  1. Except that Drew didn’t go unsigned because he was asking for record-setting money for a player at his position. Drew just didn’t stand out over other available options who didn’t have draft pick compensation attached. Kimbrel (or more accurately, Kimbrel’s agent) completely misread the market for closers this year, and apparently didn’t budge enough from initial demands. Same as Keuchel. Beyond their own obstinance, there is no reason for either pitcher to still be available...
  2. It’s probably the most likely outcome. Lately we’ve seen teams releasing backup catchers, not acquiring them...
  3. While the pitchers all loved Leon, it’s not as if Christian Vazquez is a pile of poop back there...
  4. Yes. The part where any team picking him up off waivers is responsible for his entire $2.48 mill salary. While certainly not the most prohibitive salary in MLB, other catchers like Rene Rivera and Tom Murphy can be had for less. He’s going to clear waivers. Boston will have ample opportunity to bring him back...
  5. It’s possible a big part of the reason Eovaldi was signed was to get a veteran pitcher to replace Porcello’s production. Next year, not only does the Bogarts/Porcello money leave the roster, but so does the $12.75 mill tied up in 1b, with the anticipation of Chavis or Dalbec in the wings in some capacity. It is possible that Bogaerts and Porcello get replaced by Chatham and Hernandez, but not likely. If Porcello is amenable to a reasonable (re: drastic) paycut, it is possible he returns and Chavis/Dalbec or Hernandez or both are dealt for a SS...
  6. But that was a pre-housecleaning Seattle...
  7. Of course, until last year the Sox had never had a 108 win season before in the team’s 116 year existence...
  8. Most don’t. That’s the one time when the starting pitcher is at his freshest...
  9. Swihart is under team control, but let’s not pretend re-signing Leon is going to be some protracted and lengthy negotiation process. If the Sox want him back, it’s easy to make happen...
  10. They DFAd HRam to prevent his option from kicking in, but that doesn’t change the fact that they DFAd him to keep Swihart. After all, they could have DFAd Hanley before the season started, too...
  11. Or the evidence in that they force fit Swihart into the lineup as a starting left fielder once. And that they DFAd the #3 hitter to keep him. DD has been a Swihart guy for a while now...
  12. You rave about Mike King, who really gets very little buzz and doesn’t seem like he’s much different than a lot of the Sox “non-prospects”...
  13. That can’t happen. Jacko said so...
  14. Maybe someone needed to start one...
  15. If the concern is a drop off in him leading off games with home runs, he only did so 5 times last year. So the drop off should not be too drastic...
  16. Rene Rivera was released today. Rivera is a no bat/all glove catcher who was once valued at over 5.0 fWAR despite playing part time and providing 0 offense. In the last 3 years, he has totaled 3.2 fWAR despite combining for about 530 unproductive plate appearances. Very similar to Leon. Rivera is older, but his presence on the market for free does make it tougher to trade Leon...
  17. I’d say JD Martinez would be a great option there. I do think his opt out is more likely after 2020 than 2019...
  18. Has Eric Van shared this with American League hitters? They seem blissfully unaware of his awesomeness. Van also seems alone in his conclusion that Johnson is “above average.” That Johnson was worth 0.3 wins more than a replacement level pitcher would strongly counter this, even if you take into account his IP total. His only “above average” pitch is his curveball. It’s tough to get above average pitching out of below average pitches that get put into play all the time...
  19. If the Sox just want a cheap defensive CF, those are not always tough to find. The Mets got Keon Broxton this off-season for next to nothing...
  20. I do think Arenado might be a better comp for Betts than Trout or Harper, largely due to age...
  21. Baseball?
  22. Have you ever read your own posts about Yankee pitching prospects? Honestly, replace the words Sharwyn, Houk and Hernandez with King, Loasigia and Garcia. And Abreu. And Cessa. And Tarpley. And then end by saying they have too many pitching prospects. And it’s you.
  23. Oh well. Guess the Sox shouldn’t make that deal. Not like Dombrowski reads my posts anyway...
  24. Except that Jeffress is already out t start the season and Knebel is having UCL issues, which might mean TJ...
  25. Now you’re making me sad
