Okay, let's say Leon was picked up by the Rays, and is immediately used primarily with 2 starting pitchers. How many starts would you think it takes for him to get near the level he got with Sale and Price? I know Price got off to a rough start with the Sox in 2016, but he did end up with much better numbers with Leon by year's end. Chris Sale saw his WHIP improve just about every month of his first year with the Sox. I'm not saying this is proof of anything, but I think it takes at least a couple months to build a tight relationship. Yes, some are better than others at building that tightness quickly.

No, they are pretty plentiful, but it takes time for a catcher and pitcher to build a great relationship, so it's probably not a good idea to continuously change your catcher-pitcher combinations.

That is certainly a possibility. I'm thinking GMs probably did not want to start fresh with a new catcher and wait out the learning curve or "comfort" building period. Add to that the $2.5M price tag, at a time when similar catchers were being signed for a fraction of that cost, and it's easy to think maybe GMs wanted Leon, but they just didn't think the timing or budget hit were worth the trouble. Just my opinion in response to those saying that because no GM claimed him, he is not valued.

$2.5M is a lot for a catcher- any catcher. Leon's strength is how he builds a comfort level with a few starting pitchers. That takes time. I disagree that no team claiming him means he has little value to us or other teams.

It takes time for a catcher to build up to a comfort level that makes a significant difference. Just because a team decided it did not want to pay $2.5M and then wait out a learning curve, does NOT mean no team wanted him or finds him valuable.

I get your point, but Vaz was clearly their first choice--only his injury got in the way. To me, "primary" means the team's first choice.

#1One could argue Vaz was the starter. Leon caught more games only because Vaz got hurt. Vaz also started almost every playoff game. #5 Maybe teams did not want to pay Leon, but still wanted him.

Some seem to. I keep hearing how others have higher offensive "potential," but I;m not sure any of our catchers will ever duplicate Leon's 2017 season of an .845 OPS. Potential is one thing, but actually doing it is another. (Note: I like Swihart and Vaz's bat better, but I'm with MVP. I don't care about catcher hitting.)

The rotation does suck. I have no problem saying it. I'd say, "They have sucked this year," but I would not say the "do suck."

I'm not so sure the problem is all that "deep." It could just be a slow start, perhaps due to a light ST'ing workload, and maybe we'll see a rounding into form very soon. (Fingers crossed.)

Red Sox ace Chris Sale isn’t one for excuses, but skipper Alex Cora did offer up a possible explanation for Sale’s otherwise concerning recent velocity drop. The star lefty was dealing with illness in the run-up to his last start, which reduced his intra-start work and may also have affected him on gameday, Cora told reporters including Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com (Twitter links). Sale’s velocity has trended back up in the first inning of today’s game, which is certainly a promising sign. There was also generally encouraging news for southpaw Brian Johnson, who was feared to have suffered a significant elbow injury. He’s actually just dealing with inflammation, so it seems reasonable to hope that a rest and rehab approach will allow him to get back to the mound in relatively short order.

11 Yankess on the IL! Luis Severino’s recent MRI revealed a Grade 2 lat strain that will cause the righty to be shut down from throwing for the next six weeks, the Yankees announced to reporters (Twitter link via Newsday’s Erik Boland). The lat injury is a new development that is unrelated to the previous bout of shoulder inflammation from which Severino was working his way back. This new injury, it seems, was sustained while Severino was rehabbing his shoulder.

Best to worst OPS year (200+ PAs) by our catchers (since 2015): .845 Leon (283) in 2017 .735 Vaz (345) in 2017 .712 Swihart (309) in 2015 .644 Leon (301) in 2017 .613 Swihart (207) in 2018 .540 Vaz (269) in 2018 .511 Leon (288) in 2018 Leon has the best, the middle and the worst. We tend to remember the most recent.

We're only like 3-4 games behind the wild card slot. We need to relax. Yes, we have played horribly, but we are not a bad or even average team.

I definitely agree with this and the whole "comfort level" argument, but I doubt Sale throws 8 mph harder with Leon today.

Actually, just Sale and Price and a couple veteran RP'ers have a significant sample size and a proven track record of better performance with Leon. SCM33's point about Sale's velocity is valid. I've been a big supporter of keeping Leon on the 25 man roster, but now that the choice has been made, I think we have to play it out a while longer (much longer) to give Swihart his chance, once and for all.

The image of Mirabelli being escorted into Fenway comes to mind, but I think we are a long way from calling Leon up, unless someone get legitimately hurt.
