    So, just short of $300M was not considered near enough to "market value," which is understandable. After deferments, he essentially signed for $306M. (Covid likely brought down that contract, but still...)

    Of course missing time "changed" how many innings he pitched. Bogey was almost always healthy. Crochet has has TJS. The injury concern is part of the extension consideration.

    His limited resume is largely due to missed time due to injury, so that was the ironman reference. He was also a RP'er before this past year, so that is a factor not related to being an ironman or not, correct.

    If we add a 3Bman and don't trade Casas, Yoshida will play more LF than any of us want. Casas and Devers should play 155-162 games at 1B and DH, leaving maybe 10 games open for Yoshida or Ref to DH, barring injuries. It's not ideal, but as of now, our corner IF sucks, and without Ref in the OF, Abreu might have to start vs LHPs. No added 3BMan should mean 10 or less games for Yoshi in LF. Yes added 3BMan likely means Yoshida plays LF vs LHPs (Duran in CF & Rafaela in RF) and maybe some games vs RHPs (Duran in CF and Abreu in RF with rafaela on the bench.) Duran and Rafaela are close to even on D in CF, so there is no drop off, there. The drop off is in LF, going from Duran to Yoshida, but the upgrade at 3B should more than outweigh the loss in LF. Again, not ideal. Signing Grichuk would change this equation, but we have to look at the whole line-up and who Yoshida is playing instead of to get the net gain or loss on O and D

    My paper, but steamers has our rotation #1 in the AL, but lower in their batting+defense combined metric than mine comes to.

    Romy or Grissom, or Mayer on a crash course like Bogey had when he was called up (10 games at 3B in AAA.)

    Even worse than what, though? If he's in the OF more than 10 games, it is very likely due to an addition at 3B or 1B, and overall, we'll likely be better on D and O, despite Yoshida being in LF. We aren't putting Yoshida in LF so Abreu can DH. Yoshida in LF, when the DH slot is not used by Casas or Devers makes very little sense to me, but without Anthony on the 26, I can see wanting to sit Abreu vs LHPs with Refsnyder in LF, those games. I doubt I'd want to sit Rafaela vs RHPs, so Yoshida plays LF instead of DH.

    Yes, and maybe Bogey is the best comp for Crochet, despite the positional difference. There was a difference, there, too. Bogey signed at the start of his final arb year in 2019. Crochet has 2 arbs left. That $20M x 3 (before opt out) was a "team friendly" deal, IMO.

    Lester did indicate he'd take a hometown discount, but even so, the money back then was a lot- obviously more than JH was willing to give. I'm still not so sure paying Bogey "whatever he would have taken" will prove to be worth it. Yes, Mookie was in a class by himself.

    The same can be said about every team. On paper, our rotation is top 3 in the AL. Our pen might be 6th to 9th. IMO, our bats are 5th to 8th, our baserunning 2nd to 5th and our defense is 10th to 13th but needs a healthy Story.

    That's what I think, and even 1 more year is better than none, within reason. The comp with Betts, Bogey and Lester is a fair one, but those guys wanted big money, as they were proven stars. I do not think Crochet will ask for their money, adjusted for inflation, so maybe JH will be more likely to sign off on an overpay that is not as hefty as the FA market demands.

    That sounds fair. If the rumors are true, we are still looking to add something useful, and maybe it could be significant, like Scott or Bregman. Someone like Grichuk and Estevez or Finnegan could be enough to make us playoff faves.

    I'd look to extend the top 3 and Crochet. Be fair. Be a little generous. Get it done.

    I'm glad Brez is willing to deal away some pieces from the farm, while still maintaining a strong one. He has also made a lot of moves to try and balance the farm by adding more pitchers. While Slaten is no longer a prospect, that was a nice get. He has also added: Fitts, Weissert & Judice (Verdugo) Priester (Yorke) Sandlin (Schreiber) He also gave up Lugo, Paullino, C Coffey Kavadas, Portes and others for rentals like Garcia, Jansen and Sims. He traded away our two top picks (everyday players) for Crochet. Of the remaining draftees from 2024, 5 of the top 7 bonuses handed out were pitchers. 3 of the top 9 IFA bonuses given were to pitchers, and while that does not seem like a lot, we don't usually do that.

    Agreed. They will not pay some absurd amount, just because he demands it and threatens to walk after 2, but I do think this may be a case where we overstep our preset notion of value to make sure we land him for more year. I see this as a higher priority than Soto, fried, Burnes and other big fish we checked in on, and more importantly, this should not cost the same money those big fish ended up costing.

    Yes, I get that, but he is not likely going to be the FT LF'er, so we are probably only talking about the negative he brings in just a few games in LF. Also, let's assume he plays 60-90 or more games in LF, because we sign Bregman to play 3B, and casas and Devers take up all the 1B PAs and most of the DH PAs. Does the 3B defensive improvement outweigh the loss we see in LF D? It's my guess that if Bregman or Arenado is at 3B, at worst, Yoshida platoons LF w Refsnyder, so that might be 120 games, assuming Bregman, Casas and Devers play 155+ games, each. Whenever one is out, Yoshida would DH. I'm not happy with Yoshida in LF. I wish we could dump him, and have tried to find numerous ways to do it, but it looks almost impossible, so we will end up trying to play him in ways the minimize the overall team's hit on D and running while maximizing the little plus he brings on offense vs guys like Rafaela, and Abreu v L only.

    Baserunning matters as does GIDPs, both minuses for Yoshida. He sucks at both. He also does no K a lot, and maybe all those weak grounders to 2B does move runners over to 3B. You do know O'Neill hit into 13 DPs in 473 PAs, while Yoshida hit into 6 in 421, and if Yoshi plays a lot of LF, that's the guy's PAs he's replacing.

    That was one aspect of the context, and what he produced was real. We could get 61 RBIs with a less skilled player: it's still 61 runs produced. The #1 point was not the most important context, but it still matters, just as the unmentioned 49 games missed due to injury and rest days by O'Neill. I'm not downplaying O'Neill's loss. I still hope we add a RHB w power, but I do think we can come close to our 2024 ranking on offense, as is. That is not how a team should try to improve their record, and maybe we are not done. Our name is linked to Bregman, Alonso, Grichuk and Arenado. I'm not sure how much Arenado adds to the offense, even vs LHPs, but he would add to the defense in a big way.

    The "world" was hyperbole. Giving up 3 of your top 8 prospects is a lot, even for a lower ranked farm system, but from a top heavy farm like ours, that was a lot. We gave up our last two top picks. We all know how you view "suspects," and your position has merit. They may all end up sucking, but I doubt we hear the end of it, if Crochet is so-so and one or two of those prospects go on to be really good. The fact is, we gave up a of of value for him and not someone else. Speculative value is still value, as it showed by us landing Crochet by spending it.

    I really wish we could start a season not having to hope or pray for a full season from Story and Casas, but it is what it is. I like our 2B outlook better than I did, last winter. I worry more about our catcher D, than I did, last winter. I think our offense can make up for the loss of O'Neill and stay similarly ranked, but it would be nice to make a move to improve it, beyond needing to hope a top prospect or two steps in and steps up.

    It's "context" to me. Why only bring up losing O'Neill, like he's the only bat we lost from the 2024 team? The others, who totalled more PAs don't matter as much? Did we lose a great defender and baserunner in O'Neill? Granted, there is a drop from O'Neill to Yoshida, especially if Yoshida is in LF, but maybe it's not as great as we think, and we can make that up by doing better than the others who left.

    His bat is what it is. As a DH, who cares how bad his D is? How important is baserunning? Yes, his D and running subtract from his overall value, but he a better hitter than half the everyday batters on the opening day 13. If he is forced to play LF, too much, his overall value will take a hit, but his added offense may make up for that, and if we improve 3B defense and or get another bif RHB that forces him to play LF, the gains made there can more than make-up for minor losses on baserunning and a significant loss on LF D.
