  1. Taylor is off the board.
  2. The funny thing is, all these guys have options remaining, except Brice, who may be the worst or 2nd worst of the group, so YES, add 2-3 RP'ers and use the bottom 3 as AAA depth. As we know, teams usually use 16-22 RP'ers during a full season usually 8-12 with significant innings. I'd rather use Brewer, Brice and Springs as our 9-11th RP'ers than our 6-8th. Other AAA depth RP'ers might be Walden, Bazardo, Shawaryn, Feltman, Poyner or Mazza/Weber/Mata/Seabold/Hart
  3. Funny, yes, but I knew a kid who swore it was, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy."
  4. I might give any 2 from Chavis, Chatham or Groome for Wheeler $4M a year.
  5. I like the new photo. I have to think we are positioned to spend more than many other teams, but most of those teams are below us on the projected WAR rankings, already. My guess is, we can climb to #9-10- maybe 7-8, if we go over the tax line. That puts us in playoff contention but maybe not high ring contention.
  6. ERod may say he's fine, but he will likely be pampered. Eovaldi is almost always out for some or long periods of time. making him the closer may be the best idea. Sale may not be back until July or August. Pivetta could surprise, but we need a plan B. Houck will likely be on a strict pitch and inning count for 2021. He may spend some time in AAA to lengthen his years of team control. Mazza, Seabold and Mata offer some depth, at some point in the season- maybe as "openers". Let's add up the expected months each of the top 5 will pitch: ERod 5-6, Eovaldi 2-5, Sale 1-3, Pivetta 4-6, Houck 3-5= 15-25 months. Let's say 21. That's 3.5 starters total. Expecting Mazza, Seabold and Mata to fill those 48 starts and keep us competitive is asking a lot. If we end up with 15-18 months, it means we have 2.5 to 3 starters total. IMO, we need to add 2 solid & durable SP'ers and maybe one AAA type. If we move Eovaldi to the pen add one more.
  7. What if Philly pitched in $3-5M per year?
  8. I could see us signing Lester & Porcello and a couple RP'ers, but if we move Eovaldi to closer, we may need one more legit SP'er.
  9. Agreed, but I still think we need at least 1 more SP'er for depth, if we want to contend. Maybe a AAAA type.
  10. I'm not counting on ERod in April. If he's healthy the 3rd guy becomes our 6th starter or long relief guy. Remember, I said 1-2 guys would be 5/6 starter types. That means starter depth and maybe even starting in AAA.
  11. Michael Taylor signed with the Royals. If we want to go dirt cheap in CF and use most of our budget on pitching, I think Marisnik may be that guy.
  12. I agree, taking back McCutchen is not a good idea. I thought he was a better defender than he currently is.
  13. I was never really keen on this idea, but maybe the time has come. We'd need even one more SP'er than we already need, which means going from needing 2-3 to needing 3-4, including one to two 5/6 starter types.
  14. My point was always about GS'd NOT IP. I never even thought of the "opener role." If they started him out in that role, he could easily get 12-14 "starts".
  15. Famous denials followed by trades are not uncommon. Trade values accepted this deal: Duran, Chavis & Groome for Wheeler, Kingery, Eflin, Romero & $3M.
  16. No, I'd expect Philly to kick in enough money to keep us under the tax line by enough to add a RP'er or two. If they are willing to kick in money for Wheeler, they most certainly would be for A.M. The trade values site has Wheeler + McCutchen as a net -8. In theory, we could ask them to add 2 RP'ers to bring the value to zero and give up nothing for the 4 of them. (I was thinking AM could play RF and Verdugo CF, but his D has dropped off a lot. You are right, it makes little sense to take AM.)
  17. I totally agree. We rested these guys, who needed it, and still only ended up with these IP'd: 174 Porcello 147 Sale 107 Price 68 Eovaldi Are the "Restgate" people really thinking, had we pitched these guys more early on, they'd have not gotten hurt and missed much of the season? One could easily argue the opposite: had Cora pampered these guys even more, maybe they'd have been healthier and ended up with more IP'd.
  18. I never said I wanted Sale to get 12-18 starts- only that it was the most we could expect. Getting to 12 or more would take a few things to happen: 1) I expect Sale is doing everything he can to follow protocol, so his recovery time will not be extended due to laziness or poor attitude. 2) The Sox are in the playoff hunt in July, or the season has been pushed back. 3) Sale is truly healthy and ready to start. 4) His starts have pitch counts. We can "not want" Sale to try hard, but I'm not sure anyone can stop him. I'm not expecting him to be reckless.
  19. The cost for getting Wheeler would go way down (perhaps to zero), if we took McCuthen, too. (Not saying I'd do it.)
  20. I have no issue with anyone saying 10 GS'd is the most realistic best case scenario, but I don't think 12 GS'd is beyond reason. 14 might be pushing it, but players do come back earlier than 17-18 months, and my guess is nobody can try harder than Sale to do so. I respect your position about Cora, and it makes a lot of sense. It's one reason I lowered my expectations on Sale for 2021.
  21. Someone gave what they thought was the "best case scenario" on Sale. It happens that a thread goes off on some tangents. I responded what I felt was "best case" withing the context of being "realistic." I felt 12-18, and now realize that 18 is unrealistic, unless the season is pushed back. 12 starts is not the same as saying we will repeat 2018. Nice try, though.
  22. I guess there were two separate rumor mills back then, apparently with no overlap.
  23. A real expert. I still think there's a chance Sale is pitching in July. Sure, I could be wrong, but we were talking best case scenarios.
  24. So the very best case scenario, which one could assume we are in a playoff hunt, is he can only get 10 starts. I agree my top end of 18 GS'd is too rosy, but I still think he may get 12-14 starts. If the start of the season is pushed back, and/or we make the playoffs, we could see 12-16.
  25. This is not "vagaries of memories;" it is a correct recollection of what the rumors were back then. It may be hard to prove the rumors were correct. I do not think there were any rumors of abuse. If I'm wrong, then my memories can be called vague.
