  1. It's especially suspicious when they made a big deal about the league office's being closed for the Labor day weekend, yet the Tigers involved began serving their suspensions Saturday. Prediction: they will be announced tomorow. Romine's will be reduced to one game, he will sit out tomorrow's game. Sanchez's will also be reduced a game and he will miss 1 Oriole game and 2 Rangers games. Torre always takes care of his boys.
  2. Reason to be concerned about Sale: Historically, he wears down as the season progresses. September is by far his worst month careerwise. Fewest IP, highest ERA (by more than half a run), highest WHIP (by .18), only month with a losing record (9-15). August is his second worst month in those regards. Perhaps those who were complaining when Farrell tried to get the rotation extra days rest here and there back in July and early August should maybe consider JF knew what he was trying to do. (Okay, that's probably asking too much). I'm pretty sure he had these types of stats available when all they saw was his last start.
  3. Magic Numbers: Division - 23 Wild Card - 21
  4. Won't be Owens; they are sending him to the Arizona Fall League. They aren't doing that with the intent of releasing him, at least as of now. Might be his last shot, though. If he shows nothing in the AFL, he's be gone by spring. Johnson is going to the AFL as well, along with Chavis. My guess would be Martin. Lin and Marrero will be up Tuesday, as will Smith.
  5. OH, I agree Farrell sent him, and I had no issue with him doing so The onus was on Betts to at least attempt to put the ball in play. It's not like it was one of those 3 inches outside called strikes Sabathia got a few times last night.
  6. Neither you nor I have a clue as to what coaching Beni is or is not getting. All we know is he's been up a little more than a year and continues to make the same mistakes over and over again. Whether it's lack of coaching, unwillingness to learn or inability to learn is the question. Could be any combination of the three. If we know nothing else about Farrell, it's that he doesn't say anything bad about his players in public. Tell me how coaching would have prevented the play at second last night? You can preach theory on that one all day and night, but that's a situation that you have to experience to learn from. In this sense, Farrell is right, the game has to teach you. It was a dumb play and despite that, he still was a questionable replay reversal away from pulling it off. That smacks of a guy who's been able to outrun mistakes since he started playing. The only thing coaching would have done there is coach aggressiveness out of him, and we don't want that either.
  7. 3-2 I doubt it was a hit and run, but Betts, as the great Tiger announcer Ernie Harwell used to put it, "stood there like a house at the side of the road". It was a pitch you have to at least offer at.
  8. We're not talking about sacrifice bunts here. But several of these guys could and should learn to bunt for base hits.
  9. He strikes me has a guy who has gotten by on sheer physical ability to this point. He was the national high school player of the year; he was the national college player of the year. He's played the game, but he's never learned the game. He's always been able to out run or out talent his mistakes. At every level, there are always a few players you can't do that to. You're not better than they are or at least, you aren't that much better. Those are the guys the pros sign.
  10. Lee was never the same after that.
  11. Bill Lee and Graig Nettles, 1976
  12. Who cares? He isn't here any more.
  13. Agree, and certain guys should really learn to. The only on purpose bunt hits I remember this year have been Leon and Moreland. Bradley has the speed to get several a year. So do the rest of the B's (Bogaerts, Benintendi and Betts). And once on, all of them are capable of turning that into a double. They don't have to do it that often, just a few times.
  14. Hicks squared both of his first 2 times up last night. Since ERod is also dealing with a knee issue, I assume CC was also upset about that.
  15. Moon's got it right, who are you going to put there? Yeah, you can move Nunez up. But Farrell still has to slot a bunch of guys who aren't hitting and haven't since the all-star break. Second half slash lines per Baseball Reference: Benintendi .276/.367/.790 Betts .240/.322/.652 Ramirez .221/.302/.731 Bogaerts .205/.279/.587 Moreland .256/.321/.785 Benintendi and Moreland are roughly the same as the first half, and it could be said both are around what we probably could have expected. The other 3? A different story. Bogaerts needs to be benched. Now. He is contributing nothing.
  16. Despite my signature proclamation, with the Sox issues against both those teams this year, I want those 7 games going 4-3 one way or the other.
  17. No, they got a discount because Torre is the once who decides these things. They always do. And notice they conveniently waited until the rosters expanded. That being said, my guess is the results will be announced Monday; that way Yanks have all hands on deck for this weekend. I would not be surprised to see both Sanchez's and Romine's reduced 1 game each (to 3 and 1; given his role, Romine's is a little more understandable in that regard, Sanchez's ought to be raised). Romine will miss one game of the Yanks-Orioles series and Sanchez will miss the 1 in that series and the 2 in the Yanks-Rangers series.
  18. Do you ph Moreland for Bogaerts. I do.
  19. No, he needs to sit. He looks absolutely lost up there and has for 2 months. Playing through whatever it is, physical or mental, isn't working.
  20. Watching Nunez tonight, I want him nowhere near the outfield.
  21. Quite frankly, Bogaerts needs some bench time for several days.
  22. Jim Kaat on the MLB network telecast noted that ERod does not have the same leg lift he did before his knee injury, his turn isn't quite as far and his stride is not as direct to the plate. It was an interesting side by side. But unless he becomes a pitcher instead of a thrower, he will be a disappointment.
  23. Yeah the offense managing 1 run has nothing to do with it. Do actually watch the games?
  24. That makes 4 of them this year. 3 runs in 26 innings. The man knows how to pitch and IMO he is in the Red Sox heads.
  25. Going off the time stamp; you have a very warped view of batting practice.
