    Don’t know about fielding the grounder (sounds like a once in a lifetime happenstance) but I certainly could see allowing yourself to get hit by a batted ball to break one up.

    Actually, a heads up play by Turner. He ran right into O’Neill’s path.

    Joel Youngblood once had hits for two teams in one day. He got a hit for the Mets in an afternoon game vs the Cubs; an inning later he was traded to the Expos, got to their night game in Philadelphia and got a hit for Montreal. Turner did have a hit for the Jays earlier today.

    Sox pitching since the All Star break have allowed 4, 7, 9, 9, 0, 20, 7, 11 and 7 (so far) runs. 74 runs in 9 games, and include 1 shutout. That’s almost unfathomable.

    He fills the 5th-6th spot in the pen okay. Unfortunately, without Slaten and Martin, he’s being asked to fill anywhere from the 2-4 slot, and he’s not that type of pitcher. Plus asking pitcher to get 5 outs in an inning …

    He probably wasn’t going to get a hit, but that wasn’t even close to a swing. 2nd time tonight a Sox hitter has had a horrible call on one of those.

    How many did he throw in the pen warming up each game? Any pitcher, especially a reliever, will tell you they do add to workload. Yeah, he only threw 23 in the Friday and Saturday games, but add in probably 30-40 more hard warmups minimum and it adds up. You are correct in that he didn’t do a good job tonight, but it’s explainable.

    At least Romy hit the ball, there’s always a chance if you put it in play. O’Neill and Rafaela weren’t even competitive.

    Yeah, he was getting a little better at pitch recognition for a while, but the last few games he’s reverted to earlier form a bit.
