    When the underage girl is all gah gah over the "statutory rapist," is getting massive payments and is consenting, it's not likely she'd press charges. Context is needed in all cases like this.

    They never really replaced Porcello's fully. Price gave us 107 IP last year and has averaged about 120 per year over the last 3 years- still very significant, but not a ton. It's his level of performance in those 120 that will be harder to match (122 ERA+)

    I don't know, for sure, but it makes sense there would be. If not, Castillo could file a grievance.

    To me, that's the only explanation. At the time, I felt they already had a deal in place. I love JBJ, but paying him $11M makes little sense. They probably could have non-tendered and then signed him for $12M/2.

    They can find an all glove-no bat CF'er easily, but you may be right about keeping JBJ. I'm just thinking his salary lost would add a lot to what we could get for pitching. It's just one year, and we wouldn't get much for JBJ, so he will likely be staying, at least until the deadline.

    If we get a pitcher, depending on his AVV, we might be able to call Castillo up in June or July at the prorated price.

    But, a lot of Betts shirts being bought in LA. We'll see Devers shirts on the rise.

    Agreed, just like Price helping us win that ring makes his signing tolerable. If the Dodgers win with Betts, I think we become the faves to sign him. ($380M/11)

    I thought about Toronto as a dark horse, too..... I like our chances against the Mets, Nats and Jays, but the Dodgers can outbid us, if they want. If they win a ring, they may pass, but if not, it won't look good losing Betts and 3 young players and nothing else really big on the market.

    Assuming Betts does not sign an extension. Who will be the serious bidders? Probably not the Cubs or Giants. I'm not sure the Yankees will go large and long, but it would be a knife in the back of all Sox fans. The Dodger, yes. The Braves and Padres? Hmm... St. Louis? Colorado? The Angels? Houston? Texas? Toronto? I'm not seeing anyone but the Dodgers than make a stronger case than Boston to sign Betts. It appears he loved it here. To me, it's all about Henry's view on the long term budget and large and long contracts and Blooms position on such types of deals. How hard, if at all, will he push Henry for the money to make a mega offer. It would certainly shake Red Sox Nation to sign him and have Verdugo, Downs and Wong plus the Price savings to boot.

    I cheated and added some from the AAA roster I thought might compete for a job. (I should have noted who they were.) They did list 27, not counting Pedey.

(We might even get some cash to pay part of some deals listed) KC Danny Duffy (30) owed $30.75M/2 but just $13M on lux tax line Ian Kennedy (34) owed $16.5M/1 but $14M on lux tax line (We could trade JBJ for one or both and still be under the tax.) BAL (Big gamble) Alex Cobb (32): $29M/2 and $14.25M x 2 on lux NY Mets Jacob deGrom (31-we don't have the pieces): $128M/4 but just $21.8M x 4 lux Noah Syndergaard (26): $9.7M + 1 arb Steven Matz (28): $5M + 1 arb SF (Huge risk) Johnny Cueto (34) $47M/2 and $21.7M x 2 lux

    Why not sign Betts? An OF of beni, Betts & Verdugo is pretty damn good. The IF might be Moreland (Chavis/Dalebec) at 1B, Down (Peraza/Chavis) at 2B, Devers at 3B and Bogey at SS. We'd still need some pitching, but with a clean slate on taxes, and JBJ dropping off the rolls, we might be able to afford Betts and a SP'er and not come close to the $40M line.

    MLBTR... So, why do the deal? Not long ago, Bloom says, he expected to keep Betts for 2020. But “teams stepped forward” with increased offers over the course of the offseason. The ultimate package achieved constitutes a “major step forward” for the Boston organization’s future, in Bloom’s view.

    I'll admit, I was one who said he's probably one of the best pitchers to come along and if we were going to ever spend big and long for a SP'er, he was as good a bet as any. I knew the years were way too long. I feared the last 3 years. zI knew the cost was high but somewhat expected. To me, he was a big let down. (I never liked the CC signing, so I wasn't let down by that deal.) We essentially paid Price $44M x 4 years. That's like how we essentially paid Renteria over $30M for 1 year but times 4 years! (BTW, there's a sizable group of posters here that think we should not have dumped Price at that cost. They actually think LA either wanted Price at $48M/3.)
