  1. Still that draft had 3 Hall of Famers in the top 30 picks. Ironic, because the first pick that year (Danny Goodwin) might have been the biggest bust in draft history...
  2. Well, you can only trade him to a team that makes an offer. Did anyone else make one? If Mookie was as deadset on testing the market as we all thought, the destination did not matter...
  3. Per Soxprospects.com, the current Red Sox 40 man roster has 39 players on it, and 21 were in the organization prior to Bloom's hire. He has added 18 players to the 40 man roster. The bulk of his adds have been borderline pitchers (Mazza, Springs, Hall, Leyer, Kickham, Stock, Triggs, Covey, Valdez, Godley, Brice ) and utility infielders (Arauz, Munoz, Peraza). The remaining adds have been 2 SPs (Perez, Pivetta), a starting outfielder (Verdugo), and a backup catcher (Plawecki)...
  4. The Sox could have drafted him, but they chose Jim Rice instead....
  5. Of course, that was hitters only...
  6. I looked at the highest seasons by fWAR for a player in the past 50 years. Surprisingly, only 4 of the top 10 made the postseason....
  7. The Red Sox should sign Taijuan Walker. He should be injured by the time Sale returns, creating an opening in the rotation...
  8. Relief pitchers. Keone Kela, Liam Hendricks, Chris Devenski, Alex Colome, Brad Peacock, Tyler Clippatd, and Dellin Betances. And those are just the righties!
  9. Yes those were very key deals for the White Sox. But neither Quintana (free agent after being released by the Yankees) nor Eaton (acquired in trade with Diamondbacks) would qualify as homegrown players for the White Sox. One theory has it that Sale’s tantrums over the Adam LaRoche situation prompted all three trades. (Eaton was very vocal as well.)
  10. I believe Sale was the only homegrown player dealt for prospects
  11. Except for the fact that the only members of that team actually drafted by the White Sox are Tim Anderson, Aaron Bummer, Jace Fry, Adam Engel, Danny Mendick, and Carlis Rodon. And technically Gio Gonzalez was, but they traded him twice before he ever played for them...
  12. It’s like my grandmother used to say - never trust a Canadian. Of course, she also said a lot of stuff about little green Martian men stealing her false teeth, so take that into account...
  13. Shockingly, this team is a long way from setting the record. The Sox current staff ERA of 6.16 would only be the 4th worst in MLB history. The 1930 Phillies hold the record with a team ERA of 6.71. Second worst is the 1996 Tigers with a 6.38. This has been another episode of “Notin’s Believe It.... Or Not!! Whatever You Want! See If I f***ing Care!!”
  14. Jerry Sands was in the Punto trade. Jerry Downs was a 15th round pick of the Sox in 2015...
  15. I think it might be time to move Eovaldi into the bullpen, possibly as the closer. He just flat out lacks the durability to be a starter...
  16. No, but without extending him and with Sale out, it was the right decision. This was only re-enforced with ERod getting sick and Price opting out of the season...
  17. I've seen that happen before, the most glaring example being John Schuerholz having to trade Kevin Millwood because he offered arbitration to Greg Maddux. A long time ago, but he basically admitted it publicly with his "the economics of baseball stick" comment that tried to divert blame from a situation that was obviously his fault. With Mookie, I could actually see more of him holding out, and Dombrowski just saying "well f*** THAT" and going ahead and spending his allowance, and basically forgoing the chance of coming to an amicable agreement with Betts or seeing if his demands changed...
  18. I am ot rooting for them to lose, but I am expecting it nightly. Where they draft appears to be up for debte and the worst record might not be as advantageous in this regard as it would be in a normal season. And really, picking 1st vs, say 7th probably makes very little difference in this draft. Not like there is any sure thig waiting to be taken overall #1...
  19. Most of us knew this was going to be horrific from Day One. We took consolation in 1) fewer games of this monstrosity thanks to a pandemic-shortened season and 2) there might be some ancillary benefits down the road...
  20. Next season, we already hope to have back three new SPs with 0 IP in Boston this year in Rodriguez, Sale and Pivetta. That's a good start in fixing one of the biggest flaws on this team. Next up - a few decent relief pitchers. (Hopefully!)
  21. That is possible. But I think once those deals went down, it sealed Mookie's exit...
  22. My number one complaint about Bloom is his bizarre attempts to recoup a lot of these aging "never was" pitchers like Kickham, Mazza, Springs, Blair and Covey (and Ryan Weber to some extent). I can somewhat see the appeal of guys like Robert Stock and Caleb Simpson, who can both at least throw about 100mph, which is a rare skill even among MLB pitchers. But I don't see why we give shots to guys like Kickham, Mazza and Covey, who have failed repeatedly at this level, but get rid of pitchers like Travis Lakins who has had limited opportunities at best. And where is Tanner Houck? Or Connor Seabold? Why not give them a shot over Kickham?
  23. And where does that stop? Dombrowski wasm't the GM. He was the President who also took on repsonsibilities of the GM. In a normal hierarchy. the GM reports to the Team President, but DD took both those roles. Sure, Henry approved his money, but he also hired Dombrowski to make those decisions because he trusted him to some extent. I would imagine Dombrowski essentially pitched or sold or had some sort of presentation as to why these were necessary signings, and they simply dd not turn out that way. I suppose I could fault Henry for not seeing the flaws that were obvious, considering I posted the ones for Price and Eovaldi on this board at the time of the signing, and was correct on both counts. And I am hardly any sort of prophet. I viewed it as being akin to telling a man in the path of a tidal wave that he was going to get wet...
  24. THe bottom line is which arrangement is best defensively. Devers has shown to be very capable at 3B, but he also goes through periods of being error-prone. Dalbec is a good defender with a strong arm, but he is also the taller player who in theory should have the better stretch at 1B. I could see either alignment. But first, Dalbec has to hit enough to make this type of decision relevant...
  25. Agreed. No one wants the team to lose. The draft pick position doesn't bother me much, since there are rarely MLB slam dunk picks. But on the other hand, if we get a preview of Dalbec and maybe find a good 2B through trial and error, that could be a good thing going forward...
