  1. Look at the 40 man roster. I see about 18 guys that will almost certainly be here next year. Maybe 5-7 more will likely be here. Maybe 3-5 of the rest wilkl still be here. That leaves about 10-12 openings. I'm thinking, "Why not?" He kills RHPs, and we may need a DH and 1Bman, next year. If we think he won't be selected, we may not protect him, but I don't see anyone in danger of being selected by us keeping Ockimey, instead.
  2. It's really a shame as he was on his way to a career year before the injury. He admitted he tried to rush back too quickly. You may be right about non tendering him, but the Sox did get a short look at the end of the year and may have seen something encouraging. His velocity was very low, but he only pitched in 2 games in September.
  3. 2020 Forty Man Roster Look (Listed by seniority on the 40 man roster) Red= May not be on 40 Man Roster next year Pedroia (Can place on 60 day IL next year) Vazquez Bradley (May be non tendered or traded) Workman Bogaerts Betts (May be traded) Hembree (May be non tendered or traded) Barnes Rodriguez Johnson (May be traded) M Hernandez Price Benintendi Sale Velazquez (May be traded) Travis (May be traded) Lin Devers Martinez (May opt out or be traded) Poyner (May be traded or non tendered) Walden Brasier Eovaldi Brewer Chavis Lakins Taylor DHernandez Reyes Leon (may be traded or non tendered) Weber Shawaryn Kelley Cashner Centeno JChacin Rule 5 Christopher Acosta Fabian Andrade Yoan Aybar Roldani Baldwin Eduard Bazardo Gary Calvo Marino Campana Pedro Castellanos Rusney Castillo CJ Chatham Jake Cosart Ricardo Cubillan Bobby Dalbec Enmanuel De Jesus Chad De La Guerra Jhonathan Diaz Jerry Downs Devon Fisher Matthew Gorst Kyle Hart Trenton Kemp Matt Kent Adam Lau Nick Lovullo Everlouis Lozada Tate Matheny Samuel Miranda Oddanier Mosqueda Josh Ockimey Angel Padron Yorvin Pantoja Keibert Petit Roniel Raudes Austin Rei Hildemaro Requena Jeremy Rivera Kleiber Rodriguez Jake Romanski Jagger Rusconi Alberto Schmidt Andrew Schwaab Nick Sciortino Kevin Steen Cole Sturgeon Kervin Suarez Luke Tendler Josh Tobias Marcus Wilson
  4. We have a good chance at getting a lot younger, next year. Here were our oldest players this season: 36 Pearce- gone 35 Pedroia- not part of our long term plans 34 Wright- gone 33 Moreland- gone 33 Price- 3 years undercontract 32 Nunez- gone 32 Cashner- gone 31 Holt- likely gone 31 JD- may opt out or be traded 31 Gorkys Hernandez- gone 31 R Brasier- probably not part of our long term plans 31 Josh Smith- gone 31 J Chacin- who knows? 30 Porcello- likely gone 30 Leon- maybe gone
  5. Never say "always." Verlander's last deal worked out. Scherzer is 35. Greinke's deal does not look all that bad. He's 36. Lester. Some of the shorter deals given to old pitchers have worked great. Clemens in 2005. Sure, there's a longer list of failures, but "always" is a strong word.
  6. Luck does play a role, and sometimes teams that played poorly most of the year get it together or make a big trade and actually get better than their record indicates, but the larger aspect of who wins is who is better. The better teams have a better chance of winning a 5 or 7 game series.
  7. That just can't be true. Show me that data. (Look, I mentioned wins are not necessarily the best way to set the true rankings of who were the best teams making the playoffs, but the numbers I presented alone, shows a very cleat correlation between season wins and postseason wins. The numbers are clear.)
  8. I think we non tender or trade JBJ and maybe Hembree. We go into 2020 just under the line, and if we look like we might compete, we might add some salary and go for it. If we look bad, we'll trade JD & Betts in July. This plan might also sell more season tickets.
  9. We might be able to trade JD, Betts & JBJ for some decent ML ready and younger talent and then makes some free agent signings that are either to bridge us to the rebuilt team or are part of the longer term future. We could spend just enough to reset and be pretty good- certainly not as good as a team with a healthy Betts, JD and JBJ but still pretty good.
  10. Why it's Brian Johnson! Or, Hector Velazquez. Or, DHern, Shawaryn or Houck. Somebody was swearing Weber was the man after one start.
  11. It's not a no brainer. Him getting hurt would have destroyed any chance we had. Yes, NL parks in the OF is okay. Had we known Moreland AND Pearce would get hurt, then maybe, just maybe, we should have had him practice 1B. If he played 1B and got hurt, it would be like JF & Wright all over again here on this site. Book it.
  12. 1) We could trade JD, if he opts in, so it's not all about JD's decision. It could be about the Sox decision on moving him. 2) I'm thinking, if JD is gone, there should be less need not more for JBJ. It would mean we are looking at a rebuild and reset. Keeping JBJ does not fit into that plan. (Yes, I know we can reset by keeping JBJ, if JD is not back, but it would still be a waste keeping a $10M one year player. Instead, use the budget space to look for some strategic FA signings at relatively low or moderate prices that will still allow us to sign Betts or someone else after 2020.)
  13. I thought the idea of giving JD a first baseman's mitt made some sense, but with a Moreland-Pearce platoon set up and lots of depth at 1B, I didn't think it was worth exposing JD to an injury for such a minimal gain. The things is, we move JD to 1B, we have no hitter well suited to be the DH. JD's history screams to be a DH. We need him healthy.
  14. I really like Dalbec- probably more than most here. I'm even okay with moving Devers to 1B to allow Dalbec to get a shot at 3B in 2020, but I don't think that will happen. I'm only for trading him for someone equally young and promising, but who plays 2B, 1B, OF or pitches.
  15. His highest value is at 3B, and I seriously doubt the Sox want to force Devers to learn a new position (1B). In theory, Dalbec's value is higher for a team with a weak 3B. I'm not for giving Dalbec away. I'm not for trading this prospect for an aging vet. I'm for making a sideways move that brings back equal value at a position of higher need to the Sox. (Equal also means equal years of low cost team control.)
  16. Yes, 2020. I went back and changed it. We aren't getting Cole. I doubt we trade JD to make room for another big signing, unless we stay under the tax line, too.
  17. That's how I see it, although it's no sure thing we bring Betts back after a reset. IMO, we should trade JD, Betts and JBJ plus maybe some players that will be FAs after 2021, reset the tax and go for Betts and others after 2020. By trimming the budget by a lot, we could also look to sign a free agent or two this winter, keeping us under the tax line, but with an eye on rebuilding for 2021 and beyond. (Nothing mega, but a few helpful moves to fill anticipated holes in 2021- 1B, 2B, Pen, SP...)
  18. I thought the idea was so lop-sided, he meant Beni for Mancini.
  19. I think it makes more sense to just trade Dalbec, like you suggested before. He's got to be worth more to a team needing a 3Bman than to us at 1B. To those about to jump on me for trading prospects, I'm only for trading him for a young player who has about as much control as Dalbec. Maybe Johnson + Dalbec for a better SP'er. Assuming JD is gone, we might see this: 1B: Ockimey, Chavis, Travis (cheap FA?) 2B: Chavis, Marco, Chatham, Lin DH: Ockimey, Chavis, Fat Beni
  20. If JD opt out or is traded after opting in, I think we should give up on 2020 and trade others, including JBJ & Betts.
  21. Now that they reset, we'll see if this is true or not.
  22. Thanks. The 6 year period from 2010 to 2015 showed signs of parity taking over, but that waas it. 2015 1KCR 5NYM 2014 5SFG 4KCR 2013 1BOS 1STL 2012 3SFG 7DET 2011 4STL 2TEX 2010 2SFG 4TEX 7 out of 12 teams were ranked 3 or lower, and half the WS winners were not 1-2 in their leagues that year. Even then, their were 6 of them and 4 of the 1-2's, so even breaking even is not equal odds.
  23. I wish they were better, so when we beat their asses, it counts for something. With Georgia's loss, our strength of schedule took a hit.
  24. It's the steroids in the Yankee clubhouse drinking fountain. Nobody believe me.
  25. Sorry to break the bad news: Gorkys Hernandez, Josh Smith and Chris Owings elected for free agency rather than accept their demotion to AAA. What are we to do?
