You like to draw grades solely on the seasons these GMs were in charge with no thought into what the condition was of the team they inherited or left behind, like they are all running fantasy baseball teams in a re-draft league. Dombrowski does not win 3 titles without what he inherited from Cherington. He absolutely doesn't. And his spending habits absolutely did leave the team in the shape it is in today for Bloom to clean up. Both Bloom and Cherington inherited messy teams and were not allowed to spend any money, unlike Dombrowski. For someone who believes spending is the best way to win, why not take into consideration whether or not they were allowed to do so in the first place? I do try to take these factors into consideration when evaluating a GM, which is why I would score Dombrowski lower than you might and Cherington higher. I think it is an easier job for a GM when they have more resources. Bloom has to be given an INC grade so far because he really has not been allowed to do anything...

Because per your argument, Price had positive trade value despite his declining WAR and massive salary. If he had positive trade value, why not deal him separately...

It was not. Verdugo alone had more value than Betts at the time. Price had negative trade value comparable to that of Wil Myers at the time. And Myers was a guy the Sox were taking in trade rumors in order to up the prospect return..

In an era where Jackie Bradley costs $11mill and Kevin Kiermaier has a 6 year $53.5 mill contract, what is your definition of cheap as it applies to Tolan? Bench also had 4 Gold Gloves and an MVP under his belt prior to 1972 (when he got his 5th Gold Glove and 2nd MVP). Comparable recent catchers might be Posey or Mauer, neither of whom were/are cheap...

And looking at Johnny Bench. He lead the NL in fWAR in 1972. But teammates Joe Morgan (2nd) and Pete Rose (8th) were among the league leaders as well. Not to mention Tony Perez (26th) and Bobby Tolan (27th) had great seasons. Can teams afford to pay what those veterans would cost today? Five of the 27 best position players? The 1972 Reds, interestingly, had only one pitcher (Jack Billingham) in the top 50 in fWAR, and he was number 50...

No!! I can handle corporate naming on stadiums, but please no on teams. I hated that Disney named their teams the Mighty Ducks, and that's not even a true corporate name. Maybe one day teams won't even be identified by their cities, but by their owning corporations (like they do with Japanese baseball). So we could have the Nintendo Mariners playing the Liberty Media Braves? Uggh...

Something I have always believed, too. But.... History has shown those contracts do get traded. Stanton, A-Rod, Cano, Price, Fielder, Verlander, Greinke, Kemp, Manny Ramirez. These were all among the largest contracts in the game when signed, and all of them were traded mid-contract. And I bet I forgot about one or two names. Of course, most of thir deals have been eclisped in the past 3 years by Trout, Machado, Harper, Rendon, Cole, etc. But I would imagine some of those deals will get dealt as well. (Machado will get traded. Book it.) So.. will Mookie play all 12 years in Dodger Blue? I wouldn't bank on it just yet....

Had? Sad. Well, they had them both when the entire league only had 8 teams in it. That should have been their motto "The CFL. Eight teams. Two Rough Riders. Watch it!" Also one could argue Red Sox/White Sox are similarly named and no one cares...

I don't see that as an issue. The Canadian Football League has two teams named Rough Riders and no one has ever complained.

Ah, hindsight. The best criteria for a decision. Of course, the sox could have trade him to, say, Cleveland and saw Mookie test the market. At which point, the Dodgers would certainly have interest (unless you think they committed $365 million on a whim), so the Sox still would have had serious competition re-signing him. Maybe we could have forced the Dodgers to pay more? Maybe Mookie simply wanted a change of scenery or to be out of Boston? It looks like that no matter the outcome, getting Verdugo might actually be the absolute best case scenario for the Sox...

Interestingly, Fangraphs listed Bonds as having 4 of the top ten seasons in fWAR, but he only made the postseason in one (2002) of those 4 seasons. Of course, if you go back before 2002 (I think) for fWAR, the numbers are calculated a bit differently because of the lack of the same type of defensive data. And if you go back before the 1990's, it does mess with your entire premise because teams were a bit more balanced economically. Johnny Bench and Willie Stargell did not monopolize a payroll the way Betts can...

He was drafted number 1 overall 4 years later (after college), making him the only player ever drafted number 1 overall twice. He did make MLB, but only posted a .674 OPS in 707 PA's over 7 seasons....
