  1. The full throttle thing was stupid and the subsequent explanation was insulting and blatantly false. But clearly the Sale trade was intended to be more than just a salary dump. They had at least one offer that saved more money and they did try to get an actual player to fulfill a position of need. Right?
  2. But would a Ryan-less Twins team want Duran? They have outfielders with higher bWAR in LF (Bader) and CF (Buxton) already. Granted, Bader is only 0.1 better, but that still makes Duran an odd choice for an improvement. Catcher, 1b and RF look like bigger needs. SS, too, but they have plenty of cash tied up there. And no, they don’t want Casas. Not for Ryan, anyway…
  3. Brock proposed Duran as the centerpiece of a Ryan trade. But if the Twins are trading Ryan, does he really make sense for them? A third team (Philadelphia?) does change everything. I still doubt Mullins is the final piece here…
  4. Unlikely maybe. But if 84 win AZ can sneak into the World Series with Zac Gallen, Merril Kelly, Brandon Pfaadt and no one else, anything is possible. It’s all about getting hot at the right time…
  5. Nate Eaton got demoted. But doesn’t someone need to be DFAd or moved to the 60 day IL to get Yoshida on the 40 man roster in the first place?
  6. Lowe (98) and Steer (92) both have OPS+ below league average. Naylor (128) is much better in this regard. If you value StatCast, none of these three are particularly impressive. Rhys Hoskins would be better than all of them. 4’4” Andrew Vaughn even more so, but he is not likely to be available anymore…
  7. The list is growing. From 2004-2022, the list was : 1. Ryan Zimmerman But the list from 2004-2024 has now grown to: 1. Ryan Zimmerman 2. Nolan Schanuel Its seriously rare air…
  8. I think the Angels might be a bit hesitant to trade Schanuel, who is on the extremely short list of position players to make their MLB debut the same calendar year in which they were drafted. They clearly liked that college product a lot…
  9. So how many are glad this thread turned out to be incorrect and Romy Gonzalez (.955 OPS) has NOT turn into Mark Vientos (.623 OPS)?
  10. Suarez might also be a bit too popular as a target this month. The Yankees and Cubs, for example, are likely to be interested. Josh Naylor strikes me as the best rental target.. Rhys Hoskins felt like the most likely., but he is currently out with a sprained thumb. Josh Bell is probably not worth acquiring. If the Rays make Yandy Diaz available, he has potential, but their plans are always difficult to determine beforehand. Not sure who else is available…
  11. Doubtful the Sox get anywhere near a #2 starter at the deadline. If the plan is to to hope Toro can continue to produce and stay .070 above his career BABIP in hopes that a #2 starter is the alternative, maybe the better plan is to sell Toro while his value is still clearly so high…(Hint: his value isnt high)
  12. Jim Bowden should be in the loop and has a history that strongly suggests he is in the loop. But I am not so sure he still is. He seems to have settled comfortably into his fantasy sports stuff…
  13. Toro went 6 for 39 from June 13 through June 27th with a .375 OPS in that stretch. That slump impacted his numbers…
  14. That’s hardly animosity. I have my issues with Cora, but this was just a weird observation about a leadoff hitter and a winning streak…
  15. Baseball is funny. For the last 5 games, Cora has filled out a lineup card that puts a hitter with a career .274 OBP in the leadoff spot. And the Soxare 4-0 in those games, and have a ten run lead in the seventh inning of the fifth. At this point, it’s just Streak Mentality aka Superstition…
  16. I never really saw how putting a bad fielder on the field justified his salary. Sure you can then squeeze another hitter into the DH slot, but whatever you get from those 4-5 PA per game can easily be offset by porous defense…
  17. Because Will Clark is a liar and a cheater and a naughty, naughty boy!!
  18. But all our expensive players were infielders and DHs…
  19. His BABIP of .321 is quite a bit ahead of his career mark of .253. There is a reason he’s on his fifth team in the last 5 years. Hes been great so far, but counting on him might be a bit foolish if the Sox hope to make a run…
  20. I view Campbell’s as Plan A at 1b if they go into Sell Mode. I doubt they rely solely on the in-house options at 1b now that there are no more August waiver trades if things don’t work out or if someone gets hurt. Certainly catcher depth is a concern, I just think it’s the #3 concern. Of course simply getting a backup catcher is among the easiest midseason deals to make. They might even get two, if one is optionable. But is trotting Connor Wong out there every fifth day really worse than 1b could be once Toro reverts to the norm?
  21. I’m honestly not in agreement with the whole “overpaid to be a DH” aspect. Devers was signed in accordance with his offensive skill set at 3b. That salary doesn’t affect my opinion as his roles change over time. And it’s far from the worst allocation of money we’ve all seen. I hate losing the bat, but I don’t mind seeing the whiny “me first” attitude hit the road. I think they did ok on the return. Time will tell, but most teams seem to fair poorly when dealing superstars for multiple prospects. Certainly there have been some success stories (most recently the Nats). My biggest fear was the acquisition of Hicks. Was he only included for money? Or as a replacement for Chapman as there is no next man out the door?
  22. But even then, the original question was where backup catcher ranked among needs. If they get one, no one other than Connor Wong will complain. But is bullpen or 1b a higher priority?
  23. Obviously. But I also doubt they have any reason to value Mullins over Tolle. Especially since if they make Ryan available, the Sox are not going to be the only team they talk to. And that substitution could easily be a deal breaker. Of course this is all well beyond hypothetical, as there is no reason to believe Ryan has even been discussed as trade bait…
  24. Hoskins went on the IL. Grade 2 left thumb sprain. Hes expected to miss at least a month…
  25. His defense - which has really ever been his only game - is worse than Wong’s?
