    Yep. And even if you take away Rice's last 2 years as primarily a DH, you still had HOF left fielders for 42 of 49 seasons, with only 2 of those 7 being due to decisions the Red Sox made (the Harper years).

    Sort of. Williams was gone for three years during WWII and then for basically 2 more during the Korean War. But it could be argued he would have been out there for those seasons under more peaceful circumstances. Yaz moved to 1B when the Sox got Tommy Harper, who played left for a couple years just before Jim Rice arrived in 1975. IIRC, Rice DH’d his last couple years and Greenwell was in left.

    A little misleading. If the Sox sold out every game, they could be no better than 7th. But even percentagewise, they are only pulling at just over 80% capacity, which is definitely way down from the 2010s.

    Bases loaded nobody out you try and get out of the inning minimizing the damage. Turning 2 is the correct play there. In 20-20 hindsight, it saved 2 runs. Get one out at the plate at the plate and the homer isn't a 2-run shot, it's a grand slam.

    That's pure 20-20 hindsight. Was Cora supposed to just know that Crawford wouldn't have it tonight?

    I don't criticize managerial moves after the fact. If I don't like something, I say it as it happens. Also, you could at least bitch about the proper pitcher who allowed the game to get completely away; the guy who was in in the 7th. Garza allowed 1 run in the 5th. Score goes to 2-0. He should have been out of the 6th inning on the DP grounder that Kike threw away, allowing a 3rd run to score and extending the inning (and despite that leading to guys on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, he got out of that inning without allowing the 4th run to score).

    That could be correct, but I know the radio guys used the word hopefully. That doesn't translate to just an extra day off.

    Well said. To paraphrase Maj. Charles Winchester from M*A*S*H, Old Red does indeed possess 20-20 hindsight. As I said earlier in the thread, Red's criticism's would be a lot more impressive if he made them in real time instead of seeing what the results are first.

    Do we know Winck was available? Not saying he was or wasn't, but managers tend to hold such info close, if for no other reason than to make the other manager think.

    I don't think he was. First, Lively is a rightly. I doubt Cora sits him against a righty. Second, the radio guys said late in the game (maybe the 8th inning) that hopefully Verdugo would be back tomorrow night to help bolster the top of the line-up. That implies to me he was sick or dinged up. Wouldn't shock me to find out that he has what Sale and Devers had on the road trip.

    I’d be more impressed with calling for that move had you made it before the top of the 5th (i.e. in real time).

    Except the Reds change who they use out of the pen in a closer game. Can’t assume the game plays out the same.

    33 year old journeyman. He was up with the Sox a few weeks ago and got into a couple of games. I don’t think he allowed any runs but it was a MSS (microscopic sample size).

    I’d recommend a mandatory 8 am practice tomorrow morning. Everyone except tomorrow’s starting pitcher can be there.

    Agree 100%. Killer was Valdez and McGuire unable to make contact and get him to second.

    Yeah, but 1 run allowed is perfectly acceptable. Would prefer he’d have gone 5 or 6 but allowed 3 bombs? I think it was Mike Mussina who said you get 32 starts a year. 8 of them you have everything, 8 of them you have nothing and the other 16 you have something. This was a cross between the 8 with nothing and the 16 with something.

    4-5 trip to the West Coast is not a bad thing. There have been far worse results going back decades.

    Some on this site feel they must win every inning. If the Sox don’t, they get in here and complain.

    Radio guys are saying he’s been sick all week; given that, a really good outing for him and the team.

    No, it is not the mark of a bad team. Kansas City is on a pace to go 47-115. They are not even the worst team in MLB, the A's are on a pace to go 31-131. Those are bad teams. The Sox are average, not bad. We need to see what happens once Duvall and Story get back. They will probably finish 5-6 games over ,500 (absent massive injuries). It wouldn't shock me to see the whole division over .500.

    This series reminds me of one about 7 or 8 years ago at the Big A. Sox got swept in a 4 gamer right after the All-Star break and scored 4 runs total.
