  1. As a free agent? If he opts out of a one year $19.35mill, it won't be to accept a one year $17mill. Maybe a 2 year $34mill. I could see that. I haven't seen anyone mention this, but one reason he might not opt out is that if he does, the Sox might extend a Qualifying Offer (should they still exist), which will make him a less attractive free agent. If that happens, opting out might position him to take the one year offer for less than his current guarantee. Now, if he was a 27yo Bryce Harper hitting the market, no one cares about the QO. But for a 37yo DH? It's very possible some teams do...
  2. Does he? Seen him pitch lately?
  3. He might opt out just to force the extension issue. (OK, technically, it would not be an extension at that point.) But yes, just because he opts out doesn't necessarily mean he's gone...
  4. Does Shaw bring anything? Right now, with Taylor and Darwinzon out, the only lefty in the Sox pen is Austin Davis. I would think Alex Claudio or Steve Gonsalves would be a bigger need. Especially now that the Yankees have Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo in the lineup..
  5. With JD, it might come down to whether or not he think he prioritizes years over money. More money is great, but at his age, years under contract also has to be a consideration. If he thinks he can get 3 or 4 years, then he might opt out. It will be easier to get that deal this year over next year...
  6. Giancarlo Stanton
  7. One thing I didn’t realize is this year, the minor league seasons run through September, which means if Duran or Cordero aren’t going to play, sending them down at least means they can still get some baseball in…
  8. .. which is why “small sample sizes” exist…
  9. Actually if the Sox operated like the Rays, Duran would have been signed to a 5 year extension by now…
  10. Dalbec also had a 1.343 OPS in 5 games vs Tampa and Toronto, which shouldn’t be considered minor league staffs…
  11. Not. At Houck’s age, Sale had 3 top 6 Cy Young finishes. Houck’s career to date is 47 IP. He deserves to be in the rotation today, but any comp to Sale is way premature
  12. Manny was 27 when the Sox signed him. It made sense. Price was 31. The Sox had to hope it worked out and they won enough in the first 3 or 4 years to make the last seasons when that deal was dragging the team down more palatable…
  13. Cordero might be a career 4th outfielder, but I still doubt they DFA him after 135 PA…
  14. Santana hasn’t played at all in August
  15. There are ALWAYS exceptions. As much as I think those massive contracts are a bigger detriment than boon, there are always players the Sox just should go in on. Of course if the re-instate the “no pitchers/players over 30” guideline, about 90% of them all drop from consideration anyway…
  16. Eovaldi?
  17. Think she’ll DFD him?
  18. Well his first year he’s wasn’t allowed to spend. That’s why Scutaro was traded - to free up cash. And reportedly there was some edict about signing free agent pitchers over 30…
  19. Ok. I can agree with that viewpoint…
  20. And I’m sure Mrs. Santana also has some feelings, but it doesn’t change the fact that his days are numbered…
  21. I would have DFAd Santana and demoted Cordero…
  22. Sure. He can be DFAd, traded, or released. He just can’t be loved. (Of course it wouldn’t open up a spot on the active roster.)
  23. Yes they are. And I greatly prefer leverage situations over postseason numbers for a slew of reasons. I brought up other simple questions..
  24. For example, David Ortiz had twice as many sac flies in high leverage situations as he had in low leverage ones, despite having only half the PA. Where do these show up in your data? And are sac flies “clutch”?
