  1. Hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing. - Warren Spahn
  2. Sabathia is also benefiting from a generous strike zone. He's seemingly gotten every borderline pitch. Would be interesting to know if Porcello would be as well but he hasn't thrown a lot of those tonight.
  3. If they were 54-2 some people would complain about the 2. And station is 100% correct, this club has issues.
  4. That's because CC has learned to be a pitcher. Amazing what movement and location can do.
  5. And start who? Kendrick? Velazquez?
  6. So what would your line up have been, oh wise one?
  7. Barring injury, Porcello will eat innings tonight. It's what he does, He'll give them 6-7, saving the pen. If he gets lit up, he knows the deal and he'll take one for the team and it won't carry over to his next start.
  8. Yes, but that is true of virtually all pitcher-batter match-ups, especially when it involves the bullpen. Example, David Ortiz vs. Mariano Rivera. They potentially faced each other for 17 years (1997-2013, but I don't know if they saw each other every year in that span, especially with Ortiz in Minnesota for the first 6). Per Rotoworld, Big Papi (along with Jason Varitek) had the most plate appearances against Rivera of any player. It was all of 31 (averaging less than 2 a year). If they NEVER saw each other the first six years, it still would average under 3 per season in Boston, and that's with playing 18-19 games a year. Slim as the numbers are, it's the best info they have. Leaving Barnes in was defensible. So was bringing in Kimbrel.
  9. Part of Farrell's thinking may have been this: Careerwise, going into last night, Gregorius vs. Barnes 2-4 with a BB, a HBP and 1 K, Gregorius vs. Kimbrel 0-3 with 3 K's (now 0-4 with 4 Ks) This is part of the info that most of us don't have at our fingertips while sitting in our armchairs.
  10. I'm all for it, but there is a huge hiccup: Bogaerts (and BradleyJr.) are Boras clients. The words Boras and reasonable do not belong in the same sentence. Boras really prefers to take his players to free agency, so extensions are rare. The original 3 B's are really going to have to want to stay in Boston for it to even be entertained. And it will cost major $$$$. A Pedroia type deal is not very likely for Xander; it is slightly more likely for Bradley but only because he hasn't been the same type of impact player overall as Xander. If JBJ figures it out at all offensively in the next couple years ... All three are arbitration eligible starting in 2018; the Sox would do well to offer some pretty large $$ to them over the next couple cycles.
  11. Bad AB there by Vazquez. Not his best night.
  12. Bull. He knows it's coming and it short hopped him.
  13. You know, we wax about how great Vasquez is defensively but he lets far too many balls like that get by him. Got to knock that down. It wsn't that hard a play.
  14. When you see this, it's hard to believe Big Papi never hit 3 in a game.
  15. Lot's of 3-2 counts. 7 Ks. He only walked 2 (one on 4 pitches that looked semi-intentional to Judge). The Yankees fouled off a lot of 2 strike pitches. There were a couple of 8 pitch ABs, a 9 pitch one and a 12 pitch one. There wasn't a lot of solid contact overall by Yankee hitters. There were at least 3 infield hits and a bloop. He wasn't sharp but he hung in there.
  16. Rutledge was not likely to drive him home from first (he's had 1 extra base hit all year) whereas you at least have a shot from second. Also, I think they said JBJ was something like 24 for 26 in steal attempts career wise (now 24-27); I have no issue with the attempt. Personally, I don't think JBJ runs enough. Since he was thrown out by 10 feet, I don't think JBJ got all that good a jump off a guy who seemed pretty slow to the plate. However, Joseph's throw was perfect, so I doubt he would have been safe anyway. Sometimes the other team makes plays.
  17. That must have been an absolutely horrible jump by JBJ. Givens is slow to the plate and Bradley was out by 10 feet. It was a perfect throw so he probably would have been out anyway.
  18. Exactly. Porcello was not good tonight but as he finishes his night, once again he has at least given them a chance. But the hitters have to cooperate a little.
  19. 1) He's in his 9th year in the majors; he is long past the time they could send him down without his consent. 2) More importantly, who are you going to go with in his place? 3) He's returned to what he is, a #3 type starter. Last year was the fluke. With a little run support, Sox record in games he's started would be a lot better. They are 't scoring for him.
  20. Sorry Dewey, didn't see this before I posted. In answer to your question, Craig has about 4 years big league service time, so he had no say so in a minor league assignment. Plus, he still had options.
  21. Moon, we've been through this; the Craig/Castillo treatment won't work with Sandoval. As a 5+ year vet, he can refuse any minor league assignment, which would force the Sox to keep him on the major league roster or DFA him. If the latter, somebody could sign him (it will be for the minimum) and the Sox are on the hook for the difference. If no one signs him, they are on the hook for the whole thing. Either way, all or virtually all of his remaining $50+ million salary will count against the cap over the next 3 years.
  22. I agree as well. If it does come to that, Pom should be the one to go to the pen, if for no other reason than it's a role he's had before.
  23. Actually Kimmi, Johnson has made 2 starts this season. His first one, on April 18 at Toronto, wasn't nearly as good. He got the win, but the line was 5 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 BBs and 5 K's. If it comes to moving someone, Pom to the pen makes more sense; its a role he's a role he's had before. Right now, it's too early for that.
  24. If Sandoval had 1/2 year instead of 2 1/2 years left on his contract, he would likely be the one to go. But those extra 2 years loom large to the guys who have actually pay the contract, so it's not always strictly a baseball decision. Rutledge was a Rule 5 selectee, which means if they do decide to cut ties with him, they have to offer him back to Colorado for $25,000. They can't directly send him down. I'm not even sure he has options. He is at least holding his own offensively. Too bad the can't morph Rutledge and Marrero together into one player. There's not a lot of use speculating since there is no way of knowing how long Pedroia will be out. If I had to hazard a guess, it would be Travis going back down so he can get regular ABs (since they are using him now only against southpaws).
