Here's another choice: put Pedey on the 60 day DL, so he doesn't rush himself into a re-injury.

Any word on who is being DFA'd or traded to make room for JD? Brentz? Marrero? Elias? Jerez? Shepher or Buttrey? Trade Holt? Pedey to 60 day DL?

Cots has us just barely under $230M, so we have about $7M to use on mid season call-up salary adjustments, bonuses and possible further acquisitions. We could possibly shed some salary, if needed, but trading one or more of these players (AVV salary listed): HRam: some portion of his $22M JBJ: $6.1M (acquire a solid SP'er mid-season?) In general, you don't look to trade players capable of "so much more". I could see us trading JBJ, if HRam looks strong and healthy. You basically be trading JBJ's bat for HRam's and probably getting a decent pitcher in return. (Note: I am not for trading JBJ, unless it is for someone very special.) Pedey's health is an issue, but I don't see a "bubble." Bogey will not be traded, even with Nunez looking for more playing time. Just my opinions.

We have no need for Brentz. JD can play LF whenever an OF'er gets hurt or needs a rest. That frees up a few PAs at DH for HRam. Playing JD in LF also squeezes some PAs from Nunez. If we really want Nunez to get 450-550 PAs, there's just no room for everybody. I can understand wanting to keep the depth, but I would not be surprised to see HRam dumped (maybe save $4-7M) or JBJ traded. We could trade Holt and save $2M. Adding Nunez and JD really puts a squeeze on several players, but it's not like the world ends, if we have to DFA or trade Brentz, Marrero, Swihart, Holt or Hernandez.

No, $60M/3 would suck, but it's better than $75M/3 remaining.

I think we save what little we have left for the summer. We have some 25-man roster crunch issues to solve before opening day. With Hembree and Johnson out of options, and Thornburg and ERod coming back at some point in the season, I think the pen we have now is what we go with to start the season. Wright, Johnson and Velazquez fight it for the 5 slot in the rotation.

Yes, and if HRam his hitting well, I doubt we restrict his PAs just so he does not vest. Yes, there will be injuries, but we also probably committed to Nunez to maximize his PAs. All it takes is an injury to any OF'er, 1Bman or DH to get HRam more PAs. Same with Nunez, but add 2B (Pedey) SS and 3B.

I'll do a complete analysis when everyone is signed officially, but going by cots and the reported salaries of JD, this is where we'll be: $208.6M including Nunez and player benefit payment $22M for JDM $230.6M total The major penalty limit is $237M. We'll want to keep a couple million for fluctuating player salaries due to call-ups and bonuses. I'd say we have about $4M to "play with."

Moreland plays 1B vs RHPs (or most of them). HRam plays 1B vs LHPs, DH's when JD plays OF and PHs some. He does not vest.

He could, but I don't think he does anything more than trading or DFA'ing Brentz. Here's how I see the new set-up... JD has only had more than 517 PAs once in his career. Let's assume he gets 600 as a DH and back-up OF'er. Beni slides to CF or RF when Betts and JBJ need rest. JD plays LF, whenever any OF'er needs rest. PAs Beni: 650 575 LF 50 CF 25 RF JDM 600 475 DH 125 LF HRam 425 200 DH vs RHPs 200 1B vs LHPs only 25 PH Moreland 525 500 1B (vs RHPs only) 25 PH (This leaves no room for Nunez to play LF or DH.) If we trade JBJ or Beni, we could give more PAs to Nunez and maybe 50 more for HRam (still keepimg him from vesting. For argument's sake, assume we trade JBJ for a pitcher... JDM 600 450 LF 150 DH Beni 650 CF Betts 700 RF HRam 475 200 1B vs LHPs 275 DH vs RHPs Moreland 525 450 1B 25 PH Nunez 600 250 DH 200 2B 50 LF 50 CF 50 3B/SS Or, something like this...

While JBJ is hard to project, if he can give us the offense he gave in 2015 or 2016, we'd get a big boost here as well.
