  1. If Bogey improved from 2016 to 2017 on defense it was by the slimmest of margins. Moose is a very significant upgrade on defense over Devers. Worst to average is huge.
  2. If we get JD, I think we trade JBJ- perhaps (with others) for Abreu or a SP'er.
  3. Cause you've seen all these guys play 150 games this year, right? Only 2 SSs have a worse than -15 DRS since 2015, and Bogey is at -21 (dead last out of 33. Only 7 have a DRS worse than -9. That means Bogey has 3 times the negative DRS than all but 6 of the remaining 32 SSs in MLB! To call that average is shocking. His UZR/150 shows him at 19 out 33. I guess you could call that slightly below average or stretch it to average, but with the DRS data, I can't see it. My personal observations support the numbers. His range is not that good (23rd out of 33). He does okay on balls hit right to him. What bothers me most, is that he's gotten worse since 2015 (his best year). That year he was +1.0 UZR/150 and just -1 DRS. I'm willing to concede, he was average in 2015.
  4. The other issue is that we may have Holt at 2B as well as Devers at 3B. Add to that JD at 1B or HRam coming off surgery, or someone like Duda... yuck! I'm okay with Devers at 3B, if we put together a much better line-up on offense. I'm not drooling over Moose either. He has a poor OBP and is an average fielder. I just like him more than Hosmer and Morrison on offense, and I think the improved defense at 3B tips the balance in his favor. I'd be happy with Santana, JD or Stanton.
  5. I disagree, but I'm not vehement about it. There is a sliver of hope we will compete for a playoff slot.
  6. Red Sox: 1. Hosmer (7/150) wtf??? I will literally puke, if we sign Hosmer.
  7. Not doubting your numbers, but where did you get the info?
  8. Maybe we'll finally see how a manager can "make a difference" in a positive way.
  9. Name 15 starting short stops that are worse fielders than Bogey. Now, if you want to claim the 11-20th best SSs are "average", you might have an argument by claiming Bogey is number 20, but to me, even that is a stretch, wishful thinking or homerism. Personally, I'd rank him around 23rd to 27th, based on the numbers. None of us have watched every SS play by every MLB SS. Devers still has upside. I get that. He's very young and has raw talent. I do think he can develop into a plus defensive 3Bman. My problem is concerning the time frame. We're in a 2-3 year window of having a superior chance at winning a ring. It's not an ideal time for "on-the-job-training." That's my biggest concern- not whether someday he may or may not become a plus defender or even average. I'm 100% positive Moose would be significantly better on defense than Devers in 2018 and most probably 2019 as well. That may not be reason enough to sign Moose over a 1Bman, but it is certainly something that should be factored in when making that choice.
  10. 2014: https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2014-mlb-cbssportscom-expert-predictions/ 1 out of 4 had us at 1st place (2 of 4 in second) Bleacher Report had us winning the wild card. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2008842-bleacher-reports-full-2014-mlb-season-preview-and-predictions
  11. Yes, I mentioned no Reed or Davis. I think we could have afforded EE and Nunez. (Like I said, this was in hindsight.)
  12. I wanted to trade Holt long ago. I think his piss poor offense this year was injury related, but I'd still rather have Hernandez & Lin over Holt in the infield. (Holt's best position is 2B, so maybe we hold onto him for two months, and he builds some trade value while playing at 2B and 4th OF'er for the first 2 months.
  13. They were working out Travis in LF in the Fall League, but he went home with a minor injury. Lin has played some OF. Holt will likely be on the 25 man roster, at least until Pedey returns.
  14. The guy doesn't even know Pedey is hurt for the first 2 months and Nunez is having surgery.
  15. I don't think DD figured his salary would have ended up that low. In hindsight, we could have not signed Moreland ($5.5M), traded Chris Young ($6.5M), not brought back Abad ($2M) and not traded for R Davis and Reed. I think with all that, we'd have snuck under the line. We'd also have had no 4th OF'er or decent replacement when Pedey went down.
  16. He is a much better glove than Devers. Devers was on pace for 45 errors this season. Moose has had just one negative UZR/150 from 2012-2017. From 2014-2016, he placed 15th out of 42 3Bmen in UZR/150 at +3.0. Devers placed 33rd out of 33 last year at -12.7. (Moose was 22nd at -3.6.) That's a significant upgrade any way you look at it.
  17. 2017 Red Sox Starting Pitchers Out of 82 AL starting pitchers with 70+ IP our starters placed.... ERA- 3. Sale 64 8. Pom 73 19. Price 84 27. ERod 93 42. Porcello 102 46. Fister 104 If you go by the top 15 are aces, the next 15 are number 2's and on and on, we had... 2 aces 2 number 2's 1 number 3 and a top number 4 in Fister.
  18. RIP, Doc. He threw 63 complete games from 2002-11. That was 30 more than any other pitcher in the same span.
  19. LOL! I keep doing that!
  20. 25 Man Roster Assuming we sign a big bat, most likely at 1B. here's a look at the 25 man roster situation (assuming no trades): (Opening day) 60 Day DL: Pedroia ERod (Thornburg?) 16 Locks- FA signing Betts Beni Bogey JBJ Devers HRam Vazquez Sale Price Pom Porcello Kimbrel Smith Kelly Barnes 6 Probables- Leon Hernandez Wright Maddox Scott Hembree (no options) Options for Last 3 Slots- Holt, Lin, Marrero Travis, Swihart, Brentz Workman, Taylot, Martin, Jerez Johnson, Velazquez, Beeks, Haley, Elias
  21. Good points. Shaw has led the league in games in 3 of the last 4 years, but he's always had less IP than appearances. I think he'll be fine, but you have given me reason for concern.
  22. Shaw and Lin have also been learning the OF.
  23. If JD signs elsewhere, I hope we go for Santana or Moustakas. Maybe we can sign Bryan Shaw and a decent 5th starter, too.
  24. Sounds like the whole EE situation. Everyone but DD was "interested."
