I'm thinking maybe expectations for bold moves were too high.
If we are looking to reset, I'm not sure about rushing into deals is a sound strategy.
I'm pretty certain Bloom has a numbers of deals in the works- probably some already accepted by the other team, but he is waiting on other shoes to fall first.
I loved Burks.
I can understand why Clemens was not extended, and I'm glad he wasn't here when he got busted for PEDs. Plus, they guy is a creep. (He got away with some hanky-panky with an underage girl.)
Boggs in a Yankee uniform was indeed a sad site to see.
All that history really highlights how great it has been since Henry took over and changed the whole Sox image.
Notice I did not post this on the realistic thread.
(Note: the last Dodger dump involved 8 players plus cash changing teams.)
One that is maybe doable:
Betts & Price (+$3M)
for
AJ Pollock, Maeda & Downs
Trade:
Price ($32M x 3/ $31M on Lux Tax)
Eovaldi ($17M x 3/ $17M LT)
Betts (~$28M last arb)
JBJ (~$11M last arb)
Chavis (pre-arb)
Walden (pre-arb)
+$1M a year x 3 yrs
for
Pederson (~$9M last arb) Maybe flip him to another team later
AJ Pollock ($17M x 3/ $12M Lux tax)
K Maeda ($3.1M x 4/ $3.1M LT)
Joe Kelly ($8.3M x 2/ $8.3M LT)
Josiah Gray (Pitching prospect)
Total Money:
Sox get:
$37.4M in 2020 but $33M Lux Tax (counting the $1M we send per year)
drops $9M in 2021 (Pederson) and another $8.3M in 2022 (Kelly)
LAD gets
$87M in 2020 and $86M on Lux Tax
drops $39M in 2021 (Betts & JBJ)
To me, yes.
It could be exciting to watch Devers, Bogey, Vaz and a bunch of rising stars, but only if I thought we were heading for something special 2-3 years down the road.
I was thinking more about them waiting to see if another deal can happen with another team, of if they miss out on a FA SP'er they are currently pursuing.
String bean or not, Price was a horse when we signed him.
Before we signed him, he had these numbers:
469 IP in his previous 2 seasons- most in MLB
208+ IP in 4 of his previous 5 seasons (with 187 in the fifth)
27+ starts in 5 straight seasons (31+ in 4 of 5)
Previous 4 season totals:
63-30 2.90 (133 ERA+)
2.90 FIP
8.9 K/9 (4.98 K/BB)
1.087 WHIP
He then led the AL in IP in his first year with the Sox at age 30 (230 IP)
2014-2016 IP Leaders
699 Price
677 Scherzer
675 Cueto
673 Kluber
662 Bumgarner
637 Samardzija
627 Lester
I don't blame you, but as a Sox fan with an eye on budget costs, I'm glad the Yanks signed Cole for mega bucks. I'm thinking the long term negative effects will out weight the short term gains you likely will see.
