  1. Spring training records don’t matter. And if you get worried looking at the Sox record this spring, bear in mind that Gorky Hernandez and Sam Travis have more plate appearances than Mookie Betts and JD Martinez. If we ever replicate THAT situation in the regular season, yes, this team will perform like it does in spring training...
  2. Do we need a real estate thread?
  3. It certainly is a huge factor, but 3 of his 5 best ERA+ seasons have been in Boston...
  4. The Porcello contract might be the epitome of how these deals should (but rarely do) work out. He got the hefty pay raise and then the had the best seasons of his career. And he’ll probably start declining after tho season. Too often those deals involve pay a player for what he did as opposed to what he’s going to do.
  5. But he’s gotten better in Boston, although I think a lot of that improvement was carried by a stellar 2016..
  6. His ERA with the Tigers was 4.30. His ERA in Boston is 4.19. His ERA+ with the Tigers was 97. His ERA+ with the Red Sox is 106...
  7. Well if the Sox DFA Swihart, he goes through waivers, which establush a priority for claims. If a team with a low claim wants him, but doesn’t think he’ll make it past everyone above them, they can work out a trade during the waiver period...
  8. Dombrowski has made a career of spending HEAVILY on free agents, and if Henry gives him free reign, Betts is as good as locked up for the next decade plus. But will Henry give him Carte Blanche? I think Henry will employ simple logic - can spending $300mill on Betts give me an ROI of more than $300mill? If he thinks so, then it’s not as issue. But I do wonder how many of Sale, Betts and Bogaerts can be retained? Or can the Sox move Price to make it happen? (I know Price’s immense deal looks unmovable, but so did Robinson Cano’s four moths ago.)
  9. I never claimed it was an exciting thing. Just a little something I do almost out of reflex at this point...
  10. So... you’re saying Henry has no limits to his spending?
  11. It’s a very likely possibility...
  12. And it feels like Brasier made them fall in love with signing hard throwers who didn’t pitch for MLB organizations last year (Mejia, Runzler, Putnam)...
  13. Hey that’s been my thing through three forums now. I’ve even been called out for it on here before...
  14. Travis is learning a new position this year - DFA. But if the Sox had let Swihart try his hand at spelling Moreland, it might have gone a long way to eliminating the roster logjam. And I assume Swihart is still with this team because Dombrowski has some faith in him. Apparently it’s not enough faith to be a weak side platoon...
  15. It’s not like Bellhorn made up those boasts...
  16. It’s not a question of what he can afford. It’s a question of what he will pay for...
  17. I do, but I also understand the difference between Bogaerts and Chatham and the difference between Sale and Sharwyn. And the extremely relevant difference between Kimbrel / Britton / Robertson / Ottavino and Colten Brewer...
  18. Hey those flags fly forever...
  19. The BABIP is high, but the point of BABIP is that it’s not completely in control of the pitcher...
  20. It’s a small sample size, but in his role the majority were in tight games and the results are not indicative of someone who s*** himself.
  21. Aren’t you supposed to be in school?
  22. Bergman signed a 5 year $100 mill extension, not, per your original estimate, a 4 year $60mill extension...
  23. A more reasonable extension for Judge. Figure in 3 arbitration years, Judge easily gets $50mill. Maybe more, but probably not over $60mill. In free agency, if he goes 2 years earlier without the extension, he hits for his age 31 season. He’s probably looking at a JD Martinez contract (5 years $110 mill). So that gives him about $160-170 over the next 8 years. If he accepts it and hits the market at 33, he might be only looking at 4 years $70, giving $170mill over the next 8 years. Roughly even and absolutely worth it for Judge. If I was his agent, I’d tell him to take it...
  24. Not Betts. Pearce. Your original projection for Pearce was it would take a 4yr/$36mill contract to sign him at $9mill AAV. And you thought Judge would be worth a 4yr / $60mill extension at $15mill AAV. Or that Judge is worth $6mill per year more than a weak side platoon 1b. Just picking on your (slightly biased) projections...
  25. I don’t know. According to Jacko, Judge is only worth $6mill per year more than Pearce.
