buried in his crawl space is another matter...
  3. And considering the amount of times it’s repeated, a very overblown assist. Players recommend friends/acquaintances/former teammates and opponents all the time to GMs. The ultimate decision to act on these recommendations lies solely with the GM...
  4. I agree. After blasting Dombrowski last off-season for not making these types of moves, it’s nice to see him finally taking my advice...
  5. They’re enamored. Just not to the point of signing him. It sounds like they think they’re in the driver’s seat and can steer the overall value of the deal down. But the high anticipated overall value is what is keeping most teams out, so if they drive it down too far, they risk losing their lead position. And “too far” might not be as far as they think, with Chicago (who really should be taken seriously) and Philadelphia looming...
  6. If he struggles and gives up lots of home runs at McCoy Stadium, who cares? The worst thing that happens in that case is he stifles the development of 30yo Marcus Walden until Ramírez gets released. But if he reverts to the pitcher he was pre-2018, he could be a useful addition....
  7. Most teams find the biggest obstacle with Machado to be the expectations of the terms of the contract...
  8. And yet he was worth 3.4 fWAR as recently as 2017. I guess he must be a spectacular baserunner...
  9. Actually Tim Beckham would make a ton of sense for the Yankees. The Murphy chatter was based on his ability to slide over to first base when (not if) Bird goes on the DL and Voit shows NYC why he isn’t a full time starter...
  10. Adam Sandler has a net worth of $420million. Most of it made by writing and starring in some truly awful movies that combined contain a very limited number of jokes. Is he paid “based on performance?”
  11. Who, besides people working for tips or commissions, gets paid based on performance? Most people have a salary or hourly wage and that’s what they get paid, regardless of successes and failures...
  12. It’s the Way of the Patriots. Also I believe that type of behavior spawned the phrase ”if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Also while the fans might think of Machado as Public Enemy #1 times Satan times Dick Cheney, it is entirely possible the players and coaches don’t...
  13. By waiting for the price to come down, perhaps he plans on entering the competitive Jim Johnson Sweepstakes....
  14. Technically BDC buried those projections...
  15. Actually he was a second year GM. And his finest moment was signing a DH who had been released by the Minnesota Twins...
  16. Hey I was working from memory here!...
  17. “If you load $20 to a person, and you never see that person again, it was probably worth it...”
  18. True, but the importance of starter IP is vital. This is one big reason why the opener strategy will struggle to catch on. A few years ago, both KC and TB simultaneously adopted the strategy of minimizing starter workload and going bullpen heavy. The teams ranked 29 and 30 in starter innings about 1/2 way thru the season but ranked 1 and 2 in team ERA. In both cases, their staffs fell apart as bullpen workloads increased...
  19. Reportedly he also instructed the Yankee hitters about the value of fouling off close pitches to extend the at bat and increase the chances of drawing a walk. And those late 90s Yankee teams really did weaponize the walk...
  20. What was changed? Wouldn’t the claiming team take on his contract? Not that Castillo would get claimed anyway. His chances of being claimed on waivers are roughly equal to the chances of me being claimed on waivers...
  21. As an inhabitant of the Windy City, I’ve seen Zach pitch multiple times. Not a cannon for an arm, but a good cutter he relies on. When he is on, he’s solid. But like any pitcher who lives on the corners and backdoors, he can have struggles with control. The big issue is he missed 2018 for Tommy John surgery, which he had in June. He may not be ready come April...
  22. But a counter argument is the less stress you put on the bullpen, the better. A team should have about 1450 IP per season. If your starters only give you 750-800 IP, then the bullpen has to make up 650-700 IP, which averaged out to 93-100 IP per pitcher in seven-man bullpen. Of course, teams will use in excess of seven relievers over 162 games. But even if all 7 give you 70 IP apiece, that still leaves your depth to cover 160-210 IP per season, or about the same as a TOR starter. (Having a LOOGY who only pitched 20-30 IP. not only inflates this amount, but leads to other issues as well.) While 5IP 0 ER is golden, the idea does need to be to minimize bullpen workload...
  23. Tony Perez doesn’t belong in the HOF either. But it goes back further than that. Dave Bancroft and Ross Youngs might be the two single worst players in the Hall of Fame....
  24. The The risks might be equal in terms of each player getting hurt, but Eovaldi is the greater risk in terms of salary on the shelf....
  25. Unless he was claimed (fingers crossed)...
