  1. Waiting for midseason means trading players or prospects for someone. If we don't sign JD, we should sign LoMo or Duda and maybe 1-2 other players.
  2. If he's that fragile, why would you want him here?
  3. He just had his best OPS in 5 years, at age 33. I'm not sure that's what to expect going forward. He's still a very good fielder and runner. Yes, he's worth "keeping around", and having a few vets mixed in with all the kids helps, but there are better players out there.
  4. Hoze has sucked on D for a while. Moose- just one year. Moose is not so up and down, but 2017 was a big year compared to the rest- although he did have one season with a .348 OBP.
  5. Agreed. And, when an OF'er rests or gets hurt, JD plays LF and HRam can DH. He could get about 400-450 this way and stay just below the vesting amount. 1B vs LHPs DH vs some RHPs. PH at times.
  6. If we want to get him, it might take that. I'd rather do 1 or 2.
  7. I know with Pedey out, we want "all hands on deck", and now we hear Marco might "need more time," but I wonder why we spent $2M on Holt when we have Lin, Marrero, Quiroz and eventually Marco on board.
  8. $We have about $33M to spend and stay under the severe penalty limit. We could maybe dump Holt $2M or some of HRam's $22M, but we'll probably want to save a few million for summer acquisitions. Could we do this, instead of signing JDM? $7M x 3 Watson $7M x 2 Nunez $6M x 2 Cashner $6M x 1 Duda or $10M x 3 Morrison $7M x 3 Watson $7M x 2 Nunez $4M x 1 Liriano
  9. 2018 was his first negative UZR/150 season. Was it a sign of what is to come or a blip? He did go up from +1.5 to +2.5 from '15 to '16, so I'm not sure I see a trend downwards. He was plus on DRS in 2015 and 2016 after being just negative in 2013 and 2014. Anyways, he'd be an upgrade on defense at 3B, if we moved Devers to DH. The .314 OBP is scary, but that .521 SLG could really help in the 5 or 6 slot.
  10. Yes, front loading would make it easier to trade him as he gets older.
  11. Scary. You will keep Warren, if you can. Losing CC and Gardner will not be that bad. Having $50M might get you two studs, if the prices keep falling.
  12. Make some easy, and maybe he'll bite: $100M/5 plus... $5M for MVP or $1M for top 5 MVP $2M for top 3 slugging% $2M for 600 PAs $1M more for 650 PAs $1M for showing up to ST'ing on time $1M for great leadership (just kidding)
  13. A lot depends on what AZ is or will offer JD. If they are offering $26M/1 or $50M/2, and he prefers that to $100M/5 or $105M/5, then so be it. I might try to offer more than AZ on a short deal, but he might not take it, unless it's way more. JD has a choice to make. If I was DD, I'd stick to my max value offer, which might be slightly higher than the offer out there right now. I would not go higher, unless the years got shorter.
  14. Makes sense to me, notin. Signing LoMo would probably mean we can only sign two of these three: Cashner or Liriano, Watson & Nunez. We could probably sign Duda plus the 3 and still stay under the $40M over penalty level. We'd have a major roster crunch, but I wouldn't be saddened to lose out- of- options Brentz, Marrero and Swihart or maybe Holt and save $2M. Signing 2 pitchers would put the squeeze on Hembree, Wright and Johnson, who are all out of options. 25 man roster with all 4 signed (Duda, Cashner, Watson & Nunez): SP (6): Sale, Price, Pom, Porcello, Wright (phanton DL?), Cashner RP (7): Kimbrell, Smith, Watson, Kelly, Barnes, Johnson, Hembree DL: ERod & Thornburg AAA: Velazquez, Elias, Beeks, Scott, Maddox, Workman C (2): Vaz & Leon (Swihart) AAA: Butler 1B/DH (3): Moreland, HRam, Duda AAA: Travis (Ockimey?) 2B (1): Nunez DL: Pedey & Marco AAA: Quiroz 3B (1): Devers AAA: Chavis SS (1): Bogey AAA: Lin IF Utility: Marrero & Swihart AAA: Holt LF (1): Beni CF (1): JBJ RF (1): Betts AAA: Castillo (Mars) Traded/DFA: Brentz
  15. Holt- Marrero (out of options)- Quiroz- Lin with an outside shot for maybe Swihart (yuck)? I hope Marco get ready quickly. I think he's our best shot at mediocrity.
  16. I'm only going by my impressions, but Sale looks like a fierce competitor. Plus, he gets the job done. He seems like a good leader to me, but we know very little about what goes on in the clubhouse, club flights and hotel rooms. It's hard to know, if we need better player leadership or not. I guess it can't hurt, but I think our biggest need is a legitimate clean-up hitter. It will lengthen our line-up and allow us to use Betts at lead-off (2nd- where I like him) or 3rd (where studies show he should not hit). 1. Bogey 2. Betts 3. Beni 4. JDM 5. Devers 6. HRam-Moreland 7. JBJ 8. Marco 9. Vaz Not only does JD vastly improve our 4 slot, moving HRam & Moreland to 6th will improve that slot and the 7-8 slots as well. Last year, HRam and Moreland batted 4th or 5th in 893 PAs (out of 1434) or 64% of the time! 4th: 535 out of 730 PAs HRam .747 OPS Moreland .691 OPS 5th: 358 out of 704 Moreland .764 HRam .773
  17. I am, too, but there's a zero percent chance he does nothing. He will spend $15-33M this season. ($33M brings us right to the severe penalty phase of the luxury tax.)
  18. I totally agree. Team over ownership and management, when it's the right thing to do, is ballsy and what true leaders do.
  19. Yes, and so does JD. The risk with Cobb might be 3-4 years not 5, and we can also sign LoMo or Duda+Nunez with Cobb, so the risk is spread out and for a shorter term.
  20. ***News flash*** Fenway is not an HR park, so your wild projected 35 HR total is way off, especially for a lefty. Although Hosmer is pretty good at going to LF, pitchers can and will pitch differently to him in Fenway-darring him to hit to RF's spacious area. Don't believe me? Look at the facts: Hosmer hits an HR 2.9% of his PAs (127/4393). At Fenway, he hits an HR 2.8% of his PAs (3/109). He had 0 HRs in 14 PAs last year. Your projection is a stab in the dark. Your claim that he's a good fielder in based on a dream. He is horrible on D and will only get worse. Apparently, he's good at scooping low throws- whoopdee-freakin-doo! We already signed a good fielding 1Bman, and we can't trade him until June. If we sign Hoze, it will be to DH, and he profiles even worse as a DH than a 1Bman. JD is way better as a DH, and he'll get 5 years not 7. He'll be the worst big ticket signing this year. It better not be by us. Using Gammons as a supporting argument actually helps my position. The last time Gammons was right was in the 80's.
  21. Okay, then name another DH who made more than $20M a year. Now, make it 5 years. Assuming the $100M/5 offer is accurate, I'm not sure I'd go above $105M/5 or $88M/4. If he chooses AZ, fine. We can sign Cobb & LoMo or Cobb, Duda & Nunez for the same money and less years and risk.
  22. There's room right now, but next winter some rule 5 guys will force your hand. It's a nice problem to have. You only have one albatross (Ellsbury), and you lose the $6M you're paying for McCann $ headley after this season.
  23. 31 1Bmen with 1500+ PAs since 2014 Power ranking (ISO) Hosmer 29th Slugging 18th (just .030 ahead of 29th) Defense UZR/150 16th out of 16 qualified 1Bmen at -1.9 25th out of 31 with 2,000+ innings Want confirmation? 25th out of 31 in DRS at -9 Hosmer is not even worth $30M/2. He's good at getting on base. That's it.
  24. He's worth $100M/5. We'd still have about $13M to spend. That's enough for Cobb or Lynn, or maybe Cashner & Watson.
