    Scorers only want to piss off one guy. An error gets both the hitter and the fielder mad; a hit only gets the pitcher upset. Radio guys have been calling out scorers all year. They’ve said multiple times that scorers have been told to err (no pun intended) on the side of offensive stats.

    To be fair, Casas doesn’t strike me as a player who wears his emotions on his sleeve.

    Bello didn’t have it; it happens to even the best pitchers. One could question his pitch mix early. IMO, he let his emotions get to him. How often do you see great pitchers give up a couple runs in the first or second, then settle down and give up nothing more. Bello never settled down. Worse though was the A’s tried to give them the game and the Sox failed to take it. Raffy’s injury didn’t help this series either. He was so hot in Chicago and we all know what a streaky guy he can be.

    Yep. I’ve said it many times. Any pitcher in the major leagues can shut down any team. It’s how often they can do that that separates them. And as Splinter said above, Medina’s stuff is better than his stats.

    I know that. Point is you can’t tell squat about a guy over his first few weeks in the majors. Jacques is likely going to be a backend of the pen guy at best. He’s done the job most of the time this year but when he gives up runs, he gives them up in bunches. This game is on the offense and the A’s pitchers have had a bit to do with that. It happens.

    Near as I can tell, he also tied the consecutive strikeout record by any pitcher that was set by Roger Clemens in his first 20 strikeout game. Multiple Sox pitchers combined to strike out 11 straight Rays a few years ago.

    Relatively cheaply as well (around $2M IIRC).

    He's not that young; he'll be 27 in September. I do agree Verdugo may be the one to go if they decide to be sellers. He will get you the most bang for the buck. The issue is, he likes Boston, and those guys are often hard to find.

    Refsnyder is fine for the role he plays, back up outfielder. Who fills that role if he's traded? The guys in the minors need to play every day, not sit on the bench in Boston.

    My concern for Houck is between the ears. We've both been around long enough to know that some guys come back okay after such an injury, others do not. The results are definitely mixed.

    Don’t know; I don’t have MLB TV anymore, and even if I did, I’m blacked out of Cubs games here. They were just wondering after he took two strikes that they said he normally would take a cut at.

    When it comes to Wrigley, when the wind is blowing towards Lake Michigan, it’s the best hitters park there is. When it’s coming off of the lake, it’s a great pitchers park.

    Thing is, when an ump is calling a good game, no one notices. When there are no out of line calls, you just watch the game without distraction.

    Well I can tell you there’s a front headed that way. Went through here (~160 miles west) about 3 hours ago. We got about 1.25 inches of rain in about an hour and some very strong winds. Looks like it’s reaching the Western Chicago suburbs now.

    Probably both, depending on those teams schedules. I’d imagine they will minimize road trips for him.

    Bello has definitely seen far to many in his year in the majors. His stuff is going to induce a lot of ground balls; he needs plays to be made behind him.

    You forgot Junichi Tazawa, who was pretty good against everyone except the Blue Jays. I used to think the Sox would have been better off leaving him south of the border when they went to Toronto. That team owned him.

    Sean McDonough just summed Oakland up perfectly: they are playing the kind of baseball of a 25 win team. To be fair, the A’s did recently have a 7 game win streak and had won their last 2 series, so they’ve been playing better than they are early this year. In fact, they’ve almost caught Kansas City in the race to avoid the worst record in MLB.
