  1. Duffy won’t be free. Would you trade Dalbec or Hernandez or Duran for him?
  2. I have heard that some teams are hesitant to use pitchers in their pre-arb years as closers, primarily to keep the cost down. But I can’t say for certain whether or not this was ever actually done...
  3. I believe it was Betts and Workman for Kemp with the Sox taking the entire contract, which for Kemp at the time had 6 years and over $120mill remaining...
  4. Now at the time, harmony was frequently comparing Middlebrooks to Mark Reynolds, which many felt was awful since for some stupid reason, they don’t think Reynolds has had a good career. But if Middlebrooks was comparable to Reynolds, and Chavis is comparable to Middlebrooks, does that mean Chavis should be compared to Reynolds? Might Chavis be looking at a career in which he gets over 6,000 PA, hits 300 HRs and has a career OPS+ of 104? I’ll take that...
  5. I think it’s funny that 33 games get written off as easy because they were not against teams that played in the 2018 postseason. And then 7 more get written off because they were against a team from the 2018 postseason, but not a good one. Exactly what games matter?
  6. Maybe he knows that, too, and is acting accordingly. He’s what Graham Nash called “King Midas in Reverse”...
  7. But injuries can play a major factor. And even these lesser teams are still made of Major League players capable of getting and staying hot. Odds are very good for the Sox, but you never can tell if some team is just going to put everything together at once. The White Sox and Angels in particular might be two such teams...
  8. Yes Cora is running the pen using something I call The Notin Method, which is “use your best reliever against their best hitters and don’t worry about the save.” Although this method has also been called “just running a bullpen before the days of specialized closers.”
  9. But what were the odds for Oakland last year or Minnesota the year before? Sometimes there is just that super long shot that makes it in and bumps out one of the favorites...
  10. AAA is barely a developmental step any more. It’s more used nowadays to stack the bulk of minor league free agents and a chunk of players on the 40 man roster but not the 25 man roster.
  11. If my daughter was a son, I was fighting for the name Koji Brady Notin...
  12. Are you sure Holt has no options?
  13. Well, they were trying for a 6 out save and lacked a good set up guy to handle the 8th
  14. I don’t believe in that mascot.
  15. I like him better than Foulke, but Foulke was definitely the guy at the right time...
  16. Would you promote a player based on RBIs? Sort of like saying “We’re moving you up because everyone in front of you keeps getting on base.”
  17. No love for Tom Gordon? (Isn’t that a title of a Stephen King book?) You’d think getting 46 saves in 47 chances at least gets him some mention...
  18. Do they need to sneak him through waivers? According to soxprospects.com, he still has one option left..
  19. It won’t be easy at all to replace Porcello, who is still only 30 years old despite his long career. The big factor will be the money and years he is loooking for. And then if the Sox can fit him into the budget. What really hurts is that the Sox don’t have much in the way of minimum wage replacements on the horizon forcing there way on to the roster and freeing up resources. It might come down to re-signing Porcello vs tendering Bradley. Bradley is not making that as difficult as the Sox would like...
  20. Possibly, but it’s not so crazy to think they’d keep him as backup catcher. It’s not like there is another obvious name in the system barking at the door...
  21. My bad. I was thinking about Rodriguez against Colorado. But I did also think Porcello was left in too long...
  22. ERA doesn’t always tell the whole story with relievers. Porcello left the game with 2 runners on base and the bullpen was charged with keeping them on base. Both runners did score. Sure it was a tough job, but it was also one that didn’t get done....
  23. And a blown save isn’t always a loss...
  24. A “save opportunity” can become a hold. It just doesn’t become one until another reliever takes over. That’s probably why they get listed as blown saves; you can’t assume another reliever is going to pitch.
