  1. Sale and ERod gave us zero in 2020, so they can't really get worse, unless they both pitch at a 5.50 ERA or worse. Losing JBJ and gaining Renroe looks to be a minus, but who knows how well or poorly JBJ will do in 2021. Let's have this conversation after we add a few more players.
  2. Yankee Rotation on opening day: Cole 30: Solid, durable & great Kluber 35: 37 IP the last 2 seasons Montgomery 28: 75 IP the last 3 seasons German 28: 143 IP the last 2 seasons Garcia 21: 34 IP, last year. (111 IP in minors in 2019: 4.28 ERA/1.347 WHIP) King 25:30 IP MLB in last 2 seasons (24 IP in 2019 minors: 5.48 ERA/ 1.239 WHIP) (IL) Severino 26: 12 IP the last 2 seasons. Excellent beforehand. Yankee IP leaders 2019 (SP'ers) 182 Tanaka 4.45 161 Happ 4.91 151 Paxton 3.82 142 German 4.03 107 Sabathia 4.95 69 Green 4.17 2020: 73 Cole 2.84 49 Happ 3.47 48 Tanaka 3.56 44 Montgomery 5.11 34 Garcia 4.98 20 Paxton 6.64 27 King 7.76 (13 IP in relief) Tanaka, Happ, Paxton and CC totaled over 592 IP in 2019 (76% of SP'er IP). Tanaka, Happ and Paxton totaled 118 IP in 2020 (40% of SP'er IP).
  3. Angels to sign Quintana. Looks like Odorizzi is the only guy left, for us, IMO.
  4. Agreed, but adding Kluber while losing Tanaka, Paxton and Happ is not an improvement. They have as many questionable starters as we do. Some are young with a lot of potential, but we all know how that can work out. They are not done, but if they are being truthful about staying under the tax line, they have less than $6M left to spend to our $30M. They kill us in pen comps, but our rotation is close, assuming health, and that's before our expected addition. Our offense is close. Our defense sucks. Our pen is way behind.
  5. More likely, Hernandez would be part of the 2B mix, and yes, Chavis should be traded, and our 4th OF'er. Depending on how well Arroyo or Chavis do, and if we have Beni or some other OF'er, Hernandez could become our FT 2Bman or CF'er- NOT both.
  6. Our healthy rotation also compares to the Yanks rotation. Maybe not better, but not all that worse, either, especially if Sale can come close to Cole. Our offense was fine, last year, despite down seasons from several key players- like JD, Beni & Devers. If most of our players just return to their better form of 2019 or 2020, not to mention 2018, we could make massive gains in win totals. That's with no additions and just decent health. That's the optimist view. There is plenty to worry about, too, and some key additions can help put some of those to rest.
  7. Every team has many "ifs." I'm not disagreeing with your point. We seemed to have more than our fair share of injuries and "bad years" from too many players. Expecting a return to the norm is something that is probable not just wishful. We are also not done setting our opening day roster. I'm convinced we will make some significant additions. We should easily pass the O's (no biggie) and come closer to the rest of the AL East than we were in 2020. Only the Jay s seem to have improved by more than us, on paper, so far. The Yanks appear to want to stay under the tax line, so they have much less "budget space" than we do- going forward. They also lost Tanaka, Paxton & Happ. We lost JBJ. The sky is not falling on Sox Nation.
  8. Kike could fill the CF & 2B role or 2B/4th OF'er. Yes, Moreland will likely get closer to $3M than 4 or 5.
  9. TB and the O's have gotten worse. NYY has still lost more than they've gained. We might be even, as of now. TOR has gotten better.
  10. Yes. I agree. $13-15M SP $6-8M solid RP $3-5M RP $3-5M CF $3-5M 2B $3-5M Moreland?
  11. I could see us spending to a point just under the tax line, but if we are in the race at the deadline, we might spend enough to end up over the line. Likely? Maybe not- but possible.
  12. I'm thinking he gets $15M/2 or $20M/3. I wouldn't go that high.
  13. Yes, and even with the small moves we've made, it's more positive than the O's and Rays, so far, for 2021. Hopefully, we spend the $30M wisely. We shouldn't just sign the best players on the market, because they are better than the others. Most felt CC was the best OF'er available, Pablo was better than Headley and on an on... If most of the players some posters have been clamoring for us to sign end up being duds, will they remember being upset when we "let them go?" I remember one poster going nutty over our need to sign Hosmer. Yes, we need a SP'er and closer, but are the ones already signed by others really the ones to lead us to vast improvement? Sure, the list of available players is shrinking quickly, but there is enough left to move us up in the standings. There are also trade possibilities.
  14. A lot of money. We could have used him, but I can't see paying that much.
  15. Depends what we get for Beni. If we get a pitcher and then sign Renfroe, we'd be better off.
  16. Liam Hendriks signs with CWS. The closer will receive a $1MM signing bonus, $11MM in 2021, $13MM in 2022, $14MM in 2023, and then the $15MM option/buyout for 2024. The option will automatically vest if Hendriks is traded.
  17. Feel free to add to anyone significant I'm missing... Tampa: Lost: N Lowe, Snell & Morton Gained: Luis Patino, M Wacha, F Mejia NYY: Lost:Tanaka, Paxton, Happ Gained: Kluber TOR: Lost: Gained: Chatwood (Yates? Springer?) BAL: Lost: Gained: BOS: Lost: JBJ Gained: Renfroe, Andriese, Whitlock Has anyone improved, overall?

  19. Not great, but I think we are worse, now. Alex Wilson turned our pretty good. Here is the 2012 roster (more than 40 listed) https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2012-roster.shtml Here's the 49 players who were on our 2018 team's 40 man roster at some point: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2017-roster.shtml These only list players who played- not AAAA or minor leaguers on the 40 man roster.
  20. I haven't seen a weaker Sox bottom-of-the-40-man-roster in decades. (30 or 31 to 40- maybe even 27 to 40.) Since Bloom is known for finding "gems in the rough," I expected this area to be improved by more than it has, and no, it shouldn't take a lot of money to build slots 30-40.
  21. We'll never get far enough to have to trade or DFA my list of 4. My point was our roster is weak beyond the bottom 7. It goes 8-11 deep and maybe even farther.
  22. If we added 8 players and DFA'd the 7 on your list plus one from mine, I wouldn't be upset. We may end up sending Whitlock back, despite having tons of roster space. Valdez could be a flash in the pan. I'm not confident he's anything better than a replacement level player. Payamps, to be honest, I'm not even sure why we added tis guy. Arauz is young and looks good on D. He's borderline, but if we sign a 2Bman, one of Chavis, Arroyo or Arauz should go, one way or another. The only reason the 4 guys on my list aren't on your list is because we'll never need to replace 8-11 players on the 40 man roster. We may sign 2-4 players and trade for 2-3 players (without giving up a 40 man player) and still never get to my list.
  23. Many of us knew we were resetting, last winter. We never expected anything major all winter long.
  24. Couldn't the same thing be accomplished by limiting his pitch count every 5th day? Pitchers are used to a set routine. I wouldn't mess with it.
  25. Now= Today to mid February?
