I agree, but fans judge GMs almost entirely in hindsight- fair or not, and the fact that so many of those traded prospects have flamed out, got hurt or have yet to prove greatness has created the belief that all was good. Take one trade in isolation: Pom for Espinoza. Pom did well for us in one year, but did not contribute to a ring. Espinoza has been hurt, so the trade looks good or at worst a push, but one can imagine us trading Espinoza for another player with 4-5 years of team control that could still be helping us, now. The equation should not only be looked at as trade made vs no trade made.

So true. A splurge may not be on 1-2 studs, though. I could see us getting 1-2 mid-ranged players, this winter and 3-5 next winter. Spending a lot but not on just 1-2 guys.

He had to start somewhere with such a limited budget, and our 40 man roster was only about 18 players deep, when he took over. Let's see what he does with the larger spending budget, this winter. BTW, with all the trades and free agents to be, we're still only about 18 deep on our 40 man. Further deeping our 40 man roster might be the main task for this winter, while improving quality might be next winter's main task.

We don't know what limits Henry has placed on future spending. For all we know, Bloom not be able to go over the tax line, again, this year or be limited to not going more than $20M over. If the plan is to start being serious contenders in 2022 and beyond, it might make sense to make 2022 year one of the tax and "splurge" next winter not this one.

He did pretty well with the low draft picks he had. He sucked at IFA signings. The Moncada cost was huge, and we pretty much gave that money away along with Moncada, Kopech and others to get Sale. The jury is still out on many of the prospects he traded, but a large amount have not lived up to expectations. He kept Devers, and that was smart.

I stated that some of those traded were certainly not top 20 prospects at the time of the trade, and many went on to do very little or got hurt, but the fact is, he traded away many of our best hopes. Of course, and losing Betts, but I think trading Betts and Price was forced on him.

Perez, Plawecki, Valdez, Munoz and a couple others look like good additions, considering he had such a tiny spending budget.

or even end up being a plus in any way, but maybe one or two will. I'm looking at this winter as the "real start" of Bloom's legacy.

There are plenty of ex-Sox players I wish we never parted with. He was one. I wish we had Margot and Buttrey back, but no more than someone similar to them.

I'm not counting them out. If any team can comeback, it's the Rays.

If they win, it was all worth it. It seems like they have been in overkill mode for several years, now, which makes DD's success in 2018 all the more noteworthy. As much as he did, it was still never a sure bet, but it worked, so I am thankful. Now, we pick up the pieces and move towards our next ring.

Yes. I've never said he didn't. He built the greatest Sox team in history. He also traded the future to do it. It's okay to think someone did an overall okay to good job but left severe consequences. I was fine with the trade-off and still am, but I'm not going to sugar coat the fact that the cliff was and still is real. At the time, I argued he went to far ("overkill"), but to win it all, sometimes you need to think and act that way. Had we not won the ring is 2018, I'd be blasting away at DD's legacy.

There's only 26 allowed on the roster, and this is likely their opening day projection. They project Ward to start in AA. I doubt any of those 3 make the roster before June/July.

I don't hate or love ex-Sox players. Sometimes, I think the fixation some people have over them is a little overboard- both good and bad. I rarely want to get an ex-Sox player back, but it's not out of any dislike due to them leaving, even if by choice. One case that really bugged me was the Masterson love affair. For the most part, especially in the last 15-20 years, the players who have left us were for a good reason and it worked out well, for us.

The Nunez deal was a good one- not the re-signing. Walden did very well for us. He drafted pretty well with such bad picks.

The only pitcher he signed for more than near minimum was Perez, and he did fine. The rest were all minor league types. A few might stick: Valdez, Mazza and maybe 1 or 2 others.

...and even small market teams make extensions like that, although they often back end load them and trade the player after a few years.

While the Bogey extension was not "small market," it was team-friendly.

Only because Espinoza had TJS. Pom didn't really help us win a ring. His best year was not 2018.

Claimed Doug Fister off waivers Signed Marcus Walden to minor league deal 2018: Signed Ryan Brasier to minor league deal (did great) Traded Quiroz for Brewer Traded Deven Marrero for Josh Taylor Signed Ryan Weber 2019: Traded Blake Swihart for Marcus Wilson Unlike small market teams, DD had mostly low draft picks, but did pretty good with them: 2016: Dalbec, Groome, Chatham, Shawaryn, K Hart 2017: Houck 2018: Casas (our #1 prospect), Ward, Duran, Feltman 2019: Lugo & Song I'd say there were some decent "small market type" moves by DD. The lack of any meaningful IFA signings hurt us badly.
