  1. The only one of those who was highly touted and didn’t pan out was Swihart. Lavarnway was actually ranked by some of the orgs, but no one ever seemed to think he’d stick at catcher and his rankings were more for his bat. Saltalamacchia was a BA ranked prospect, but he did have a 12 year MLB career. I can call that “panning out.” Kottaras was never a highly regarded prospect by anyone except maybe his own mom. You could have at least shown some love for former Sox top prospect and Peabody native Steve Lomasney...,
  2. It’s very possible Bloom knows what he’s doing. After three games, everyone wrote off the season and Bloom. If anyone had said at that point “Don’t sweat it. By early June this team will have the second best record in the AL and be 4.5 games up on the Yankees,” safe bet all reactions to that statement would not have been in agreement with it...
  3. Maybe they lost some faith in Benintendi? He’d been a below average since 2018, and while still young, really just had the one good season. But hindsight moves like that where multiple transactions need to get rearranged make for weak arguments...
  4. It’s very possible none of the players makes the majors or makes any impact. But what if the Sox traded Benintendi for Sawamura and Gonzalez? Since they basically spent his salary on those two...
  5. I think there’s often more logic than we realize...
  6. Obviously, Liam Hendricks. Worth noting that Hendricks also had twice the career fWAR as Barnes. Maybe the “recency bias” is more a coincidence and Hendricks got that deal because he’s actually a really good relief pitcher and a team did their homework. Alex Colome had career numbers more similar to Barnes and struggled to land a deal. No Recency Bias there?
  7. And some fans think remembering there will be another season is tantamount to surrendering. Also, f*** the boys down at Clancy’s. How come they’re always out drinking and never at home? Maybe a few of them need to stop using baseball talk as an excuse to advance their cirrhosis and take in some much needed AA meetings...
  8. Why are the only two options: 1. Trade Barnes? 2. Make Barnes the highest paid relief pitcher in MLB history? I don’t think 30 year old Matt Barnes is going to break salary records based on two months...
  9. What if some sort of Stanek/Nick Anderson trade falls into Bloom’s lap? It’s hard to predict a realistic trade for Barnes, typically because if the Sox need a starter, most teams looking to acquire Barnes won’t be trading a starter...
  10. They got Nick Anderson and Trevor Richards. They also gave up top prospect OF Jesus Sanchez...
  11. If Xander keeps this up, he’s opting out. If you were his agent, you wouldn’t advise him to? But that’s all after next year, I believe. If his opt out was this year, I wander if he would amidst the great shortstop free agent class of 2021. There would be reasons to and reasons not to...
  12. Minimum wage plus MLB experience? He’ll probably get claimed...
  13. At some point, being the Best Defensive Red Sox Left Fielder Since Yaz is an honor akin to having the fastest Ford Fiesta in your town...
  14. But then in 2019 and 2020 combined, the Red Sox spent a total of 10 days being 10 games over .500. The 2021 Red Sox have already had 9...
  15. ... better roids...
  16. And it never did...
  17. You might be right. I used some service time rule I found and counted backwards to get a date. If it’s today (technically tomorrow), that expedites when Duran can be called up, but they still might wait. One way to know for certain is to see when the Rays call up Wander Franco. They will do that the day after the Super Two deadline...
  18. I also assume at some point they get to talk to the agents of potential draftees...
  19. Like it or not, I'd be surprised if Duran gets added to the 40 man roster until at a minimum, the Super Two deadline passes. Not sure when this is, but Duran would need at least 86 days of service time, which would put his call up just after July 10, and has to be in the top 22% for total service of all eligible players. So if the Sox are as high on Duran as many of you are, unless there is a glut of upcoming rookies, I would suspect we wait at least 5 more weeks. And given how little actual quality minor league time he has above A Ball, it's hard to argue that is service time manipulation...
  20. I didn’t find it underwhelming, but it certainly wasn’t overwhelming. I guess it’s best described as simply “whelming”...
  21. Apparently my prediction of JT Ginn is extremely unlikely, as Ginn had TJ surgery this off-season. Shame, because after I made it, Fangraphs ranked Lee and Ginn right next to each other with the same Future Value, so it looked like a good swap. With Ginn obviously off the table, maybe one of the high upside 3b prospects like Mark Vientos or Brett Baty is more likely...
  22. A feeling that was greatly exacerbated by the first 3 games of the season...
  23. MLB.com's latest mock draft has the Sox taking Davis while passing on Rocker. But they also cite that the Sox might cut a deal with a lesser player at 4 in order to save some cash for later picks, presumably those who fall for signability reasons...
  24. In fact, MLB has also never had a player whose last name was the same as the city he played for. Maybe if Daryl Boston had played for the Red Sox or Reggie Cleveland had pitched for the Guardians, then at least one player could have had the same name on both sides of the road jersey. Now, the Cleveland Naps do sort of fall into the "Browns" category in that they were named after a player. But they went with the abbreviated first name...
