Great points. I liked Pom and his 3 playoff cycles of team control. He didn't help last year, but he has this year. He's done better than anyone expected, but we need a ring to clinch the idea that we "won the trade" or "broke even" assuming Espi goes on to do well.

The other key fact was that we led the league in runs by 100 last year. Scoring 100 less runs this year is significant, and saying we'd still have led the league is a bit misleading in some ways. Yes, what made the rest of the league leap frog us? Half the reason was us coring 100 less runs. The other half is almost certainly tied to the massive power increase that somehow passed us by. Losing big Papi had a role in both of these halves. Significant downturns by 8 of our returning 9 top PA players from 2016 plays a huge role as well.

Not a bad idea, but how does Belt solve our clean-up hitter void? He does not have more power than HRam or Moreland and has just a slightly better OPS.

Yes, and to me, the chances of two bad years are higher than two good years. For just this reason, I said before the 2016 season, we should trade HRam after 2016, even if he hits over .900. I changed my mind after he had a good 2016, mostly because Papi retired, but I should haves tuck to my guns. -

If you change every one of Stanton's HR to a DBL, his SLG% would still be .429, which is still higher than HRam and Moreland. His OPS would still be .804 and would be the best OPS among Sox regulars. No, with all due respect, I think you underestimate just how great a hitter he is.

Again, you don't know that for sure. At times, teams do not put in a claim, because they are not interested in trading players for the guy at that time, and they know the team will be asking for players or asking for too much. I am as close to certain as possible that when Stanton is traded, the Marlins will get good players/prospects in return. They probably will pay a small part of his contract but not a lot. Maybe, this winter, the Marlins might take HRam (as a salary offset for the first 1-2 years of Stanton's contract) or Castillo (as a more spread out salary relief), Chavis and Beeks or Shawaryn. If they took HRAm, our luxury tax budget would barely go up for 1-2 years. We could also add a key FA or two to fill other needs, such as signing Nunez and a 1Bman like Duda, Morrison or Alonso. 1. I've been happy with JF's recent line-ups and what seems like a lessening of bonehead plays, but batting Holt second today is unforgivable. 1 Bogey SS 2 Holt 2B 3. Beni LF 4 Moreland 1B 5 Vaz C 6 Devers 3B 7 Young RF 8 JBJ CF 9 ERod P I might have tried this.... 1 Bogey 2 Vaz 3 Beni 4 Devers 5 Moreland 6 JBJ 7 Young 8 Holt or Lin 9 ERod

He'd be an upgrade over Moreland, but he doesn't solve the lack of power problem at all. Belt's never hit over 18 HRs. Moreland can do that.

So, we sign an ace and then trade ERod (and others) for who? Votto? Make Stanton a 1Bman? Am I missing anyone?

1st question, notin: If you only could get one of these guys for 2018-2019 (forget the beyond), who would it be? Hosmer Santana JD Martinez (at 1B? or DH?) Duda Morrison Alonso Moreland 2nd question: Is trading for Votto or Stanton a realistic option and what would a reasonable package look like? HRam or Porcello (as salary offset?) Bogey (we then maybe sign Cozart?) Groome or Mata Chavis or Ockimey

While I do not think acquiring an ace is our top priority, and maybe not even our second priority, I'd always be kicking the tires on any ace that becomes available. When I saw Quintana and Gray traded away for what I felt were relative underpays, I couldn't help but wonder "what if...". Acquiring an ace would allow us to trade Porcello or ERod or Wright, of just keep them all. Look at the Dodgers. They stockpile starters and still end up needing another. With Pom becoming a FA after next year and Sale and Porcello the year after, you jump at an ace whenever you can. That being said, we need a top quality clean-up hitter for 2018 to maximize our chances at a ring.

Then, there's this.... Had Price pitched 2 days earlier, maybe that might have helped accelerate his build up to 60-80 pitches a little more quickly.

Does HRam need surgery? If so, maybe he'll come back and have a year like 2016 or even better. He's not too old to have another really big year. One problem is, he could have a great 2018, vest the option and then stink again in 2019. -
Yes, but his best season was really after his team control ran out with the Marlins.

I'm a huge Beni fan, but some of his "bonehead" plays don't count as errors, so maybe it's all evened out this year. Beni still has so much upside potential. It makes me giddy.
