Woo won game one 9-7. They were walked 8 times! RGonz went 2-3 w a 3B and HR (1.414 OPS) Nobody else had 2 hits or an XBH. Fitts went 4.1 w 6 hits, 0 ER, 2BB, 3K Gambrell was lit up in game 2. (4IP, 8H, 5ER, 1BB, 2K,) and the Sox are down 5-0 after 3.5 innings. POR was snowed out. GRE is down 3-2 through 5. (Perales 1 IP, 3H, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) SAL tied 2-2 in 3. Bleis w 2 rbi.

Good point. And when someone say JBJ was the not best defensive CF'er in MLB in his era, he might still have been better than Piersall, who might very well have been the best of his era.

So many Sox CF'ers who played good to very good defense, just played here for a short time, so it is hard to include them in our rankings. Many of us are looking at wildly different time frames, when saying "the best I've ever seen." Certainly, JBJ had a pretty long run of excellent defense. I think he was hampered by making difficult plays look easy, and didn't make a ton of diving and spectacular looking plays. Lynn got hurt and was traded, too early in his time with the Sox. Lewis, Crisp and several others did not play long enough with BOS to get the a lot of support on being the "best."

You could be right. I think some/many just felt he was the best defensive Sox CF'er they'd ever seen. Probably, someone said the best in MLB, in his time. I'm not sure that warrants the "over rated" label.

Nobody said he was the best in MLB, "in his day," so how is he "over rated?" BTW, I am not arguing JBJ was better than Piersall. I have no way of knowing or even formulating an opinion on who was better. I'm not even sure JBJ was the best in my time following MLB. To me, it's close between JBJ, Lynn and Crisp with Kike's sample size being too small to be included.

DRS is a pretty good way to judge defense. It's been around since 2003, so there is no judging ZLynn and others. I actually did the math wrong (again.) The K difference was 800 more per season when JBJ was in CF.

I could see these 7 on the '25 team: Rafaela Abreu Fitts Slaten Teel Anthony Mayer Add those 7 to all the pre-arb and 1st or 2nd year arb guys in 2025, and a nice foundation can be viewed as good enough to splurge on filling a couple rotation slots and a top closer.

Heard on sportstalk, down here in HOU, that the Astros are first in OPS and several other offensive categories and 6th in pitching, but are still 2-5.

I'd like to know how many balls were hit to CF in each of those 2 eras. I can tell you this: Ks by staff 1955-1957: 2078 2016-2018: 4500 That's over 2400 batters (800 per season) that hit the ball nowhere for an out, in JBJ's time.

He also had a smooth and long stride that made it look like he was not really moving that fast. He seemed to always take the exact right route to the ball. It was very rare to see him change direction or have to reach back to make a catch. I have no beef with anyone who says JBJ was the best they have ever seen.

Looking at soxprospects.com's ETAs on our top 20: 2024 4. Rafaela 7. Abreu 9. Fitts (late) 11. Yorke (late) 20. Slaten 2025 1. Anthony 2. Mayer 3. Teel (early) 8. Wikelman 13. Meidroth 16. Jordan 17. Hickey 2026 5. Bleis 10. Perales 12. Sandlin 15. Castros 19. Paulino 2027 6. Cespedes 18. Jo Garcia 12 total for 2024 to 2025. Of course, several will not make it, or will stay for just a short time on the 26 in the next 2 seasons, but it looks like at least 6-7 should.

It's been almost 5 years, since DD left the Sox. It's understandable some of his prospects would still not have graduated. Here are their current soxprospects.com's rankings: 4. Looks about right. I've been high on Cespedes for a while. (It's a smooth buzz... lol.) I've liked K Campbell's upside, but am a bit surprised he jumped that much. None of the droppers surprise me.

Darren Lewis was really good, too. Fred Lynn, of course. I agree on JBJ, then Coco, but Rafaela may end up passing both.

After this next series at LAA, we'll have another day off, followed by a 10 game homestand: 3 BAL 3 LAA 4 CLE Then, no day off and a road trip of 3 at PIT and 3 at CLE and a 6 game home stand vs CHC & SFG. No days off from April 9th to May 5th, which fall in the middle of a mini road trip at MN & ATL. Possible starting pitchers: @LAA Crawford (+1 Day of rest) @LAA Whitlock (+1) @LAA Houck (+1) OFF BAL Bello (+2) BAL Pivetta (+2) BAL Crawford (+1) LAA Whitlock (+1) LAA Houck (+1) LAA Bello (no more extra days of rest until May 5.)
