So you're saying a 3 game round makes this title more difficult than the teams that faced single-game elimination when one hit, one play, one bad throw or one error can end the season? Which is exactly what happened to Milwaukee last year when the beneficiary (Washington) went on to win it all...

Like with any other free agent, it probably depends on the money. And maybe he wants to challenge of making Detroit relevant again. That team is loaded with some young talented pitching, and he might want to lead any potential charge up through the standings. Also, any opportunity in the AL Central will have at least some appeal to a managerial candidate due to the lack of any large market team that can spend its way to the top and sustain their success through financial means...

The whole season was "early in the season". Still it's more a point about what percentage of the Sox IP this year were handled by AAAA-type pitching. If you count Godley and Brewer as AAAA pitchers, which they should be, over 45% of the IP for the Sox this year were handled by pitchers who were, at best, borderline MLB talent. (And that is not counting the 43 IP from Ryan Weber.) Godley certainly has had a couple good seasons. But those are in the rear view mirror and he was cut by Detroit prior to signing with Boston...

I'm not even sure this is any more true now than it ever was before. Players have always hated managers, and there have been repercussions. Billy Martin's feuds with Reggie Jackson were legendary, and reportedly lead to his dismissal at least once. Bobby Valentine was notorious for clashing with players across multiple leagues. The Sox did stick by Zimmer and unload the players he had trouble with (Bill Lee and Jim Willoughby for example), but that actually turned out to be the wrong move in hindsight. Of course, the lack of 24 hour channels dedicated to sports and even solely to MLB might have made stories like these a lot less common...

Exactly. I don't mind bringing in as many AAAA guys as they can fit in Pawtucket. But the whole idea is to still only need them for depth. But the AAAA crowd accounted for 183 IP out of the 524 IP (35%!!) for the team this year. A number that goes up if you consider Zack Godley (28.2 IP) and Colten Brewer (25 IP) to be AAAA pitchers as well, which you probably should. Really, the fact that Ryan Weber was third on this team in IP and pitchers like Andrew Triggs and Matt Hall logged more IP than Brandon Workman also speaks volumes...

Therein lies the dilemma. Valdez had the best season, but it looks less sustainable. Of course, as dilemmas go, this is pretty low risk. The Sox could DFA all of the AAAA guys and bring in an equal number of brand new ones and there might be no change in either direction from the old crowd to the new one...

I'm not even as high on Springs and Valdez as you. I prefer Covey and Stock over both. But really, it's all guess work on whom Bloom prefers...

The biggest issue with Vadez to me is that his FIP shows his ERA might be a bit of an illusion, and he was worse with FIP than Mazza, Covey and Stock. He might not be the slam dunk he appears to be upfront...

The biggest obstacle with Cora is more likely to be that he will could other offers, whereas some of the other candidates like Kotsay and Quatraro might not garner as much league-wide interest...

That’s fine. Brice was really the only obvious question mark on his prediction. And even if they do non-tender him, it does very little to impact the overall picture he’s painting...

I could see that, as they have 10-12 players where the 40 man roster spot is more valuable than the player. Some of the non-tendered crowd could potentially be brought back on MiLB deals. None of them figure to garner significant interest around the league...

World Series or not, whoever signs Bauer is going to hate his deal at some point. Just like you Yankee fans will with Cole and did with ARod. But free agency isn’t about titles and timing. It’s about PR and ticket sales (normally). The “timing is right” on Bauer or anyone similar when 1) he’s available and 2) you can afford him. End of story. I don’t care if they pass personally...

An embellished story. Gibson started the inning and loaded the bases himself and was charged with 5 ER in 1 IP. He did give up a grand slam to Pete LaCock that inning. I’ll assume the Old Timers day story is true...

Not necessarily. If you want an ace pitcher, you get one when one is available. Not all free agents are signed solely because a title is within reach...

Cora was banned for a year in April of 2020. Does that mean he cannot be hired anywhere until April of 2021?

But there i a difference between accepting that cheating is widespread and overtly condoning the activity by hiring a known offender. But baseball fans are very fickle when it comes to cheating. With steroids? Suspicion is enough!! But throw a few spitballs? OK. Admit throwing spitters? That's ok too. tThrow tons of spitballs and admit it and win 300 games, get elected to the Hall of Fame and go on to write an autobioghraphy where you not only admit you used the spitball in the title of the book, but you give it top billing over yourself? Yea, fans are cool with that...
