Not stupidity. Free agents are largely signed for PR purposes. There’s no way I know these players are declining but GMs don’t. Opt outs clear out the PR moves from the past earlier than was necessary at the time...

Well, yes and no. Obviously the player only opts out if he thinks he can get more money, which only happens if he is doing well. But unless the player is under 30, he probably is going to see at least the start of a decline in production, and see it very soon. So while teams will see players walk away with very little compensation (qualifying offers can be extended to players who opt out), the real bonus for the team is the extremely likely scenario of a player simply walking away before he becomes an albatross...

The drop off might be greater, but there are still good outfielders available. Rank the following 4 SP/RF combos: 1. Betts and Andrew Cashner 2. Betts and Jason Vargas (or any available SP you like better) 3. Yasiel Puig and Price 4. Domingo Santana and Price I can see the argument that, given the rest of the Sox team, the last two make for a better overall team. Yes Crazy Puig/ Santana / whoever in RF is a bigger drop off, but the Sox still have Bogaerts, Devers, Martinez, and Benintendi. Those are 4 pretty good anchors...

I wanted Price to opt out. I just knew he wouldn’t after barely pitching in 2017. Even if, for some reason, he wanted to opt out just to get out of Boston or his wife insisted he opt out or he just felt lucky, his agent would have locked him in a closet until after the deadline anyway. But I still wanted I’m to. He was not going to get any better but he was going to get older...

So with all the questionable pitchers on this team and the actual depth in the lineup, to me, nothing screams WHITE FLAG for the 2020 season than keeping Betts. And not only for 2020, but possibly 2021 and 2022 as well. This team has needs and can afford to part with a hitter. Trading the most expensive one to fill some holes with quality and reset the finances makes the most sense long and short term...

The Sox have only spent about $10mill this entire offseason, which shows us that the spending is limited. Bloom has added a few nondescript arms like Hall, Springs, Mazda, and Brice. I’d like to see an MLB arm or two get in there as well. Also, this team should DFA every player named Ryan...

Holt, Nunez, Pearce and Kinsler have been replaced by Chavis, Lin, Peraza and another TBD (or Arauz if he hangs on). The Sox will have some bench flexibility this year...

The Sox biggest need is MLB-ready arms. Even bullpen arms. Barnes was very good unless he pitched consecutive days, then he was a Little League BP hurler. He can’t be the “go to” guy again if he can’t pitch 2 days in a row...

I don’t think the lineup matter much on 2018 vs 2019. In fact, the 2019 Red Sox outscored the 2018 team 901 to 876. Even if you took Betts off that team, it’s still a good lineup. The rotation, OTOH, has a bit much going on with injuries, ineffectiveness, and a complete lack of depth. The bullpen has some good pitchers, but could use improvement as well. Especially since having no starter depth exploded their workload...

1. Well, it’s not Verdugo yet. 2. Safe bet if it is, Bloom will have more information about Verdugo’s back than a singular 4 week old news story. 3. If the Sox can’t reset, zero chance of Betts returning anyway, so any sort of jump at 2021 makes sense. The farm ain’t giving us the next Mookie any time soon...
