    Davis is also 24 (will be 25 before the end of the season) and played 3 years of relatively high level college ball at Louisville (probably equivalent to Rookie or Low-A). Mayer just turned 22 and came directly of if HS.

    1) Neither were the 62 Mets, but they still won 40 games. 2) Style points don’t matter in pro sports 3) Wood has been a decent pitcher over the course of his 12 year career. Not great, but very serviceable. You don’t stick around 12 years as a starter if you completely suck. 4) A’s have a couple big arms in that they used in the 8th-10th. 100+ is nothing to sneeze at even if the pitcher is on a bad team. Not every player on a bad team is terrible.

    Wood’s been an okay pitcher over his 12 year career; sub 4 ERA careerwise. Not a shock he’s come back with a decent outing after his horrible first start. Hopefully, the Sox can get to the A’s pen.

    No one may be happier for the A’s to leave Oakland than Bello. In 2 games there totalling 7 innings, he has allowed 5 two run homers at the Coliseum.

    Uecker is still with us, though he’s now 90 years old. He’s going to call the Brewers’ home opener tomorrow (4/2).

    That was on Yoshida getting a terrible break off 3rd. Rafaela did what he was supposed to do, which was to get in a rundown to get the runner home. I didn’t like the play because they had Castillo on the ropes, but it was not a mistake by Ceddane.

    Yep. The exceptions will be guys who are at the tail end of their careers who have never been on a team that has challenged for a title.

    Breslow is/was not President of Baseball Operations. Dombrowski is the only POBO the Red Sox have ever had. Breslow and Bloom both have/had the title of Chief Baseball Officer, which a subtle but I think significant difference. I don't think either has/had the authority the Dombrowski had. That is certainly the case when it comes to the budget. Kennedy, a non-baseball guy, has been running the whole shebang for the past few years, and the results show it.

    He had a horrific last 3 months after he was traded but he was a decent pitcher for the White Sox for several years. He’s worth a risk for a one year deal with maybe some vesting options after that. He’s only 29. Unlike some of the never weres we’re kicking the tires on, he at least has a past.

    Per the referenced article, there have been several drafts without any HOF players. Near as I can tell, drafts that produced no HOF players include 1968, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1986, 1991, 1993 and 1994. Not sure when this was written, so there may be more who subsequently got to Cooperstown from the 80s and 90s drafts. I'm pretty sure that it only includes the draft from which a player actually signed a contract, so a college player who gets drafted out of high school but chooses instead goes to play college ball is counted only when he's drafted the second time and signs. https://baseballhall.org/discover-more/stories/baseball-history/caught-in-the-draft

    Another link to my teenage years Sox; he passed away on Saturday. Solid pitcher who filled a lot of roles for the Sox. He saved games 2 and 3 of the 1975 ALCS and pitched 3 scoreless innings of Game 6 in the World Series.

    For me it was the 1966 Series, when I had just turned 8. Orioles swept the Dodgers and for some reason, I have always remembered the scores of the games: in order, 5-2, 6-0, 1-0, 1-0.

    I think a bigger issue is who ever gets the job isn’t going to be able to name their own staff. Cora’s the most obvious, but there are also front office personnel who are being kept. A new GM is going to want to bring in his/her own people; ownership is apparently not allowing that.
