    To be fair though, Schilling wouldn’t become the pitcher we remember for 4 or 5 years after that trade. He did nothing for Baltimore or Houston before landing with the Phils. Boddicker did pretty well for the Sox, going 39-22 with a 3.49 ERA in his 2 1/2 years in Boston and helped win 2 division titles.

    It’s more of a European thing I think. I noticed the same thing in Italy a few years ago.

    It does follow logically, but how often does a pitcher who goes 6 innings give up exactly 3 earned runs? I’m guessing a lot of the time, said pitcher is allowing 2 or even 1. Any game where he allows 4 earned runs isn’t a quality start and so wouldn’t be included in those calculations. I’ve referred before to a game I listened to in 1974 against the Angels. It illustrates the absurdity of the definition of a quality start. Nolan Ryan pitched 13 innings for California and allowed 3 runs. Quality start by any definition you could come up with. Luis Tiant allowed 4 runs, going the distance and pitching 14 1/3 innings. That’s not considered a quality start. The best that can be said about a quality start is that by allowing 3 earned runs or less over 6 innings, a starter has given his team a decent chance at a win.

    Forgot about that; that’s probably it. Tough part is the 10 day thing though.

    When you send a guy down, he has to stay 10 days unless there’s an injury. And it has to be pitcher for pitcher, position player for position player. Rule came in a couple years ago to stop some of the yo-yoing.

    No he wasn’t. Heineman was recalled for that. Campbell and Winckowski up, Booser and Keller down. Keller I get, Booser I don’t. He’s pitched decently

    With the K, both (and all future runs this inning) are unearned to the team. Devers compounds the inning.

    Saw an interesting video yesterday on how the box on tv is inaccurate. Side to side was fine, since it’s two fixed points. Up and down is terrible, especially on the upper part, because the zone is batter dependent but they never adjust it on television.

    He’s trying to hit everything 500 feet again. The way the ball is flying tonight isn’t going to help that mentality.

    Just saw that the Say Hey Kid died Tuesday at 93. Obviously, he is among the very small group of men who are in the conversation as the best all-around player ever. I was fortunate enough to see him play with the Mets in one of his final seasons.

    Interesting. Maybe that one game was very recently. I know Sogard is a utility type, so he could fill a role in that regard, and the ability to play another position (I saw he’s also played some OF as well) isn’t going to hurt him.

    Sogard being groomed? He’s played 1 game at 1st base in his entire minor league career.

    Kick the tires, sure. But the Psle Hose aren’t going to give him away. With Mookie out for a couple months, the Dodgers are in need of a ss; they can probably come up with a better offer.

    You’ve decided all that based on his whopping 18 games played this year? Or his success over his long 104 game major league career? I will give you he can catch the ball better than Dalbec. He probably hits better than Dalbec, though it would be interesting to compare their numbers through the same number of games and PAs in their careers; Dalbec looked halfway decent early on. What Romy apparently can’t do is stay on the field. He’s been on the DL for 3/4 of this season so far. He was on the DL for 3/4 of 2023 as well. A back up is of no use if he’s not available, and one thing you can say about Dalbec is he always seems to be available to play. I’m not saying Dalbec’s the guy, but counting on Gonzalez as a back up doesn’t seem wise either given his history. That Davis guy you mentioned earlier seems somewhat intriguing, but could he be Cooper II?

    There are a few reasons IMO: 1) He’s right handed; with the exception of Gonzalez, all the other alternatives are lefties (and Gonzalez gets hurt a lot, so what does that give you). The obvious counter to this is that doesn’t matter what side of the plate you stand on if you never actually hit the ball. 2) He can give you passable defense as a backup at both 3rd and 1st. Note I said passable, not gold glove. 3) He has decent speed, so he can serve as a pr if need be. 4) He’s cheap. His salary is $760K (MLB minimum is $740K) He has no trade value and he’s not going to be here next year. Let’s face it, we’re talking about the 13th position player and the 25th-26th guy on the roster. Dalbec bring on the team in not going to make or break the season

    Not in his case. He’s 32; I don’t see the Sox going 5 at that age unless it’s a club option or incentive based type deal for the last couple years and it’s relatively low $. More than likely he’ll be dealt.

    Meh. Leadoff walks are never good but he broke Springer’s bat on that hit and the other single was a decent pitch the hitter went down and got. Hardest hit ball was the sac fly. He hasn’t been super sharp I grant you, but let’s not pretend he’s given up 4 homers to this point.

    Smith is lucky to still be with the team now, especially after his remarks about not wanting to get hurt when he short armed that throw against the Phillies. Had Cooper not been DFA’d earlier in the day, Smith may well have been the one to go. Dalbec will be sent down when Gonzalez comes back. Smith definitely goes when Casas returns.
