  1. A jerk? Isn’t he like 3 months old?
  2. There is also a certain value in proximity to MLB. Then might never see AA ball, as many, many don’t. Dalbec has already reached that hurdle...
  3. Edwin Encarnacion was not tied up long term, so that’s ok. My point is, they could have gotten a better prospect(s), but Seattle prioritized not paying money. This has been confirmed in multiple media outlets. (Buster Olney on Twitter and whoever that was Carpin posted a link to.) Even you expected more than a single rookie ball teenager with an FV of 40 that the Mariners already traded away once for a borderline relief arm...
  4. It should be enough to get him some spot start work in the rotation, which is all I’m asking for...
  5. And yet his FV is still only 40. That’s not a bad Future Value, but most teams have 20 or so players with an FV that high or higher...
  6. Maybe not. Dipoto did once trade Then away to acquire the immortal Nick Rumbelow. I don’t think he prized Then much at that time. Certainly the folks at Fangraphs didn’t think Then was much of a prize, describing him as having “middling stuff and physical projection” and assigning him a modest Future Value of 40. The same value is met or exceeded by 22 prospects in the Red Sox farm system, the same system you said the Mariners would “not be interested in spare parts from.” Fangraphs also cites a Buster Olney tweet stating the Mariners dealt EE to the Yankees because the Yankees were willing to absorb more money. Sounds like a straight up salary dump...
  7. No, but I bet most GMs view their declines as potentially coinciding. If Sale still merits a raise with his loftier peak, Porcello is not likely to see such a drastic pay cut. I think Porcello either gets a smaller AAV in the $16-18mill range or sees a slight increase but on a short term deal...
  8. Think they go with just Smart and Brown in the backcourt? Or make any major moves or signings? I do think Ainge keeps Rozier. He has always seemed to like him...
  9. I wouldn’t say Cora “has” to keep 13 pitchers on the roster. In fact, if Nunez, Pearce and Holt are all healthy at once, he can’t unless the Sox demote Chavis...
  10. There was a time when I liked Holt better in the OF, but not so much any more. I will give him that he hustles and goes all out out there, but I’d like the Sox to have a defense-oriented fourth OF. But I know that’s not on the radar for 2019. Not enough room on the roster. Even yesterday’s hero Marco Hernandez might feel the squeeze when everyone is healthy...
  11. Duran might be an illusion but Casas has shown significant improvement...
  12. It would explain why he keeps re-signing Sabathia. We’ll know more of he makes a deadline push for Tommy Hunter...
  13. I’m guessing they dealt him for financial reasons and maybe he’s not more financially viable to them now?
  14. While that appears to be the best guess, I assume the Yankees know something about that. Or maybe they want to see Luke Voit play LF...
  15. I believe he’s actually older than Porcello, and made his MLB debut a year later despite starting his skipping the minors...
  16. C His velocity has topped out higher than 91mph, but he does lack stamina and a third pitch. But he’s still better than Johnson...
  17. Playing Encarnacion over Brett Gardner is a huge upgrade. What I don’t get is why a lot of other teams passed. Plenty of teams could use him, and certainly the Yankee offer was easily toppable. While I don’t agree, I see why Boston passed. Money, and DD has a thing for Mitch Moreland. But Houston? Why? Was the salary too much for Tampa and Milwaukee? Maybe neither wanted to offer a good enough prospect to get Seattle to cover more? Why not Texas? They could use him and show the league they have no intention of fading away quietly. The Rockies and the Diamondbacks could have also used him. Imagine EE in Coors! But everyone passed. And no way did DiPoto not do his due diligence and ask. Probably asked other teams, too...
  18. Either way, I really doubt DiPoto, much like yourself, was thinking about a single player from rookie ball as the return for Encarnacion...
  19. My mistake . I meant to comment about their age at free agency, which is a huge factor. Machado was 26. Mookie will be 28...
  20. I’m sure Dipoto talked to all the relevant GMs and everyone passed. You weren’t keeping EE from anyone. He wouldn’t be doing his job if he did anything else. Or the counter argument is that DiPoto had his heart set on a pre-A-ball unranked teenager whose missed the entire season to date. Very specific need. You’re lucky the Yankees had just such a player...
  21. Not happy at all. And while I suspect Mitch Moreland was the reason the Sox passed, that’s not enough in my eyes...
  22. Sale’s deal was for less money, but he took it to avoid risk. He’s still post prime, and Porcello is the same age. If you think Dombrowski is going to offer a 3 year $45mill deal to Porcello, that deal feels very light compared to the contracts he likes to write. His keyboard doesn’t even have a “$45mill” key...
  23. So is Chris Freakin’ Sale, whose like 3 months younger. But Sale got a raise...
  24. . 2b is basically the same names as last year, plus Chavis. Last year it was an area of need. Is Chavis enough to make it not one?
  25. It never is, although by moving for a non-closing pending free agent, the cost is typically minimal. Kind of a s***** list this year. Closer Sean Doolittle does check most of the boxes the Sox could use this year...
