  1. It's not about equaling JD's cost; it's about staying under the $40M over the limit level. We're about $8M over now. Maybe after Nunez, we'll be $15M over. That leaves about $25M $14M x 4 for Cobb and $10M x 3 for Morrison would surely make it tight, but doable. If we can Holt, that adds $2M. If we can pawn off HRam and save $5-8M, we'll be set up to make a mid season deal, if needed.
  2. No way. We didn't bend over backwards to reset the luxury tax just so we could bring back Moreland and Nunez. There's just no freakin' way DD is done. Moreland and Nunez are minor deals. Big splash coming soon.
  3. How about wRC+ from 2015-2017: 109 Morrison, JBJ 107 Bogey 106 Nunez, HRam 100 Moreland 88 Holt
  4. While Nunez is just a 98 OPS+ career batter, he's been over 100 for 3 straight years. Holt's career OPS+ is 87 (86 in 2016 and 47 in 2017). While Nunez is not a good fielder at any position, kind of like Holt, he is better on defense than Devers at 3B and better in the OF than Holt. UZR/150 2B Holt 1.8 Nunez -17.5 3B Nunez -10.5 (much better the last 2 years) Holt -11.6 Devers -12.7 SS Holt 12.0 (only 212 innings) Nunez -18.3 LF Nunez 20.8 Holt -9.5 RF Holt 15.2 Nunez 7.0 OF Nunez 16.8 Holt -1.5
  5. I doubt Nunez affects the JD negotiations, except to maybe add more pressure on Boras and JD to sign before we move on. 1) It all but guarantees HRam does not vest (unless 2-3 guys get hurt) 2) It allows Pedey to ease up a bit. 3) It provide better but not plus defense at 3B, if needed (Devers could DH). 4) It allows us to deal Holt and knock $2M off Nunez's deal. 5) It allows Marco to recover and start in AAA. 6) It gives Cora the flexibility he could use. 7) Say good bye to Marrero (out of options). Give him a triple physical.
  6. I'd prefer Betts up second over first, but if we get a true clean-up hitter, I'm fine with Betts leading off. I'd go... 1) Bogey 2) Betts 3) Beni 4) JDM 5) Devers 6) Moreland v R/ HRam v L 7) JBJ 8) Marco/Pedey (Nunez?) 9) Vaz
  7. Okay, I get what you mean. I'm not sure I'd call JBJ young anymore, and I remember Beni making many bonehead plays- not so much JBJ.
  8. I'm not sure Vic, Napoli and Dempster were "big", but I guess combined, maybe. The biggest acquisition for the 2007 ring was from 2 winters beforehand (Beckett).
  9. Can you elaborate on this?
  10. I would not have paid $16M/2 plus incentives and a vesting option for Cashner, so I take back what I said about wanting to sign him.
  11. If one or two gets him, then even better.
  12. My guess is that DD is in touch with his plan B and C players' agents and will issue an ultimatum to JD, before his other option disappear.
  13. Or, JDM + Watson.
  14. From MLBTR... The Red Sox are continuing to monitor the market for outfielders, as Dave Dombrowski told reporters (including MLB.com’s Ian Browne and NBCSports.com’s Evan Drellich), and they haven’t given any type of deadline to J.D. Martinez or other free agents for signing with the team. Dombrowski admitted that the team intended to have more lineup options in place by this point (“From a positional player perspective, no, that wasn’t, per se, our plan“) but noted that even a normal offseason is hard to predict, and this winter’s free agent freeze has made things particularly unusual. The lack of free agent activity has led to more trade talks, Dombrowski said, as teams are trying to prepare themselves if and when any of these free agents eventually come off the board.
  15. Me, too, and I agree on the after 2016 part as well.
  16. I loved the low risk Napoli signing that was incentive laden. I also really loved the Uehara deal. I hated the length of Vic's deal and thought Dempter was a gross overpay for a 5th starter. Plus, I hate signing 5th starters (Masterson). Yeah, there wasn't a lot of buzz, and certainly after a last place finish, those names did not make anyone feel like we were about to become champs, but it was more buzz than now.
  17. Now, do the JF supporters understand why he was let go?
  18. I agree, although there might have been a better way to demonstrate the team's disgust.
  19. True, but we did have a few notable things to talk about, like Vic, Napoli and Dempster.
  20. I was being sarcastic. If a leader has to tell the world he is a leader, then something is wrong.
  21. I can't see MN or WSH joining the bidding, unless the price goes down. It only goes down, if the Sox drop their offer.
  22. The argument is over. We have a leader. He told us so himself.... “For whatever people say from the outside — ‘We don’t have a leader’ — I’m standing right here,” he said. “I’ve been here for a long time. We’re in first place. That’s it." http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/columnists/steve_buckley/2017/07/buckley_dustin_pedroia_proclaims_himself_the_leader_but_his
  23. I'd rather have LoMo, but if we end up with both or JD, I'm okay with it, but I still think we need more power from the 1B position.
  24. I'm always good with adding pitchers at or near the top of our rotation, so I'm listening. I'd like to see the cost, and I still think we need a clean-up hitter.
  25. Even if he's a "dump", if he's any good, it will cost a prospect or two.
