  1. Only manager in history to manage a World Series champion and an Olympic Gold Medal team....
  2. I think we got that. But even taking the Vegas betting situation into account, the individual game betting lines are not like NFL or NBA lines with odds or point spreads on a team. The most common lines are payoff lines that represent winnings on a $100 bet or the quantity you need to bet to win $100, and are heavily (re: solely?) based on starting pitchers, not on teams...
  3. I know what he meant, but I agree it isn’t the same. But the playoffs also don’t typically involve “bad teams.” In MLB, they’re usually a bunch of teams that won between 55% and 62% of their games and thinking that 7% advantage represents any sort of significant difference in a stretch of 3 to 19 games...
  4. Taillon might never be an ace, and certainly never a reliable one. He’s an upgrade. A serious one with a great pedigree (drafted in between Bryce Harper and Manny Machado) and some MLB success. Per BTV, a fair trade is Taillon and Polanco for Groome and another, like Brayan Bello. But there are some options. But the points are: 1. Should the Sox take on Polanco? He was an exit velocity monster last season, but even more of a swing and miss monster. Also, I would not trust him in CF. 2. Would you trade Groome for Taillon? Both have strong similarities, like top tier talent and severe struggles staying on the mound...
  5. No, but we all know it’s not “Cashman’s track record” that turns players like these around, is it now?
  6. I’d rather trade for an ace and get them before their prime years, rather than use free agency to pay a pitcher in his 30s for the career he had in his 20s. But trading for an ace does require a farm system. But I liked the Sale trade a lot more than the Price signing...
  7. I did not like Price for a 7 year $200+ mill contract, and Bauer is not as good as Price was at the time...
  8. I was expecting some deeply insightful plan like “just sign Bauer, Springer and Yates and then trade for Jose Ramirez. See how easy it is” type thing presented like it was not only obvious, but also easily affordable. His acquisitions were probably a bit much, but not out of reach...
  9. I thought this guy's plan was going to be stupid (because I found the link on Trevor Bauer's B-R page), but it's much more reasonable that I expected. https://www.overtimeheroics.net/2021/01/08/2021-red-sox-predictions/
  10. RIP Willie Mays is now the oldest living member of the Hall of Fame...
  11. I didn't think he was candid at all. His reasoning sounded more political. The reason he was unable to get Snell was the Sox simply had no way of matching the offer the Padres gave. And even trying would have done nothing except maybe get the Padres to up their offer. It's not like Snell's contract - which Bloom probably wrote for a small market team - was all that daunting, and it's not like Bloom has no knowledge of prospect attrition rates. The Sox were going to be outbid by a team that simply had a much greater abundance of players to deal from. End of reason.
  12. Exactly. The notion that they won’t go big because they don’t think they can compete this year is folly. You have to get the player(s) you want when they’re available. And unless you only sign them to 1 year deals, they’ll be around for 2021 as well...
  13. Of course I’m now reading the Mets have maybe $15mill left in the budget, which, along with the acquisition of Carrasco, probably means they won’t move on Bauer. Which of course leaves the question “OK, so who does?”
  14. He did? Fangraphs had 0.9 fWAR for Montgomery and 0.9 fWAR for Eovaldi. Why is Montgomery's 0.9 better? (B-R gives Eovaldi 1.3 bWAR and Montgomery 0.1 bWAR. Much, much bigger gap.) Eovaldi's career fWAR is 12.9 and Montgomery's is 4.0 So... not sure how Montgomery has the higher career WAR either. Unless you meant he has the higher career high fWAR. In which case, still wrong, as Eovaldi's is 3.3 vs Montgomery's best of 2.6. You are correct that Montgomery 2 years and 10 months younger. So, one right, I guess. But that is a pretty small gap considering he has 730 less IP. He is NOT making that total up in 3 years...
  15. I think he already made one. That said, they are still probably the most likely landing spot for Bauer...
  16. Yes. Also, markedly improve the team....
  17. But that "suspect" Braves team has a very young and extremely solid core both on the mound (Soroka, Fried, Anderson) and in the field (Acuna, Albies, Freeman). And they have more farm depth to supplement it, either through direct promotion or through trades. A deal like this was the Mets' best shot to be taken seriously, but any claim they have to the top of the NL East is tenuous at best...
  18. Yes you can get owner salaries, but you also ave no say in the player's deal. You take on whatever years he has left, for example. As well as any bonuses, NTC, etc. Free agency is generally more expensive but also allows the team some say in the terms...
  19. So how long until some blogger on Fansided asks why Bloom was asleep at the wheel and did not acquire Lindor either?
  20. Not really. Prospect capital represents potential major leaguers at minimum wage, and trading them typically involves taking on higher salaries. Free agents? Trading prospects? In both cases, you're going to be spending more money...
  21. It was a snarky way of saying "no one is doing anything". It's January 7th, and so far the biggest free agent contract has gone to James McCann. ...
  22. By moving the top tier players to the other league, teams can benefit from the return they get and not have to compete with the star's new team for postseason spots. Cleveland is still a good team and even with Carrasco (and Clevinger) gone, they still might have the best rotation in the American League...
  23. Carrasco's deal (2 yrs/$27mill) was favorable, but his health was not. He was diagnosed with leukemia a couple years ago. But the Tribe has dealt Clevinger and now Carrasco in the last 4 months, and still has Bieber, Aaron Civale, Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, and Zac Plesac for the rotation...
  24. The "useless" BTV site was pretty accurate with this deal... https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades/trade-36124/
  25. SS Amed Rosario, SS/2B Andres Gimenez, OF Isaiah Greene, and RHP Joe Wolf headed to Cleveland...
