    September call-ups don’t work the way they used to. Teams used to be able to call up their entire 40 man roster if they wanted to. Some teams called up a couple players, some called up 10 or more. That is no longer the case. Starting September 1, every team must maintain a 28 man roster with a max of 14 pitchers. Those extra 2 players can be swapped with other minor league guys over the course of the month, but you no longer have endless options on the bench or in the pen. If you want to give a bunch of rookie playing time to show what they’ve got, you have to do what the Angels did and DFA multiple veterans.

    Next year is (supposedly) the last year of Bloom's contract. He either needs to be: 1) extended now (or soon after the season) or 2) fired now (or soon after the season) You can't have him running the team as a lame duck He could do serious short and long-term damage in that status. I'm prefer option 2.

    I was listening to a Sox podcast earlier. They were discussing Bloom and ownership; one of the hosts mentioned that Liverpool fans are having issues with what Fenway Sports Group is doing in regards to spending on that team. You are correct; none of us has any idea what Henry's thinking/vision/goals are. (no pun intended on goals)

    Got to remember the roster expands to 28 on Friday. No more, no less. You can move guys up and down, but I believe you are still subject to the 10 day minimum rule if somebody is sent down. Bringing players up to see what they’ve got isn’t so easy anymore.

    The Red Sox always do well the first 18 years of a century. Let’s just hope they don’t repeat 1919-1937, when they were mediocre a few times snd downright terrible the rest (2 seasons with winning records, 1 at .500 and a lot in the .300s)

    Bush needs to be the first one fired. I can’t think of anyone who has actually improved under his 4 year tutelage. Quite frankly, in looking at his background, I’m not sure why he was qualified to be a major league pitching coach in the first place.

    If he’s knocked out, how does he stay in to die? Knocked out means he’s not in the game anymore. If you meant knocked around, the answer no. A Baraclough is one thing. They aren’t going to mess around with a Bello. Some low level bullpen guy will do the honors. My guess is Jacques, who is back up in place of Baraclough.

    Way too many pitches. Bello has to figure out a way to put guys away a lot earlier. Doesn’t have to be a K, but he can’t take 8-9 pitches to get a ground out.

    Re. Kike, if they didn’t resign him, do they get Turner and Martin? It’s an unknown what if any role Kike played in their “recruitment”.

    Day of rest? You are aware Raffy got hit on the wrist in the 8th yesterday and is having X-rays taken. Let’s hope that today and maybe tomorrow are the only days he misses.

    So far as I can tell, Mookie has never mentioned specific numbers. He very carefully said the Red Sox didn’t make that offer. If it was $295M for 10 years or $300M for 11 years, he would be telling the truth. I’m usually on the players side on these things, but I think Mookie is being coy here. He was determined to go to free agency and he did. I don’t think he was going to accept any offer before that happened.

    Those teams have come at the expense of rec ball and Little League though. When my sons were involved 20-25 years ago, every school in our town had a grade based team and sometimes 2. Those are gone. The local Little League had American and National charters with 6 teams each. The town next to used to have 3 Little Leagues. These are towns of 35000-45000 people. Now, our Little League is down to one charter. The neighboring town ended up having to merge with another league just to have enough kids for 4 teams between them. Other town’s Little Leagues are just gone period. Kids who want to play have to go travel ball or they just don’t play. For the kid who wants to do nothing else, travel teams are fine. The kid who just wants to play for fun has nothing. Seems to me that it’s a mixed bag.

    He only played in 20 games for Milwaukee this year; anyone can have a bad 20 games. He hit 23 homers for the Brew Crew in 2021 and followed that up with 16 last year. He’s never going yo be a high average hitter, but he’s better than the .150 whatever it was in Milwaukee this season.

    Need some length out of Bello today. Pen is in tough shape today; Martin and Jansen aren’t available. Pivetta is ptobsbly slated for either the start or the bill man tomorrow.

    I just watched it again. It really looked like Wong ran into the hitter on purpose. He never moved towards the ball. He never even looked at it. The hitter knew he had fouled it back and moved into fair territory. Wong went out and ran into him. In the NFL, Wong would have been flagged for either clipping or a block below the waist.

    I saw that too. OTOH, if you’re going to mess up outs, better to take the under.
