I was very hopeful our catchers would improve, this year- both on O and D. many catchers mature in their late 20's and even after 30-31.
I hope this can continue, but expect something over .725 from our catchers, combined. Maybe .750+ is not too much to think might occur.
For argument's sake, say the top Sox brass assures Cora they will spend much more in the next 5 years: can he believe them?
Even if he does, it may not be enough to make him want to stay. How well this year's team does may play a role in how he views the future, here. He's also likely to be excited about Anthony, Teel, Mayer and maybe a couple others looking to graduate in 1-2 years, with more coming in 3-4 years.
Hard to know what he's thinking or feeling.
Wow! That was with the CWS, on the Sox...
The closest might be Bill Hall with 18 HRs and 46 RBI. Some other warped numbers...
30+ HRs
2018: Betts 32 HRs and 80 RBI
1997: Mo Vaughn 35 HRs 91 RBI
1977: George Scott 33-95
1982: Evans 32-98
1986: Baylor 31-94
2021: Renfroe 31-96
1997: Nomar 30-98
Others below 30:
29-78 Evans '85
25-59 Salty '12
24-63 Evans '78
23-60 Papi '12
21-58 Evans '79
21-58 Duvall '23
19-52 HRam '15
Good trivia question.
It could be 7:
Casas, Valdez, Hamilton, Duran and McGuire plus Yoshida & Devers.
(Abreu is the only BL/TL on the everyday roster.)
If HOU beats TEX, tonight, the Sox will be pass them for the 3rd best AL record.
8-2 NYY
7-2 CLE
6-2 TEX
7-3 BOS (4th but could be 3rd, after tonight)
6-3 DET
MLB
8-2 NYY & PIT
7-2 CLE
6-2 TEX, ATL & MIL
7-3 BOS (7th best before TEX game.)
This may not last long, but it has been fun.
I'd rather keep Rafaela in CF (not SS,) and Duran in LF (not CF.)
I think SS Reyes & 2B Grissom is better defense than SS Grissom & 2V Valdez/Reyes.
I seriously doubt we go out and get a SS stopgap. It's our M.O.
How long can a team hold out hope a player can return to the value he held for a month of so in 2020 and the last 4 months of 2021?
That seems like a decade ago.
I think he'd be a plus defender at 1B, but we have Casas, so DH is fine with some work at 1B, when Casas needs a rest. We could try to avoid giving Casas days off by DH'ing him 20-25 games, instead of giving him 10 days off.
We'd have to trade Yoshida, or play him in LF. (Yikes!)
The time has come where those of us who want Devers moved off 1B to no longer have to give reasons.
Granted, it can't happen, right now, but this is it.
