    I had the misfortune of living next to Heyman when he was just starting out with the Moline Dispatch over 30 years ago; he was an ass then and apparently still is. I'm long time friends with the guy who was his sports editor back then; he thought Heyman was an ass too.

    Why don't you ask Bill Lee, who was suckered tackled from behind by Graig Nettles and lost all feeling in his arm. He was never really the same, although he did have one more decent season several years later.

    Estrada's 34 now, so it's hard to say how he'll fare from here forward. I don't recall if he's ever been overpowering, but if he can change speeds and locate, he could be somewhat successful for a few more years. Jones had an arm injury late in his Cy Young year, IIRC, and was never the same after that. My point was that 95+ is not a necessity.

    Well said. Porcello has had a few gems this year as well, but it doesn't change his overall lousy season.

    Vargas probably isn't as good as he was in the first half nor as bad as he's been in the second half. Goes for Estrada and a lot of guys. Heck, it went for Pomeranz last year. The real point is that people need to get off this should have pounded him crap based on their perception of stuff. There are many ways to get hitters out, not all of them involve throwing the ball 95+. Maybe the Sox hitters just aren't as good as people here think they are.

    You do realize Estrada was selected to the All-Star team only a year ago, right? No, that guy hasn't been pitching this season, but it's not like it isn't in him to do so. He changed speeds effectively. If you throw everything the same speed, major league hitters will catch up to it (Joe Kelly is a good example of this). Take a pitcher who can change speeds (i.e., can upset timing), facing a team that doesn't hit off-speed stuff all that well to begin with and is in a overall teamwide slump, and you've got the ingredients for a 3 hitter. 40 years ago, Randy Jones won a Cy Young and had a couple 20 win seasons throwing pitches as slow as 72 mph (and topping out at 85). There are many ways to get hitters out.

    Machado is a borderline dirty player (I saw he tried something similar on Gregorius on Monday), but it can at least be argued his dirtiness happens in the course of game action. Players can police that with by not diving into third but going in with the spikes a little high; I'm a little surprised it hasn't happened already. Sanchez has no such defense.

    I think there was a little bit of this on Mookie's part as well. On the postgame radio show, Betts admitted he was so tired he didn't even look to see where the CF was playing. He basically just took off. If Pillar is playing a normal CF (and with anyone except Hanley, he probably would have been shallower), he catches it, doubles Mookie off and we are having a bunch more pages about boneheaded baserunning. But it worked out.

    He was being roasted for that here. As I posted the other day, Sale's worst month historically (by far) is September and his second worst is August.

    Juiced ball is out (this assumes everyone is hitting the same balls) IMO, the overall approach has to change. The bit about taking automatically taking strike one has to be altered. If the pitch is on the outside corner at the knees, fine. But how many times have we watched get me over fastballs in the middle of the plate let go. Most of the time they don't even follow the pitch. And even when they swing at them, I'm not convinced they are fully committed to doing so. Another thing these guys have to learn to do is foul off tough 2 strike pitches. Yeah,sometimes the pitcher is going to get you. The Yankees did this to perfection against both Sale and Pomeranz. There is no reason most of these guys can't do the same thing. Finally, if they are going to pitch you outside, go the other way.

    I would say 1988 was hardly change for change sake: 1) It was July. 2) With John McNamara at the helm, the Sox had gone from an out away from a World Series title in 1986 to a 78-84 record and a 5th place finish in 1987. 3) They were 43-42 at the All-Star break in 1988, in 4th place and 9 games back. The current situation meets all but 3 of those. Oh, and despite Morgan Magic getting them the division title, they got swept by the A's in the ALCS.

    The thing is, this isn't that far below his career norms: Starting from his rookie year in 2009 - ERA 3.96, 4.92, 4.75, 4.59, 4.32, 3.43, 4.92, 3.15, 4.67 WHIP 1.336, 1.389, 1.407, 1.531, 1.282, 1.231, 1.360, 1.009, 1.401 HR/9 1.2, 1.0, 0.9, 0.8, 0.9, 0.8, 1.3, 0.9, 1.7 The W-L and HR/9 are way out of norm, but a lot of his stats are fairly average for him. He's a low #3, #4 type pitcher. Last year was the outlier.

    You said good pitchers don't lose 20 games. I listed several good (and in a few cases great) pitchers who did. Porcello has not been good this year, there is no disputing that point. His record is where it should be. He's lost a few where he pitched well but got no run support; he's also won a couple where he didn't pitch too well but got good run support that day.

    Actually, there are a lot of good pitchers who have lost 20 games, including several Hall of Famers. Note I am not comparing Porcello to any of them: Phil Niekro (twice) Wilbur Wood (twice)(to be fair, he also WON 20 one of those years) Steve Carlton (a year after he won 27) Luis Tiant Mel Stottlemyre Heck, go way back and Walter Johnson is on the list twice. Repeat, I am not comparing Porcello to any of them.

    Betts is getting nothing to pull. First pitch fastball, which he takes 95+% of the time (I agree he needs to get a little more aggressive with those, he is letting hittable pitches go by a lot), followed by sliders and sinkers away and down. Until he starts going the other way with those, he isn't going to hit. Beni is doing just fine, not sure I'd have him doing much different than he has been at at he plate.
