  1. Agree on Duvall. Kike isn’t going anywhere this year. For one thing, he’s not going to get you anything. But beyond that, for all his issues on the field, from everything I’ve heard, he’s well liked in the clubhouse by the players. He played a big part in getting three of the better performers to sign here in Turner, Martin and Jansen. His playing time is already being reduced, and I don’t see that changing going forward barring a rash of more injuries. It’s not like he’s blocking anyone at this point. He won’t be resigned, but he will be here for 80 or do more games.
  2. Palmer didn’t like him, but Weaver knew exactly what buttons to push to get him to perform, to the tune of 8 20 win seasons in an era when wins for a starting pitcher actually meant something.
  3. I remember reading a story about Earl Weaver when he first took over the Orioles. He had Brooks Robinson and Mark Belanger on the left side of the infield . At first, he had the O”s ground crew keep the grass high, thinking that would help his gold glovers make more plays. What he found was they were making a lot of routine plays while the other teams less talented infielders were making great plays and taking hits away from Baltimore hitters. So he told the ground crew to shave the infield to a nub. After that , his guys were now making the great plays and O’s hitters were getting a lot more hits. That’s a good manager who put his talent in position to win.
  4. Bochy’s career mark is right at .500 (.499 to be exact). Managers don’t make much of a difference. They can set a short term tone but that’s about it. They win shone thry have talent, they lose when they don’t. A bad manager hurts a team far more than a good one will help one.
  5. Murphy did fine today. 1 run in 3 2/3 is more than acceptable. A bit shaky at times, but he kept the Sox in the game.
  6. Well it can trigger a platoon, but the trend has to have a larger sample size than what Duran has so far.
  7. He should at least be playing against some lefties. Maybe you sit him against an all-star type lefty, at least for now, but play him against less talented southpaws to see what he can do.
  8. He’s also a guy who loves playing in Boston.
  9. And to be fair, Bernardino did his job, allowing only a swinging bunt hit.
  10. Yep. One run will win you maybe 2 games a year.
  11. He is reliable. In a close game, he will reliably suck.
  12. Have to face 3 batters. At that point, he had only seen 2. Edit - Also he gave up the first single on the 4th pitch, the homer on the 5th pitch and the next hit on his 6th pitch. In no universe is that enough time for any reliever to get loose.
  13. The first hit he gave up wasn’t exactly roped. The next 2 not so much.
  14. Ort has usage, but only if the Sox are behind. He actually has decent numbers when the game has a margin of more than 4 runs. His worst numbers are a tie or 1 run game. In other words, he should only be used in blowout situations to save more effective arms.
  15. Can someone speak to the cat about what he’s bringing in??
  16. No idea. I’ve always wondered why a lefty can throw that curve/slider that breaks from the left handed batters box across to the right handed batters box but you never see a righty throw it a similar pitch.
  17. Jacques up. Why not Martin to save his own game with the off day tomorrow? He only threw 9 pitches in the 8th.
  18. I just looked at Kike’s numbers; amazingly, they are actually slightly better this year than last. Admittedly, that does not require much vertical.
  19. Difference is, Casas is a rookie in his 101st game. He’s may improve, he may not but the jury is still out. Kike is in his 10th year and is approaching 1000 games. He’s on the downside for sure.
  20. Asking for a sweep is difficult for any team. Your W-L prediction could very well be spot on given the state of the starting pitching. Sending out your preseason #7, #8, #9 starters for any length of time is not a recipe for success.
  21. Duran ties a major league record for doubles in a game.
