  1. It’s not. It was in response to “any group of people.”...
  2. Robot arbiters now!!
  3. I think Thornburg would like to do well, but his focus is re-establishing his pitching repertoire and on on getting loose without injuring himself so he doesn’t miss another season...
  4. That’s my point. They’re absolutely concerned. Especially since they know it all stops coming in at a relatively young age. I think the most laughable notion is when fans criticize a player who signs a big deal with a bad team. “He’ll never win anything there!!” While I’m sure they all want to win titles, do you think any athletes prioritize title chances during contract negotiations? This is their livelihood...
  5. Don’t you think they’ll keep as many as possible and work things out over the season? Domingo Tapia has out-pitched Thornburg, Workman and Johnson. But who of those 4 is the least likely to break camp heading to Boston?
  6. Sure there’s a chance. Do you think that chance rests solely on his spring training or his past two non-existent seasons in Boston? The Sox saw enough to offer him $1.75mill this off-season. Think they reversed their position based on 4IP? They could have non-tendered and re-signed him like they did with Carson Smith...
  7. For all the gripes about Devers’ defense, he was the Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year in 2017. He must have some skills...
  8. If the Sox bullpen looked great, would you consider these games meaningful? And representative? Like most, you would probably still assume it was a potential problem. And you would base it on the track record (or lack thereof) the personnel involved as opposed to a 5 or 6 inning sample against the”B” squads of the Grapefruit League. Therefore we both know no true meaning can be extracted from these warmup games. And this indeed makes them meaningless...
  9. As they have agents, agents themselves are largely concerned with money. It’s their primary focus. Therefore it is safe to assume the advice coming from the agents is geared to maximizing the amount of money the player can get back. Players hire agents for their financial advice, among other things. While some go against it for whatever reason, most do not...
  10. I’m still surprised DD didn’t even make a waiver claim for Josh Fields. He could have DFAd Sandy Leon and covered all but $100,000 of the cost, which then solves the catching issue as well...
  11. Well, considering the big off-season get was some guy named Colten Brewer, I’d say there was cause for alarm even if they were pitching lights in spring training...
  12. I’d be more in favor of trading Dalbec, but certainly moving Chavis is a possibility...
  13. Any group of people? That’s probably about one third of all pro sports teams. In Boston alone, you would lose the Celtics and Patriots. I’m actually in favor of the colleges that use indigenous Native American monikers. If not for NCAA football, I would have no idea where most Native American tribes were from. Very educational. But “Redskins” is just an embarrassment...
  14. As a fellow Irishman, I would think the moniker for Norte Dame to be more offensive...
  15. He also won it in 2017 and 2018...
  16. The dumbest part is, changing it would not only help the image of his team, it would give the opportunity to sell all new merchandise. “Throw away those Redskin jerseys!! Come get a new one to support our team - the Washington Drunken Irish Bastards!” And the sad part is, that new name is actually less offensive than Redskins...
  17. Your call, cpl176... 😉
  18. ...Which has been the context of the conversation...
  19. Well they do sell tickets and televise games, granted the money is less. As for “meaning nothing,” it doesn’t with regards to the upcoming season. If you come in last in the Grapefruit League, it doesn’t mean you’re coming in last in the regular season...
  20. So much for “zero chance.” Fields cleared waivers and was released. Not sure why no waiver claim from Dombrowski here, unless there is something physically wrong with Fields. Which would explain his otherwise confusing DFA to begin with...
  21. I’ve seen too many seasons where the Frapefruit League “champion” and the Cactus League “champion” go on to win less than 140 games combined. My theory is because these teams are inherently weaker to begin with, so more minor leaguers try their hardest to make an impression. And maybe they get that opportunity because of how weak the team is ...
  22. Absolutely they could “wait” themselves out of the postseason if the bullpen sucks and they don’t react. But fixing it now operates on the assumption the bullpen will be the biggest need. Spending their limited allowance on a reliever might be unwise if there are injuries. Since most teams are not swapping relievers in April and May, DD did acquire a decent amount of depth to give shots to before some other teams’ fire sale...
  23. No relationship. Done....
  24. And it’s ok to overreact one time or for a casual fan. But baseball junkies like those of us who post on BDC all off-season need to know better. Of course, deep down, I think the occasion criticism about spring training W-L records is commenting for the sake of commenting...
  25. It is a possibility. I’m still hoping the Sox can trade for Josh Fields...
