  1. Remember, rosters can be changed before each round. I don’t think Early will be on the wild card round roster. Crochet will start game 1. Then it’s Bello and Giolito in some order. Early pitched yesterday, so he normally would go Thursday at the earliest, and one of B & G is penciled in for that any game that day. No need for him this round. He will definitely be on an ALDS roster as 4 starters are needed there. If it takes 3 games to win the wild card round, he would probably start game 1 on Saturday. DeLeon is here for today only no matter what he does.
  2. Eaton will be on it for sure. He has some speed, can play decent D at multiple positions and isn’t going to embarrass himself at the plate. The final position player slot will come down to Sogard or Hamilton. Neither is a great option, so I’m guessing Hamilton for pure speed. Bernardino would be the choice for the final pitching spot, but I don’t know if he’s recovered. Otherwise it’s Harrison or Tolle; I don’t know who to take between those 2. They could go with 14 position players and 12 pitchers, but they won’t.
  3. I don't think you see Skubal tomorrow. The Tigers are in and they need the Guardians to lose to even have a chance at the Division. Having him available for the wild card round is far more important for them. Pitching him is too big a chance.
  4. 5 seed will play Toronto or the Yankees (whichever doesn’t win the East). 6 seed will play Detroit or Cleveland (whichever wins the Central).
  5. Wong should play the next two games as well. Narvaez has looked tired lately and a couple days off aren’t going to hurt him. Not a lot of resting you can do with a 5 man bench.
  6. Not really; Romy's got decent speed but he is not a good base stealer (he gets terrible jumps).
  7. If you want to, subscribe to Apple+ for a 7 day trial then cancel right after the game. A bit of a pain and I’m not going to do it, but it is an option.
  8. Cleveland losing twice to the Rangers would also do it. Not likely, but not unfathomable either.
  9. So I get to listen to the dulcid tones of Wil Flemming on Sirius and watch the game (if it’s worth it) on MLB.tv later when the replay’s available.
  10. Weekend rotation is Harrison, Early and Giolito. Crochet on Sunday would be the only possible short rest start and they’re not going to sub him for Giolito. Either the hitters show up or its curtains. Can’t revert to scoring 1-2 runs a game.
  11. Unfortunately, Bello has reverted to nibbling his past several starts. He really had gotten away from that for the summer months and was pitching better than Crochet for a while.
  12. It’s not an elimination game for the Astros. Yes, a loss eliminates them from beating out the Red Sox but they are 1 game behind the Tigers for the final WC slot. Houston can still claim that spot, although it’s a long shot as they don’t hold the tiebreaker over the Tigers.
  13. 4 days before (3 days rest was the norm back then), he outdualed Vida Blue in a complete game win, allowing only 1 unearned run. Darrel Johnson must have felt sorry for him after the long Angels game and gave him an extra day off. His next start he went 10 against the A’s in another win; Diego Segui pitched the bottom of the 11th for a save.
  14. He’s a 22 year old kid who started the year in High A ball and 15 months ago was pitching for TCU. He’ll learn or he’ll be a short term career minor leaguer. The plus is he’s 22, he’s got time.
  15. Ryan was wimp that night. El Tiante went the distance in a 15 inning loss.
  16. All of which means absolutely nothing. Any pitcher in the majors has the ability to shut down any team at any time. What separates the great from the good from the average from the poor is how often they can do it. In the 1955 World Series, Don Larsen started game 2 and didn’t last 2 innings. 4 days later he threw a perfect game. Scherzer isn’t anywhere near what he once was, but that doesn’t mean he’s not capable of coming up with a gem every once in a while. He threw several pretty good games in a row in late July and August but has struggled since. I like our odds, but you never know.
  17. Astros lose in Sacramento. Sox magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 4 (not going to get into tiebreakers, which could reduce that number depending on who and how many teams tie).
  18. That was an in between hop. The short hop and the high hop are much emote routine plays..
  19. Biggest issue was losing a bunch of extra inning games on the road, often not even getting the runner off of second. Pretty hard to blame any reliever for a loss in that situation Second issue was going 1-5 against the Angels.
  20. The 2nd (and 3rd) tiebreakers are complicated enough. In the event of a 3 way tie (entirely possible), I think MLB will require some time on a Cray Supercomputer to figure it all out. Near as I can tell, virtually all the tiebreakers on several levels are within a game of each other, meaning there are too many permutations to even try and figure out. Bottom line, the Red Sox control their own destiny.
  21. He will now. If he holds it at 3, fine. If it gets away further, oh well.
  22. Just shows not every mistake is a homer and not every homer is on a mistake. Uceta looked like he had some pretty serious movement on those pitches.
  23. It should have set up 2nd and 3rd. Not his fault Gonzalez was sent, and he did score the 1st run, so not unproductive. The other 3 ABs were pathetic, not only because of the result, but they followed the exact same pattern. Fastball up high to get ahead then soft stuff down that he swung over.
  24. It should have set up 2nd and 3rd. Not his fault Gonzales was sent.
